the writing of this song details the struggles of people in maintaining their faith. Kendrick tells a story, he starts by talking about his first encounters with God, he then develops a deep connection to his faith. He is struggling in his life and he sees religion as an avenue to heal, he even goes as far as "giving strangers testimonies" but as soon as he gained his faith, it was lost as he heard the news that one of his close friends had died. Kendrick tells us that his relationship with faith changed a lot thought his life, he found it hard to believe in anything when such terrible things are happening to him and the people around him. Towards the end of the song he is telling us about his current attitude toward faith, that he would "rather not live like there isn't a God Than die and find out there really is". Kendrick in this song walks through his life and his experience with faith, ultimately leading us to his current life where he is very aware of gods presence but is still trying to truly connect to god "And wonder why I ain't ever caught that feeling before, Maybe they know Him better, or I don't know no better" but he doesn’t let this deter him from his belief "But what I do know, is that He's real and He lives forever". Faith is not only the title of this song, but it is key to Kendrick as a person, he chose to release this song to help others with their struggles in the hope that they might find a glimpse of light in a sea of terror. This mindset can be seen in a tweet he posted in 2012 "Aye. To that person that's been feeling suicidal out there. I wrote a song called "FAITH". Go listen and reply back ASAP." Just as Kendrick rejected faith in his youth and was able to develop his beliefs throughout his life, he hopes that others will see that God will always be there, through all the struggles of life, though loss, violence, pain, and greed he never leaves.

Fun fact: When this record dropped, Lecrae, who at the time had more followers on Twitter than Kendrick, DM’s him asking what struggles he was having with his faith. Lecrae recognized God’s gift and sowed a helluva seed. This would become the genesis of a true friendship (before the fame) of two men that would each respond to their respective callings in life. Both would go on to build legacies that meet at the intersection of faith & culture. Brilliant God we serve.

I've came a long way with religion, and when I first heard this song I fell in love with it, but for some reason forgot about it. I remembered it not too long ago, but never listened to the last verse I think because I just wanted to hear the first part of the song? When I finally heard Kendrick's words on his last verse I was in shock. My whole entire body reacted, because God is testing your faith again. God bless you all.

Remmy Escobedo Some people don't believe in God because they don't think there's enough proof that a God exists. And if there is a God, which one should I believe in? Because there's too many religions, so which one am I to follow? This is what I'd like you to answer me. Because I don't think that you should follow a religion just because there are things that you can gain from. In my own honest opinion, why should I have faith in something that I have no proof exists? I'm not even saying that you're living the wrong lifestyle, it's your life you decide what you want to believe in and what religion you want to follow.
@Joey.9
@Joey.9 10 жыл бұрын
David Azzopardi That's exactly what faith is. Believing whether you can see it or not. It isn't something you see but something you can feel in your heart. That feeling you have of love for someone or love for a hobby you have. It's something that warms up your soul and brings happiness in your life. Really study the song Faith by Kendrick Lamar because it can put it in many perspectives. I wouldn't tell you to choose a particular religion simply because there are ideas from all religions that you can place into your world. I feel like whichever higher being any person chooses to believe in only wants one thing. It's not to worship it but, to worship life and to feel love. Its what's missing in this world. I hope this helps you out. Love and Enlightenment.
@davidazzopardi7011

Joey 9 Yeah I get what you're saying but that's exactly the reason why I don't believe in a God or any of that. There's always that doubt and I just can't live with that. All the praying and all of the other things that religious people do, and you still don't know who or what you're praying to and if the God you're praying to exists or not. Even I have the doubt sometimes and to be honest these days I've been doubting the existence of God too much. Thanks for trying to explain and for not being disrespectful bro.

This song samples Manahein Street Band Tired of Fighting which came out the previous year in this ep's timeline. I litterally was floored through this on just random, and knew exactly where I knew this was from. This Ep is my favorite early Kendrick project. The heart, and comeup is so inspiring. Anyone who doesn't know check out "Today". It's a bonus song that didn't make this project. Faith is one of the reasons this album excells. He just went in relentless.

