I am going to purchase the same machine from a coworker. I'm very excited about it. It was his wife's grandmother's and they've had her for 49 years in their house and never used it and the grandmother probably bought it brand new I told him I don't know what year it is. I haven't looked it up on the list But your video is what sold me on actually purchasing it on the quality the light works. The motor turns on he's not sure if it works. He's never used in 49 years so obviously I've got a oil it. Hopefully the original manual will be with it but I worked on a few different vintage machines cell I'm not afraid to get it all in good working condition.

Sounds like a great opportunity at restoring a great machine. While it has not been used in a very long time, if it has been stored indoors, there is no reason why it can't be 'awakened' from its slumber.

Hi. I would like to post a video like this the next time I have one in my inventory that I am restoring. In the meantime, you might want to find (if you don't already have one) a manual for your machine which can help. Note they are available online in PDF or hard copy formats so its ok if you lost the original manual. These machines are very strong. Some of their features are different from most machines and Singers and the manual will help you in learning more about the machines operation.

Hello I have one of these machines and it is very very noisy in teh area of teh wheel and pulley. Do you have any tips?
@VintageSewingMachineGarage Жыл бұрын
Hard to know exactly. I would start by checking to see that your friction pulley (the little rubber tire/wheel that drives the hand wheel) does not have a 'bald spot' or flat spot. This can happen when these models sit for long periods. There are new replacements for these if you find that yours has the bald dimple spot. See also my videos on how to lubricate the motor bearings as they can make noise when dry. FYI, these machines make a different sound than most as they were designed to use the White manufactured motor which was made for decades.

Idk if you remember, but when sewing leather on this machine, can a longer stitch be selected than the one seen? I find the issue with these vintage home use machines, or any home use type machine, is though they can sew through the thicker materials, the stitch length gets almost too short to be pleasing like with leather.
@VintageSewingMachineGarage4 жыл бұрын
The average machines from this period had shorter maximum stitch lengths than more modern machines. Some of the vintage models have surprisingly longer stitches. As you move into the '50s and '60s, the stitches got longer. So, it really varies, but yes, if you are sewing leather with a vintage model, you really want to test some leather samples on the machine before you buy to ensure the stitch is long enough given the need for greater length when sewing leather (or vinyl for that matter). You could say that SOME vintage models make great light weight leather stitchers and some not so much.

Hi Shelie. Not sure if you are in an urban area such as Portland or out in the hinterlands, but there are lots of local repair groups listed on Facebook Groups and there may also be "Right to Repair" groups that have real time meetups. Hello Miss Tina! Because these machines are so popular you can actually download the manuals for them online. It goes all the way into maintenance and repairs. If you haven't already, I would recommend downloading one of these manuals because they are pretty good. I also have just purchase one of these machines and restored it and what I can see is that you adjust the foot pressure by tightening the bolt directly above where the foot Is on the top of the machine. As you tighten it down it puts more pressure on a spring. That spring pushes down on the rod connected to the foot. You should be able to hand tighten it far tighter than you probably would want.

hi. I have a couple questions about this machine. how much would a unrestored one go for? restored? I found the exact machine at a antique/thrift store and bought it for 8$! it runs and seems to be all there. it came with the original wood carry case too. I work at a place called HRP products our of Farmington NH and they do custom fabrication,make motocross chest protectors,jerseys and some sports items. I want to learn how to sew so I can get more money at work. right now I'm just doing production work and die cutting. I was also wondering...will thus machine repair leather couch cushions? I want to fix my couch cushions and there is sum regular fabric attached to the zipper, but the fabric is just too shredded and one of the stitchers at my job said they can't be repaired..I don't believe that. I think u can fix anything if u put your mind to it..and wallet..lol..I just want to cut the old fabric out and replace it. could I see to the leather with fabric? or is there a specific machine for leather? any information on this machine would be much appreciated. thanks
@VintageSewingMachineGarage8 жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew. I think its great that you enjoy repairing things. Yes, most things can be repaired. If the item is a zipper, it might be easier to replace it than to repair it, but a person with upholstery experience could inform you better on that question. As to sewing leather, yes, you can sew garment/wallet weight leather with this machine. However, although this machine has a lot of power, sewing on a cushion/pillow can be difficult due to the low clearance that this (and most domestic) machines have under the Presser Foot. You have to be able to fit material under the foot area in order for the machine to handle it. I suspect that you may need an industrial machine to sew leather cushions. Nothing wrong with trying it on this machine, but my guess is that you will need more space to fit your cushion under in order to get it sewn. Industrial machines (the right one) are better for this. Thanks for writing.

