This is a great video and an excellent demonstration of all the features on this machine! My family and I have owned and used this Kenmore for 4 years now. It does a wonderful job on carpets, and the reset feature you demonstrated is a big plus when you accidentally pick up the edge of a rug or sheet. A nice addition to your fine collection!

I put this exact vacuum together for a friend and it took ,me about an hour. It's a nice vacuum, she got it at Sears for 75% off, which is a great deal. Kennmores nowdays are cheap and I think that this was a model that was being discontinued at the time. My grandma also has one similar to this called the Panasonic QuickDraw

I have the new elite, and it also has the direct drive and the "optiflo" kenmore design. on the elite I feel the brush spins a little slower than a belt driven model, similar to my intuition. But it's more agressive and "torquey" I guess? And panasonic won't be making vacuums here next year apparently. :(

@supbullet The purple one started out with an air turbine tool and a few years later, they offered an upgraded model with a better electric hose (much like a canister hose, not as flexible as a stretch hose, but wouldn't snap tight either) and an electric powermate junior. So, you remember correctly :o)

I have the exact same model and my brush roll stopped rolling. I have taken all the screws off the bottom of the vacuum but cannot get the bottom off to try and replace the brush roll. How do you do that?

I've never had to do that... I saw a video on here a few years ago, where the guy had the same problem and it seemed that one of the computer chips inside it went bad or something... he had the yellow version, but it was the same vacuum and he showed how to take it out, but I can't remember what he did and can't find the video again... did you press the little red reset button on the top by the height adjustment slider just to see if it needed to be reset? That would be the best case scenario... if not, I've seen several of these on Craig's List for sale since I bought mine as people "upgrade" to Dysons or bagless... they aren't too expensive, and it is a good enough vacuum to warrant replacing with the same thing if you can do it cheaply enough...

Just bought a Sears Kenmore Elite Upright # 31150...and JUST returned 6 days later. A Consumer Report top rated vacuum indeed. Reg. price $270 got on sale for $269.99. I chose the bagged type cause I didn't want dust clinging to every part of the vacuum. One day wife was vacuuming and a noise appeared...sounded like something hard was rolling around the rollers like a paper clip or somethnig. No problem, just pull the rollers out and remove the rattling obstruction. NOT POSSIBLE TO REMOVE THE ROLLERS. It's a direct drive machine with no belt so there's no reason to remove the rollers. HUH. There's no way to repair it yourself, always at the mercy of an expensive technician. My old vacuum was a Hoover upright, with the belt that had to be changed every now and then. I owned it for 22 years with no service repair. That's the best type. At least then you had the opportunity to remove the rollers. Oh, then what caused my noise in the rollers? Probably the plastic direct drive gears. There was nothing she picked up off the floor that made that noise. It was an engineering flaw if you ask me. So disappointed.
