now i finally have conformation that swords do indeed make this "swoosh" sound when you cut in the air!

I am pretty certain the timing of the last kata is what gave red the advantage. And I don't even have 1st kyu.

Tokyo style shinden dont take forward steps for shohatto?

looking at red and his left knee during the kiriotoshi (1:41 - 1:42). The kiriotoshi is made without a step forward, more like seitei mae.

Theoretically longer. It really depends on your arm length and you being able to perform the correct noto. I use a 2-5-5 sword and yoko noto is fine, even tate noto is possible if I exaggerate the sayabiki. So realistically the difference is 3-4 cm max. I can only speak for what I was taught. Shohatto is part of the shoden series and is based on Omori ryu. For shinden shoden, the enemy is further away (as opposed to chuden where the enemy is much closer). Thus the focus in shoden is to cover the distance. This differs in Jikiden slightly, but still they also take the extra step (moving while cutting, and not just setting the foot like in seitei mae). I am not too aware of the Tokyo style of shinden so I thought maybe that was to explain the difference in the video.

In most of shoden, it is taught that the opponent is further away (irrespective of how they are sitting), thus the need for closing the distance. It is taught to move twice with the left knee. You can take smaller/bigger steps, but the end of the line is that you have to move it twice.

how do you even judge iado tournament. like what?
@philswaim3922 ай бұрын
I dont quite get it myself. The only persons opinion that matters in your iaido is your grand master who defines what the art is during their time. Competitions like these at this level seem really empty. At this level in koryu the most growth you have is inside you not in your technique.

How silly - waving swords around - at nobody, in particular! Not much of a "martial art", if you don't have an opponent. And would any conflict be solved by moving this slowly. A lot of pomp and ceremony!
@shortminute Жыл бұрын
Would appear so, but … this is the ceremonial part. It’s not for battle. Seen as a way to “prune one’s soul”. I did this daily for 7 years. My souls needed it. I could do some more TBH. Take care.

Swords are pretty impractical in any modern conflict, iaido is more like yoga with a sword, and a competitive aspect used to discern proper technique. I like to think of it more as moving poetry.