Hi. Yes, you can get manuals online. You might have to purchase it as a PDF but they normally are priced between $5 and $10 and are so very useful. As for needles, you will be glad to hear that all or most all vintage home sewing machines take home sewing needles which are the same as those that new sewing machines use. They can sometimes be listed on the package as 15x1. The only thing that should vary will be the needle's "Sewing Type" such as Universal (the most common), Jeans (for heavy fabrics), Ball Point, (For knit fabrics) and Leather tips. But all of these tip types can be gotten in home sewing needles all of which should fit your old Kenmore. And as you noted, the most important thing is to insert the needle properly and thread properly. How great that you have one that has been in your family.

Also what size light bulb does it take? I couldn't find that answer in my manual and I think the one that's already in it is wrong because if you leave it on to long it will start to smoke a little.

Needles are standard home sewing needles from any sewing shop. For bobbins and sewing feet, you should look for vintage. They are not that hard to find. Be sure to search under words like "Kenmore Rotary bobbin" or Rotary sewing attachments. They might be under names like White, Dressmaster, Franklin. Yes, oil the machine with ONE DROP at each oiling spot before each sewing project. Unlike modern machines which require very little oil, vintage machines should have more frequency of oiling since they are all metal.

Hi Marc. These Rotary machines have plenty of power and make beautiful quality stitches, but they don't have quite the same clearance under the presser foot as the Singer 15's do. I would humbly suggest the Singer in this instance because clearance matters as much as motor power when sewing multiple layers of material.

Heyy I've got myself a Sear's and Roebuck branded 117-552. Having difficulties trying to figure out what needles it uses... Size wise and I want to stitch some leather with it. 6o total weight, 2 layers of 3oz
@notesfromleisa-land4 жыл бұрын
It uses the same needles as modern machines. Flat of shank goes to the right, and threads left to right. Use a leather needle with appropriate size for the thread that you are using.

Will any bobbins made for the 117 series fit my 117-552
@VintageSewingMachineGarage3 жыл бұрын
In all likely hood, yes John. There are primary differences in the bobbin cases that were used with White vs. Kenmore versions of these machines, but the bobbins themselves should be interchangeable.

Hi, I have a White model 431 Rotary sewing machine, it spent a couple of decades in a garage getting dirty. I cleaned it, oiled it, and changed out the electrical cords. I have found no info on how to clean the motor, a rotary pulley design. Do you have any advice on how to do this? Thank you, I appreciate your time and videos. - Marci V

I just got this exact model sewing machine, but it doesn’t have a bobbin case. Does anyone know where I can find a replacement?
@PitBullMommie7 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thanks so much for a great video! I have this exact model I inherited from my Grandmother (I'm 61 years old), and I LOVE this machine. However, does it do a zig-zag stitch? I have the manual, and on the very last page, it tells you how to troubleshoot if your zig zag stich isn't stitching right. But nowhere in the manual does it say HOW to do the zig zag stitch. Can you help? I can't find anymore help online! THANK YOU! Erla
@VintageSewingMachineGarage5 жыл бұрын
This machine did not have ZigZag stitching built into the machine. However, there would have been an optional ZigZag attachment as and accessroeis that would have worked similar to the Singer ZigZagger (Not compatible with the Kenmore). I don't find that ZigZagger attachments work on a practical level and I would prefer to have a spearate machine that has ZigZag capability and keep this Kenmore for its great rotary straigth stitch.

I have the same machine. But the issue is that the thread will not stay in the needle. is that the timing?
@VintageSewingMachineGarage8 жыл бұрын
Hi. Not necessarily. Timing on sewing machines can get out of tune, but that is somewhat rare. Check a few things such as the length of your thread tails and be sure and hold light tension when you begin to sew. If your needle thread is breaking, check your tension adjustment, needle size to thread ratio, and also be sure to go back and make sure your needle is installed properly in the right direction AND all the way up into the needle shaft. Vintage sewing machines do not break easily or often, but they do require setup of things like thread and needles/bobbin case to be properly set. FYI, the bobbin case on this machine threads differently than most and it only takes one wrong threading turn to throw off the machine. My guess and its only a guess is that your machine is not broken, but that one of your settings is off. It could also be caused by a thread remnant that is wound up or caught in something. Try starting over with needle change and re-threading the machine and you may discover the problem goes away. This is the first thing I check when troubleshooting. Good luck

How much does this sewing machine run on the market today w/ cabinet? thanks!
@VintageSewingMachineGarage5 жыл бұрын
Hello. The prices range pretty broadly. It's been several years since I had this one and I don't recall, but the avg. of most I have had is approx. $150. These are very undervalued IMHO. When in good condition, they are quite strong machines and create beautiful rotary stitches.

