Hi Andy Thanks for answering my question! In relation to the becoming a Sensei question, I was more referring to asking about the procedure behind being given that title by a federation, or however it's done. I really appreciate what you said at the end, about being able to ask anything here, it's great to have somewhere for those more abstract or unorthodox questions!

afaik, there is no official sensei title. It just means teacher, and usually only people 6th Dan upwards are called like that - if at all.

Another great kendo rant. Thanks Andy. It just occurred to me that in regards to training in regards to dealing with the zombie apocalypse, well It seems to me that men will pretty much cover all your needs, perhaps with the addition of a tsuki taken up a few inches from usual target. Hey Andy, I broke 3 shinai at my last taikai... All the breaks occurred on the side panel on the spine side of the shinai. The breaks were the long and unrepairable sort. Do you know what causes these kind of breaks? Thanks!

"Japanese and english are not the same..." Words of Wisdom :) Japanese and english have the luxus of not needing to bother about the gender of articles. But for these who have to (french, german, italian, ...) I would like to know with gender have different part of your bogu? Is "do" or "kote" (...) male, female, neutral?

Hehe good point! French speaker here, and I can tell you that we use all these terms as masculine terms, so we say things like "Il a fait un beau men" (He did a nice men strike). Although we say "une technique" (feminine one waza), when performed is used with masculine "un kaeshi-do", ... Hope this helps!

I'm Italian and I refer to bogu and all its parts (and therefore strikes) as masculine. i also refer to shinai and bokuto as masculine, but I know some people who refer to those as feminine. I can see why, sword in Italian is feminine, "la spada", so some people transfer that femininity to shinai and bokuto.

Late answer, but what you do in German when using foreign nouns (or novel/made-up nouns) is that you naturally pick the gender of the closest existing German word. If it's a completely untranslatable thing, you might pick the gender of the closest super-category of objects. There can be different opinions on which replacement to choose, though, so different people may come to different conclusion, and a consensus is typically found organically over time. In German I would say Do, Kote, and Men are masculine. The reasoning would be that I'd translate all of them as "protectors" (hand protector, chest protector, head protector) and "protector" (Schützer) is masculine. There is a case to be made that "men" should be feminine because it's a mask and "mask" (Maske) is feminine, but I rarely hear people use that. If anything I think people more often than not think of it as as a helmet ("Helm", masculine). In some cases it can lead to (not serious) religious wars! There is still no consensus (and much debate) on whether Nutella should be feminine (because it ends on a feminine Italian suffix "-ella"), masculine (because it's a spread, "Aufstrich", which is masculine) or neuter (because it comes in a jar, "Glas", which is neuter)!

Is kendo really developed in germany? i am not sure i would agree. There are 4 kendo clubs in my whole state. And only one of them is specilized in kendo, the others do stuff like judo as well and only kendo once or twice a week. Theres 3. and 4. dan's who teach kendo around here but not that many people practice it in total i feel, certainly not in my area.

SH, gibt nur 4 kleine clubs hier. Ich glaube 6. & 7. dan gibt es garnicht, 5. auch eher unwahrscheinlich. Könnte mich natürlich irren, aber wäre mir neu. Weiter richtung südwesten vorallem ist da deutlich mehr kendo.
