Most freestyles aren't off the dome. It takes skill to write this stuff, memorize it, and match it up with a surprise beat. He can freestyle off the top of his head, but it's not as deep or spectacularly awesome as his written stuff.

It's still a freestyle because the bars and the beats weren't meant to mix/mesh. The earliest freestyles were all written, off the dome stuff didn't get popular till the 90's, and even then most off the dome stuff is pre-written, just not released.
