i think that GNX being released out of no where essentially was on purpose to show that he really can drop something almost perfectly unannounced and still get a great review. we saw the light 9 on this one from Fantano, which only further proves my point. i think GNX wasn’t his top of the line go to work, but i’d say it’s up there with GKMC and TPAB. it was focused, driven, and almost perfectly written. he used new elements and perfect rhyming as well as in your face lines that i can only say as packing a punch. one word for this album; different. it is so different from TPAB or Mr Morale and the Big Steppers which are more conceptual albums, but conveys a message still. GNX is like a house party; it’s wild, fun, crazy, but also chill, lyrical, and dramatic at points. that’s my review, thank you fantano!

Talking about Reincarnated but not talking about the final verse being an allegory for Lucifer’s fall from heaven is unfortunate. The way he “rewrites” the devils story of fall from grace, contrasted to the black musicians of an analogous story, and in the conversation with God uses the names of Pride, Fear, Feel, and Real; songs from his catalogue that dive into similar or relevant subject matter. It’s brilliant.

It really feels like the bar is being raised in terms of how to craft a narrative through music without even doing a concept album. We all know how this is continuing a story while Kendrick is just popping off on a victory lap talking about perspective on the industry and culture. Cool to see. Side note for the GNX. It was a special edition of the Buick Grand National and was the last one ever produced. It was made in 1987 (the same year K Dot was born and supposedly the car his dad brought him home from the hospital in) and was the last car ever made in the very first GM car factory. During 1987 it was the fastest car production car made outside of Lamborghini and was actually faster than any Corvette made that year despite having -2 cylinders. It was also my dream car before this album dropped and permanently raised its price lol.

My personal favorite songs are reincarnated, heart pt.6, and gloria. imo he fully surpassed Nas/Scarface as the greatest story telling rapper ever based off of these 3 tracks and his previous works. HM: tv off and dodger blue. theyre the most straightforward songs you can just bop too. and I agree gnx is the weakest track but you cant help but like it. I personally think this is Kendrick's most accessible album thus far. Not in a bad way a la drake, but its filled with amazing bops, amazing deep cuts, straightforward yet clever songwriting, and a concise tracklist only three quarters of an hour. This was the album that made me a kendrick fan.

I could argue all of the rappers you mentioned have much better body of works when it comes to flow and emotion than GNX conveys. In other words, yes lyrically Kendrick usually is much more impressive, but if you're gonna have dumbed down lyrics it better be at least with a great flow and have other strengths. I haven't been into new rap for a long time, but listened to that track more than I have any other in the past five years. I have played through GNX three times already front-to-back. As someone whose plays on Spotify probably look like a bot, statistically, I just thought it was hilarious that Drake couldn't fathom Kendrick being so good that he's literally pulling new (old) folks back into rap.

He missed so many basic themes of the album and acted like the beef was tiresome to the rest of the world as if he's the authority to speak on it. He, like other Pitchfork writers, use the artists they like or don't like as a backdrop to discuss them rather than let the music speak for itself. Then again, they'll probably re-review the album in a decade like they've been doing to other albums to stay relevant anyway. Before they go bankrupt from their Conde Nast deal that is.

After getting the abysmal review from Pitchfork, it is so great to see another wonderful review from Anthony Fantano. Pitchfork giving this album a 6.6, barely talking about any highlights they had listening to the album, judging the album for not having smaller west coast producers, despite having a feature list filled with small west coast rappers, and calling Reincarnated unlistenable, was down right horrendous. I agree with everything fantano said here, and it was from a much more objective viewpoint than trash ass pitchfork, comparing this album to Damn was very apt. As i think this album is getting a lot of gas from its bangers, but these are the melodic records kendrick has ever put out and that can't go unsaid. The production is incredibly sticky and each song contrasts the next, and kendrick's pen is as sharp as ever here, and never gets lost in the weeds. He broke down the headier tracks Wacced up murals, reincarnated, heart pt. 6 and gloria really well, while also seeing how much the bangers really bang. You can tell how much of the album stuck on fantano with the singing of various lyrics, and you can tell his restraint on glazing the dude and questioning some of the themes to find a deeper meaning to it all. Off 2 listens i came up with a feeling of a 9, best rap album of the year, for an overall great year of rap. One thing i missed on both reviews however was going deeper into the production and how it represents both the bay and LA, and how this is new territory for kendrick, and how he handles it really well, being more sinister on the beat. Sounwave, jack antonoff and co really did amazing in the department. Did love the talk on dry vocal mixes tho. My current top 10 of the year unordered: GNX, Chromakopia, The New Sound, Brat, Charm, Why Lawd?, I lay down my life for you, loss of life, and Smile

