He accused his teenaged bride of cuckolding him, while Shakespeare married an older woman at 18 because he'd gotten her pregnant. De Vere died before Shakespeare, so where did the layer plays come from? Beyond the grave?

DeVere’s father died when he was quite young, forcing him to be brought up by Cecil as a ward of the Crown. When he gained his maturity at 21 he was already in massive debt to pay off his wardship... but he was also given a 1000 pound annual annuity by the Queen, which was a massive sum (equivalent to about $1 million annually), so he didn’t really have money problems

Except that he did. His sponsorship of writers at Fishers Folley ended when he ran out of money. He had to sell properties as that ended. Not until his second wife fixed his finances that he was ever stable.

The annuity of 1000 pounds annual (about $300,000 in 2022 dollars) was not granted until 1586 two years before the Spanish Armada. Edward was 36 years old. Was he hired to write propaganda for the regime? Perhaps. The plays of Shakespeare definitely favor the Lancastrians in the War of the Roses. It’s easy to remember because of how Shakespeare portrayed Richard III, the last York King.

Neat! That means you're related to a friend and former boyfriend of mine. I don't remember the specifics with any certainty at this point, but his de Vere branch emigrated to Canada when the Roundheads took over. The main branch stuck around and saw William II get the crown back, but the estates and title eventually went with a daughter who married into the Lindsey family. Of course, you have to make sure the ancestry site you use is giving you accurate information and isn't the equivalent of the "look up your family's coat of arms" people, but it's entirely possible that you really are descended from the de Veres. Nobility immigrated to America, both when we were colonies (usually younger sons and lesser nobility keeping an eye on their investments, though some came here after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes) and during later political upsets like during the French Revolution and the English Civil War. Like the British, most of us have mixed ancestry, and it's easier to trace your noble ancestors back beyond a couple generations than your peasant ones, because the royals and nobles had more thorough genealogical records. And the further you go back in history, the greater the chances that you'll find a person you're descended from, whether you know it or not, because there have been more generations of their descendants marrying and/or having a bit on the side. I'm not sure if I believe it, but I've read that there's a high probability that most people of European descent are descended from Charlemagne, either legitimately, illegitimately, or both.

Some of the dig sites are on private land and I think the owners will be more willing to give consent to a 3-day dig rather than a week or more. Also they have a budget for each episode - more days of digging/filming, the higher the cost

According to his cousin Percival Golding as mentioned in Wikipedia, "On 18 June 1604, Oxford granted the custody of the Forest of Essex to his son-in-law Lord Norris and his cousin, Sir Francis Vere.[171] He died six days later, of unknown causes, at King's Place, Hackney, and was buried on 6 July in the parish church of St. Augustine.[172] In spite of his bouts of ill health, he left no will.[173] Elizabeth's will requested that she be buried with her husband at Hackney.[174] Although this document and the parish registers confirm Oxford's burial there, his cousin Percival Golding later claimed that his body was interred at Westminster.[175]"

I think it is impossible to find the remains of Edward de Vere in the ruins of his manor since, according to Graves Memorial Records, he is buried at St. John-at- Hackney Churchyard in Hackney

@Scumfuck McDoucheface towards the end of the show the ratings started slipping, essentially losing half it's viewership each season during the final four seasons. This caused some of the production staff, who had been largely hands off through the 'boom' phase of the early years, to start acting unilateraly to 'save' the show. So he's talking about Mick not being happy about Tony and the production staff's desire to start shifting focus away from the digs, finds and archeology/archeologists and more onto the 'side tasks' between the younger, ready-made presenters Mary and Alex, interviews with the land-owners, and their growing reliance on featuring 3-d models into every episode. Though he wasn't a producer (i.e. the $$), Mick was essentially the driving force behind the show's creation and style. It was Mick who convinced Tony that the show could work. So Mick got pretty miffed when, after 9 years, the production staff just started making 'radical' style changes to the show, without even consulting him (he was the archaeological consultant, meaning he chose the sites, the focus within those sites, the specialists, team members, etc. i.e. Mick heavily influenced the show), and he eventually left the show because of it. They filmed one season without Mick and following the new format, and the show was cancelled.

@@maxdecphoenix This was such an informative show. Mick was THE MAN! They shouldn’t have messed with Micks creation. History buffs mostly don’t wanna watch eye candy doing crafts.

@@r.c.miller6161 yes and no. Mick was right, under the first couple years, the show he envisioned worked. But then it stopped attracting the new viewers and couldn't retain the core audience. After almost a decade of control, Mick didn't want to change ANYTHING. To a t.v. producer, that is insanity. No one wants to pay money to put a show on t.v. they know they're going to lose money on. And they had a point, many marriages don't even last 10 years without getting stale, much less a t.v. show. So they just started making the changes they wanted. The issue was the changes they tried didn't enhance the core feature of the show, the digs and diggers. I think the show had run it's course, and no one wanted to accept that and just bow out on a high note. And so it ended with hurt feels and a bad taste.

I wonder how the owner recognized the tombs on exhibition as once parts of his dining room

Because of the photos taken while the tombs were still part of the dining room. The clue was in the three steps in the dining room which were visible in the photograph and still in the dining room after the tombs were removed. That was explained in the video and the photos shown. That room where the tombs were was probably not intended to be used as a dining room when the tombs were placed there.
