Timeline - World History Documentaries

3 жыл бұрын

The town of Kenfig, built around a natural harbour 800 years ago, appears to have been a thriving commercial success but then it vanished, leaving just a few castle walls to mark its existence. Amazingly, the ruins of the town may still lie buried under the sand dunes that have covered the whole site since. Tony and the team look at the history of the town, how it disappeared and how the Welsh fought Anglo-Saxon settlers.

The banter between Phil and Ian ( the JCB operator) is priceless. Ian has noticed many features that the diggers had not seen. The combination of a brilliant swing shovel operator with an acute observational skillset was underrated addition to Time Teams success.

"Steel is a much purer form of iron" What? No it isn't, it's an alloy of iron and carbon. If anything steel is less pure
@RubenKelevra
@RubenKelevra 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I think what they meant is that previously high carbon steel was readily available, and with rediscovered furnace techniques they are now able to do low carbon steel of consistent quality - like they're used to around 2000 years ago already. So when you compare cast iron to steel, steel is much more pure than cast iron.
@TorvusVae

@@angrypug9841 Everyone involved in the series have regular archaeological careers, Phil teaches and leads digs for Wessex Archaeology, even today in his 70s. Mick was working with Bristol Uni. for most of the shows run, after he left Bristol he was still active in a lot of archaeological digs and studies till the day he died. Carenza worked for various universities and archaeological societies and trusts over the course of her time on the show. You will find similar stories for all of the people involved with the show. They could only spare the time for a few days of exploratory excavations. On top of that there is also the funding for the show, the production company simply can not afford the costs to have more than an exploratory excavation of a few days to see what is there, several of the sites on time team did get full excavations later.

At 6:45 a gross error of fact. "Steel is a much purer form of iron". NO IT IS NOT. Iron is the element. That is where "purity" comes from in steel making. Steel is an alloy of iron, always containing some carbon and other metals depending on what the steel is wanted for. The simplest steels are iron (Fe) alloyed with carbon (C) (about 0.1% to 1%, depending on type). Additional elements are what give the steel its strength and ability to take a lasting "edge". GET IT RIGHT, CHAPS! For a simple look, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alloy_steel

1. I am confused, Why are they using the name Time Team? Is this a new episode or something newly fabricated to mimic Time Team? 2. Why do they let the idea that steel is a more purified iron continue????? The different forms of steel, are all due to increasing the amount of carbon, to iron. Up to 1%., Not sure how more "cooking" will change it from iron to steel.