9:45 Shawn Cee said on his review on the album that he thinks “Man at the Garden” is a phenomenal song when you realize how far he has come from his song “u” on “To Pimp A Butterfly.” When he did not see his self worth, was in deep severe depression, and didn’t understand why God was giving him all this money and opportunities.” He also said it makes him feel amazing like it’s the best song to put on if you are having a bad day and feeling bad about yourself. I agree. It’s my second favorite song after “Wacced Out Murals.” “Ignorant West Coast?” Lol! I’m assuming you mean that as in goofy/silly? Lol. 10:00 I agree that “DAMN” is my least favorite album of his, and that “GNX” is better, and it was a common belief. However, DAMN was Pop friendly and an easier listen for people who typically don’t like lyrical and/or conscious rap as much. So people who didn’t like DAMN as much liked GNX better, and people whose favorite Kendrick album is DAMN (or liked it a lot!) don’t think it’s better than DAMN. Joe Budden didn’t like TPAB, which was his most conscious and lyrical album, but he liked GNX, but disagrees that it’s better than DAMN. 24:00 “Overly Dedicated” is the only project of his (mixtape) that had a Heart song on it, “The Heart Pt. 2” I believe. DJ Hed said he made it about his friends at TDE and their Journey because Drake tried to make it seem like he wasn’t still cool with them. I loved this album! The most replay value since GKMC to me! I never was one to claim his music didn’t have replay value because that’s subjective. To me I loved MMTBS. “Mother I Sober” was the only song that was super “dark” yet they act like the whole album was stressful. But GNX I can play with no Skips, I have my favorites, and ones I like less than others, but I can listen to all of them.

Todd in the Shadows had a great point about the Kendrick/Drake beef being a line in the sand to clearly separating Hip-Hop from Pop. The modern zeitgeist seems to reflect the peoples rebellion against the mainstreams blendering of music, fashion, and politics into a mush of gray market-tested averages. There is no average listener, no average moviegoer, no average voter, no average anything. Everyone belongs into their own subcultures with their own values and own esthetics. The people are tired of being culturally homeless and politically atomized. Conformity is weakness, unity is strength, choose your path, find your people and stand together. Make allies with other groups while accepting their differences as equal and work together as a society instead of pretending that we are all the same and everything that is done to us is done by us. Know your enemies and take a stand, because if you don't believe in anything then you'll fall for anything.

I’m stunned. I don’t normally listen to hip-hop or albums. I listened to R&B, but mainly female vocalist or songs with female vocalist. When I listen to hip-hop it’s usually female artists and that started during the Covid shut down. Male hip-hop became too derogatory for me, because I originally listened withrappers delight etc. Then Will Smith and other young wrappers who were pretty PG. Having said all that, I tuned into Kendrick during the battle and learned that some rappers told stories and provided music with meaning. I had heard of him and heard a few bars of his songs in passing, but I never listened to a complete song until the battle (unless a full song was in the Black Panther movie). But I would give this album a 10 just because it was paced in a way that gave me stories, female artists, and a pace that intrigued me enough to listen to it multiple times. My favorites are: Reincarnation & Man in The Garden. I believe that those two tracks are excellent for affirmations and soul healing.
@ytancorbel1898Ай бұрын
Totally share your experience. I grew up with people listening to pac and biggie but as i got older i only saw hip-hop as music talking about money, fame and luxury. Looking forward to exploring his and other similar artists' catalogues in the upcoming months.

The point is, is that if people are going to question Kendrick's talent or his place in the house of hip-hop is not one of the greats, this album is a statement about how if you're still questioning his talent and ability, you're just wrong and he doesn't care about your opinion.

Everyone is gonna forgot this album. Kendrick, damn and good kid mad city is my 2024 most played albums on my recap

I love that he's pulling away from the conscious-rap scene. He's done the work and he's given us incredible records from that era. Now he's stepping into more fun/experimental music. I think this is an incredible step for Kendrick. 9.3/10 for me

hes always been mad experimental lol and hes never been a ‘conscious rapper’ either

I'm hearing the comments, the critics are calling me conscious. But truthfully, only calling me Kweli and Common... proves... that Ignorance Is Bliss

I fully agree with your score but damn it feels like we listened to two different albums entirely lmao

He listened to it on stream like three times a few days ago and loved it, said it was his best work since TPAB- so not sure why you thought this

Fantano is a Kdot stan, he learned from his Damn review that everything he does is purposeful. Hard to imagine him not liking it lowkey, based on how good the production was and how unique for Kenny (and rap in general rn) the vibes were

@@elstovon i had no clue he loved it on his stream, i saw the reaction was uploaded but didn't watch it i personally quite enjoyed it, but thought mr. fantano wouldn't due to the project's apparent lack of overall cohesion (considering how the kendrick projects fantano has loved the most are the ones with bigger and clearer concepts)

@@elstovonMaybe he didn’t listen to the stream? Because before watching that stream, I had the same exact thoughts.

The confidence of Kendrick to not include "Not Like Us" or any of the diss tracks on the project.

Those were diss tracks, they dont need to be on here in the first place.. it was a good call

Question, do you write? Because the way you capture the critiques is very resourceful and these takes could be super impactful in text.
