This is just such a wonderful tutorial! My career began as a trompe-l'œil airbrush illustrator, but I really hated it - especially when clients would make changes or challenged the realistic drawing saying, "we want it to look real, but not totally real." ugh. You've got such a masterful perception of your subject and I just love the way you go into it with confidence and expertise. I'm sure it may be intimidating to some viewers, but it's so important to see someone's work who does it right and does it so well. Congratulations on your work, and I hope you're having a great time being a parent, as well. We have 4 teens, so trust me, it's a full-time job, in itself! LOL! Stay well! :)

Thank you so much! I definitely feel your pain with the "real but not too real" client feedback. It's like, why would you hire me then? 🙄 Being a parent is a big job for sure. More to balance than there used to be, but lots of fun. I can't imagine life with 4!😅

I really enjoyed this video! You always get around to questions that aren't cliche and very helpful. Also, in the beginning you mentioned that people enjoy it when there's talking over the time-lapse. It is really popular nowadays but there are still people like me around who really enjoy a relaxing piece of music and just fully enjoying the artistic process.

Thank you so much, Elisa! I'm with you. It can be so nice to just watch a piece unfold across a few minutes along with a piece of music. It always feels a bit more magical to me that way too because it takes place in a shorter span of time. Glad you liked the video! 😊

Thank you for being so generous and sharing advice. I'm new to illustration and I've been e-mailing potential clients but mostly I try to reach out to bakeries or magazines. I'd like to expand my job search but I'm not sure what jobs to go for as a food illustrator. Without naming specific companies, what types of work would a recommend a newbie to look out for?

Great question, Brandi! I'll try to make a video about this soon. Overall it sounds like you're doing all the right things in the meantime! Just keep making work, putting it out there, and reaching out to people you'd like to work with. I'd say spend 9.5 out of 10 hours actually making the work though. Don't get caught up in cold emailing as it can be a big time suck and may not generate much work. The best thing you can do is to make lots of good work and put it out there on instagram and on a nice looking portfolio site with clear contact info and easy-to-understand navigation.

Thank you for this video and all these useful information. It always amazes me how nice and generous you are. About the CMYK vs RBG question, I'd like to add this: roughly RGB is for on-screen images and web, while CMYK is for print. So the choice depends on the final product type. You can easily find online free image editing softwares that can do the conversion job, just Look for RGB to CMYK online tools. I hope it helps. ;-)

Your art leaves me speechless! Thanks so much for sharing your work and knowledge. Are there any specific techniques you use to see all those colors in your reference? Every time I try to paint from reference, I only see the one main hue and its tints and shadows. Also, shadows always look plain gray or brown to me. :(

Very good video and a lovely piece of work produced. Would you do a future video on drawing shadows, as many occasions I have gone to heavy and ruined my work. What do you use to make the shadows around the objects you paint so subtle.

It's so sad to know about brazilian people copying others works. I work with patterns and I have seen a lot of brazilian brands (fashion brands specially) copying illustrations and complete seamless patterns everyday. They don't care, or worry about... just remove watermark sell. So I'm always afraid to put my stuffs online because of them. I don't want to this for me (or someone else). And its curious cause we have so many great artists but the brands here apparently prefer dont pay for a piece or an illustrator service. Really sad. This video is sooo peacefull to watch

Really enjoyed the video! What sort of edit work do you do the most in Affinity compared to Pixelmator?
@KendyllHillegas
@KendyllHillegas 6 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear it! I've been using Affinity for putting together patterns and compilations -- any time there are multiple elements to move around. Pixelmator makes you click "ok" every time you rotate or resize an object which can be a real pain if you're doing lots of rotating and resizing.

That really sucks about the theft. I've been lucky my Fine Art America and Pixels pieces I haven't seen on anybody else's site knock wood.

If you set up an account on Newgrounds.com they copywrite what you post and I think most artists don’t realize that they can fight back. There are laws against that kind of theft and you can definitely sue the person who steals your stuff. Art falls under the same copywrite laws as books magazine articles etc. I would love to see more artists take action on this because i think it would really curb people from taking whatever they please and selling it.

It would be good to consider registering copyright with the library of congress. You'll definitely be protected! Also, important to note whether one is an llc entity or not to be careful reporting earned income to Uncle Sam and avoid the tax man getting you!
@KendyllHillegas
@KendyllHillegas 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that can help for sure! Unfortunately you still have to chase people down with a DMCA notice. You can threaten them with a bigger stick if they've infringed on a registered work, which is good I suppose. Sadly it does nothing to help with sites that are hosted in China. But yes, definitely a good thing to do overall!
