A little backstory on this shanty; the "her" in this song is not a woman. It's the ship. This was traditionally the last shanty sung on a voyage after the ship had already moored in port and the crew were doing their last rounds on the bilge pumps preparing to disembark.

@@Megidramon maybe it’s a bit late for your question but asl and bsl are completely different languages, like the difference from French to Chinese. They were developed completely separate of each other. Asl also uses one hand while bsl uses two hands for signing

ANother reason of why i'd say, right now, sea shanties are so popular, is because of the hard time we're going through. Sea shanties are "work songs" that were sung by hard working men, during time of miseries sometime too, to keep the moral up. The fact that these songs are accessible for everybody to sing, just create this feeling of union, of being connected with the other singers or participants. People need to assemble right now, need to feel connected to their fellow human relatives as a lot of us are stuck home. I think it might be one of the reason it is so popular right now. (Sorry for my bad english, it ain't my first language)

That explanation is pretty perfect yeah. We all feel the struggle of the last year from being stuck in one spot for what feels like an eternity. These songs speak to a rough time where a joyous time can be ahead when you get your pay and are finally on shore again. This, along with A Health to the Company make a ton of sense being popular right now

I think part of the popularity of these sea shanties/working songs is partly they were sung during hard times for comraddery and support. They sung of better times coming as we trudged through the bad, and with times what they are the communal chants and positive aspect of the songs are inviting.

I like your idea behind the resurgence of sea shanties. I have a slightly different idea of why it is, and it comes from experience being out to sea for long periods of time. While on the ship you are, despite being with however many other people are in your crew, very isolated. The feeling of being on a ship at sea is similar to feeling of having to be away from friends and family for long periods of time in the current Covid-centric world. The simple melody, the call and response type of song also really adds to the feel of community and togetherness. Sea shanties, and working songs, have always been used to bring people together for a common goal. So building that in to this world where we are so isolated and where there isn't an end in sight, whether of the quarantine or of the time on the ship.

I've loved sea shanties ever since I sang some as part of a high school acapella group. I'm 44 now. I think the appeal is because they're accessible. You don't have to have a grand operatic singing voice to take part, just a desire to sing and be able to follow along to a simple tune. I think the resurgence right now is because of Covid lockdowns happening all over the world. So many people with not a lot to do, no socialising, commuting, activities etc. which means they have had to turn to something else to fill the time. Not a lot of the population have access to musical instruments either, so something that does well with no accompaniment is perfect... which is exactly what sea shanties were designed for. I think also the mental health aspect of taking part in a project that works with other people in this way (and yet, still stays socially distant) provides a mental boost.

Hello, have you heard about Annapantsu or adriasaurus? Anna has made a lot of covers for musicals, games, cartoons etc. and has a gorgeous voice. I have a Clam Chowder recording from around 1980 that features this tune, in eclectic album that runs the gamut from "Have Some Madeira, M'dear" to "Wallops Island". And I agree with you completely about the compelling simple harmonies -- all those tonics and dominants and open fourths and fifths. Overtones are musical endorphins.

I've loved shanties ever since I first came into contact with them. Imo, this type of song became so popular expecially during the quarantine, because it gave people the feeling to be doing something together, although they didn't come together physically. We all have struggled with isolation to varying degrees, I think, and to be able to finally do something together with others, even though not in person, is something that helped many people through this time.

My theory on why people love sea shanties, and especially why they took off so hard and so fast in 2020, is because sea shanties were sung by the sailors to ward off the loneliness that comes with being a sailor and to show the comradery that they all have with each other. 2020 was a very hard, dangerous year for everyone, so sea shanties, just like in the days of the original shanties, were a way to show that even though we all have it hard, nobody is alone in these trying times. I think subconsciously, we all needed sea shanties in our lives

I first heard shanties when my uncle rhymes bit by bit when i was a child, i didn't knew their origin and when i lost my uncle it fades till i encounter them again 8 years ago in a game. AC/Blackflag you play a pirate captain and that's when magic happens. Sailing vast blue, with your trustworthy ship and digital crew, sang sea shanties you collect all over the world honestly hooked me up and teared me down. Still one of the finest memories i had in games, sheer amount of surprise and emotion when i heard shanties that heard from my uncle was priceless.

I believe the love affair with the shanties, is the histories, cameraderie, the bravery, and fear... you are your own country with countrymen on the unknown and perilous voyage, and who knows, who knows, time to go down to ol' Maui. But on that ship, livelihood and you are a floating bunch of neighbours. And quite honestly, the chants, help hoist the sails, get the work done, like in the fields of water fore'er before you. Work together or die, fight together die together, bones in the ocean is one of my faves..... also there is an opportunity to sing about what you miss, what you dream, what life can be, and what losing that means. Like Odysseus hearing the songs of the sirens, the siren call is within us all. And damn right, song and music is our souls crying and laughing trying, succeeding, and sometimes failure, but learning all the way boy. ALL THE WAY BOY!

A Family doing Lord of the Rings Covers and original songs. Their biblical songs are also very nice to listen to. I couldnt decided which Song to recommend though ;) Maybe lament for Boromir . Well I love them because I'm half Irish but I think it's because it's such a group song that everyone can join in and makes everyone feel good giving the feeling of brotherhood with your mates. The love of sea shanties comes from the hardtimes of late. I think collectively as a society it just harkens back to the tough times of old. Been a brutal 2 years since COVID became and sea shaties leave us a small inkling of hope as well give us a little drop of steadfastness.

In my opinion and why I could listen to shanty's all day....I'm just a fan of history and very much so the Privateer era and these songs tell stories, while being created at the time as a way to pass the long hours or make the work go faster. Imagine being out in the middle of the ocean for months and the winds have not blown for days. I can imagine cabin fever being a real thing, so this being a way to quell that, maybe. You don't get many today that carry on this sort of storytelling. Like an oral tradition. Sometimes music is best made without the instruments, but it would be interesting to hear a hurdy gurdy played along with this.
