The Boy how was views in anyway a concept album? It was a collection of random, half arsed tracks that had no storyline linking them together at all IMO.

WM_ 96 Kendrick might of been a part of that but I think it’s an era thing and not him. Hip hop evolves like any genre and with that the content becomes more complex and conceptual. Gambino was going to make BTI regardless of Kendrick or not. They came out around the same time too.

Man looking back at this video, it just makes me think that this was the last breath of the new school of Hip Hop that’s was actually good. Everyone that K. Dot mentioned in that verse from KRIT to Cole to Tyler and A$AP was the last of the dying breed of Hip Hop originality and people that can actually rap.

The brilliance of putting this on a track called "Control" ; Kendrick is experimenting with social control. He's saying some shit that'll stir the pot and seeing what will happen. Kendrick blew up all social media and popular culture related to Hip Hop. Kendrick got Hip Hop off of the girls, money and clothes bandwagon. The more competitive Hip Hop Great Awakening began (IMHO) on Yeezus when Kanye began to break down normal rap barriers, although he did it with bad lyrics and too much auto tune. K-Dot finished getting the ball rolling (fuck molly, fancy clothes, etc.). I've got a bad feeling about Eminem's MMLP2, but if I'm wrong, Em will finidh putting rap in it's place.

Very dope discussion. This mirrors the dialogue between friends and hip hop fans all over the world. I agree with all your perspectives. What really irks me about the general responses to the track are ppl who are saying Kendrick dissed. Thats so telling of what wrong with hip hip fans nowadays. Theyre either not listening or they cant comprehend complex or simple bars. That kills me. But overall, dope song, dope responses and discussion

Rapping is not just making words rhyme. Hip hop is a culture and an art form. MC Kendrick brilliantly used this verse to try to spark some inspiration into rappers that have gotten too comfortable in feeding their sheep the same thing day in and day out.

Joell Ortiz response is the best so far. I applaud Kendrick for making mainstream hip-hop interesting again.

I also commend K. Dot because out of everyone name he dropped in the verse, I can't see no one else taking such leap amongst his peers(Drake, Wale, Meek, Big Sean, etc), Jay Z and Eminem I know for a fact could have done this but they're both in their 40's and I digress!