It feels terrible when you believe (i really dont classify myself as a christian) and when you start denameing GOD to god, amost wanted to really punch my self right squaremin mh face for doing that but we have to know just like kendrick said he testing you "PLEASE DONT GIVE UP OR GIVE IN".

At the end he mentiones why he believes a god exists.. and it's just Palcal's Wager.. Kind of lame =\ It's an old argument. You ask what if I'm wrong, but.. what if you're wrong? You act as if there's only two options, your god or no god.. what if it's a different god or one we have never heard of before and you end up in that god's version of hell? you realise there have been thousands of religions through out time.. and that just in christianity alone there are over 41 thousand denominations or variants.. your odds are terrible. Assuming one of the religions was actually right of course.. which most likely isn't the case, you have started with an assumption based on no evidence and little reason to assume it's true. And if you're suggesting I should just believe in that one particular god for insurance to keep in my back pocket.. I think a god would be able to see what's up lol, kind of insulting to your god.. especially that particular god since he's depicted to know everything and be all good and all kinds of other contradicting stuff. If you argue "what do I have to lose by being a christian", for me, a lot.. depending on how I would interpret the bible or how strict I am of course. We can always half ass things and make it easy lol. Also pragmatism and faith don't go together like that. People don't just choose some random thing to follow and then they actually believe it is true deep inside, they need to actually believe it. I can't just start believing in a god, just like a believing christian would suck at switching over to being an actual believing Hindu. Pascal's Wager is just a bad argument. Also if you want to see a funny video answering this question, go on youtube and search: Eyedunno Richard Dawkins - "What if you're wrong?"

kris geising - I'm wondering how you differentiate between which words are your god's words and which are just man's words.. which camp does the bible fit in? (in your opinion). Maybe that's what you're calling your god's words... not sure. If you are.. then you certainly aren't following every word.. no one is.. kind of impossible. I'm also kind of stuck as to how your comment relates to pascal's wager.. might have to explain it to me some time if you feel like it.
@krisgeising7107
@krisgeising7107 8 жыл бұрын
Siberius Wolf that's a great question. I would say there's a huge difference between say a direct quote from God/Jesus and an Old Testament story. Obviously with the Bible it's not all just God saying "This is good. This is bad." The Bible is full of wisdom, history, etc. A relationship with God is what Jesus points toward in the New Testament...obviously we no longer sacrifice animals to cover our sin as the people did in the OT. A theory states that every word is validated as applicable truth but I struggle with that myself because I'm no scholar ;) that's where my faith comes in... to address the second part of your comment: my comment was aimed towards the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs of your original comment. I (personally) believe that my "salvation" is solely...pun intended ;)...attained by faith in God and His Son Jesus who died to save the world from hell, which the Bible sates. I'm not concerned with added doctrine men have offered long the way including different "variations" of "religion"...I have faith in the Word of God and what it says and spend less time speculating about this and that...this does not mean I chose not to attend a church and the man upstairs and I just have an understanding, though I don't think that lifestyle is inappropriate, I know some religious people see that as taboo. I attend church for the purpose of fellowship with other believers to encouraged and be encouraged, not because it makes me a good person who earns salvation. I'm not sure what you believe and you can share that with me or you can not. Whether you agree or disagree I appreciate you offering me the opportunity for me to expound....you made me do some self-examination and thought myself! Thought about many ways to escape. He took two of my biggest consequences away. If it wasn't for me being so self conscious I would have abated my faith many times. The pride of not wanting to be whispered about kept me there. But my faith kicked me out. I don't regret having it. But don't you regret losing it... Just two different kinds of pressure. You just another kind of diamond. Respect

In most of his songs you can see the struggle Kendrick has with God. This is what makes him real. We all, at a certain point, have a struggle with God. His emotions and lyrics he puts into his music is evidence than he is human just like us, unlike other rappers today that right about how they got it good. Seems like they forgot how they got there, through a struggle. That's what Kendrick is to me, a struggle.

Verse 1: Kendrick Lamar] I take a sip of Hennessy and then get pissy drunk I ain't a drinker, I'm a thinker, call it what you want But if you turn your back, know that you just missed your chance To witness the realest shit that's ever been told to man I found myself losing focus at a Sunday service Embarrassed so I start questioning God, "What is my purpose?" He said to live the way he did, that's all he want from me Spread the word and witness, he rose on the first Sunday I said alright, enthused that my Lord gave a listen I opened my Bible in search to be a better Christian And this from a person that never believed in religion But shit, my life is so fucked up, man; I can't help but give in I'm giving testimonies to strangers I never met Hopped on the pulpit and told them how I was truly blessed Felt like I'm free from all my sins when the service was over Walked out the church, then got a call that my homie was murdered Then lost my faith again What am I gonna do Gotta have faith Life is too much I'm just through Where is your faith? (Don't you give up dont you give in...) Faith All you need is the size of a mustard seed [Verse 2: Kendrick Lamar] Single black parent from Compton raising children of four That's four innocent bastards 'cause, papa, they don't know Her day consists of working back and forth with babysitters Can't find no one to watch her kids, so she pay her sister Her baby daddy ain't 'bout shit, that nigga ain't 'bout shit Spilt his daughter milk just to cop a new outfit She pray to God every night, hoping that he'll mature And maybe one day his kids something that he'll live for Baby wanna go back to school, but she need some help Because it's hard trying to pay the bills when you're by yourself She thought about credit card scams, 'til she heard a voice That said, "The Devil is a lie, make a better choice" And so it's back to McDonald's and every month dealing With those crazy ass people at the county building Looked to the heavens and asked Him to make a better way Then got a letter in the mail, lost her Section 8 Then lost her faith again [BJ The Chicago Kid:] What am I gonna do? Gotta have faith Life is too much I'm just through Where is your faith? (Don't you give up, don't you give in...) Faith All you need is the size of a mustard seed [Punch:] Kendrick, I appreciate the opportunity to vent my nigga This about how faith works, yeah, murk it I had dreams of holding a 9 milla to Ray's killa Ask him why as my eyes fill up Each day it gets more realer, orangutans bang like gorillas It's jungle when the niggas in zoo The rats lurking, vultures circling the serpents Cats lying through their teeth, my nigga didn't deserve it I flirted with the idea of caressing the steel To make karma come faster than she normally will It's ill to see my faith try and leave me It's so hard to get it, to get rid of it is easy I'm tryna reach Cloud 9, that's what my niggas 'bout But it never rain in California 'less them pistols out Until then, my feet planted on the ground Shadowboxing my conscience 'til my faith start responding And if I get no answer, just know I tried I should have never looked into his son's eyes Ray Charles voice [BJ The Chicago Kid:] What am I gonna do? Gotta have faith Life is too much I'm just through Where is your faith? (Don't you give up, don't you give in...) Faith All you need is the size of a mustard seed [Kendrick Lamar:] This for my people that stressing whenever times is hard Your mind's slipping, wondering, "Is there really a god?" Knowing you shouldn't think that way and tryna freeze your brain But whenever there's pain, that feeling forever remains We can't believe what we can't see and reality seems stronger than prayer 'Cause you tried to change your life, and now you live in a wheelchair And your son was born with cancer and he live in urgent care At the tender age of 12, and you feel that no one cares Searching for answers, that's human nature, you ain't in the wrong Just know when you feeling that way His Spirit's in the room I watched people I know pray and catch the Holy Ghost And wonder why I ain't ever caught that feeling before Maybe they know Him better, or I don't know no better But what I do know, is that He's real and He lives forever So the next time you feel like your world's about to end I hope you studied because He's testing your faith again I'd rather not live like there isn't a God Than die and find out there really is Think about it