I have a 117.812. It is in mint condition...though I had to do some PB Blasting on the undercarriage gears after it seized after sewing for 10 minutes. I have two things to contribute to your wonderful series. Manual: I purchased a set of Greist Rotary Attachments that are made for this machine. With it came a manual (still in original sleeve!. You can download it here: app.box.com/s/9i8duq7cirpa7u15k1totzmfqwyammze This manual is for a 117.551 (1938) but will be applicable to other 'vintages' as well. My 1948 model has very minor differences from the manual, and looks identical to yours (though mine is brown). I scanned the manual using 600 dpi. It is the original size, but your pdf reader can make it larger. I hope this helps people feel more confident in buying/owning this machine. It shows clearly all of the needful things to include the vaseline for the oil cups in the motor take...vaseline per the manual. (it must have the right melt point for the engine lubrication). Also, with respect to different models etc, I found the following from the sears archive --a listing of all of the kenmores. app.box.com/s/t23nnmxrlrgsnc44vhnf7gwb8ps2ogkz Thank you for your videos on this unsung hero of a machine. They have been really helpful, and there is precious little about these machines.

Leisa - Thank you so much for sharing this! I just inherited my grandmother’s sewing machine, slightly different model, and only some of the manual was still intact. I’m a beginner and pretty intimidated anyway, so I’m so happy to find this! I’ve wanted to learn forever and since losing my grandmother and receiving this machine - one of her most cherished items - I am determined to learn on it. And when I opened the pdf and saw “please donate to an animal shelter” - oh my goodness! You are my kind of people. ❤ Will do. Thank you a million times! You just made my day.

Hi and thanks for your question. Standard home sewing needs will work find for this machine. You do need to follow the manual directions for installing the needle. See the manual that came with your machine for directions on this or I would suggest getting a PDF copy of the manual online.

Hi. Check on Ebay where reproductions are sold as Rubber pulley/Sewing Machine/Kenmore/White. If you use these key words, you should find a number of places selling them. They are very inexpensive.
@ajnoname28166 жыл бұрын
The little pulley you are talking about on the motor can be found on eBay or Amazon it only cost about 5 bucks and even though it says Kenmore this little Hub you were talking about that rubs on the big pulley wheel will fit it's a quarter inch shaft

I have that exact machine in the Kenmore Sheraton cabinet. It has all of the attachments of which I have no idea how to use.
@VintageSewingMachineGarage5 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph. Many attachments were offered or sold as extras back in the years of these machines because there were no computerized stitches or features. There are 3 possible ways I know of to learn the attachments. 1. See if you can find or have a user manual for the attachment. Many had their own manuals, though sometimes the sewing machine manual also had info for attachments as well. 2. Do a search for KZbin videos on the attachment or sewing machine model you have to see other people showing how they work. or 3. Join groups like those on Yahoo where you can find groups for many brands and eras of machines (such as White/Kenmore rotary) etc. Good luck with your Kenmore.

I just bought this machine and I cannot get the wheel to move, should I take it to a machine shop and let them do the once over it? Is it worth paying for?
@TheMinot606 жыл бұрын
Jennilyn B put oil everywhere metal moves against metal, except gears (those round things with teeth that turn against each other). Grease the gears with Vaseline. Wait 24 hours and try to turn or move what wouldn’t turn or move. More oil if needed. Hit it with a warm blow dryer. That will fix 90% of these machines problems.

Hi Gloria. There can be any number of causes for this. When you say that it is stuck, do you mean it will not turn or do you find it won't release off of the driveshaft in case you are trying to remove it for service/lubrication?

Hi Sidney. Yes, I had to look back and recall where I found replacement brushes for one of the Rotary machines I overhauled. This site is very useful for some hard to find parts. There is a page for "ROTARY PARTS". Scroll about 2/3 of the way down the page and you will see them listed as: Motor Brush Set. sewingmachine221sale.bizland.com/store/page44.html

Vintage Sewing Machine Garage do you know if any of the other machines share a like part
@VintageSewingMachineGarage5 жыл бұрын
Some of the Rotary machines made by White do share a number of parts. However some also vary. White brand and Kenmore brand versions typically have slight variations in their bobbin case design even though they use the same bobbins for example. If you can find brush caps for a White machine, as long as it has a similar motor design, they "MIGHT" work fine on a Kenmore Rotary. Again, try asking the seller of the part to see if they can confirm this. Other than Singer, the machine designs which had the least amount of change over the decades were these White Rotary designed models under the various brand names I have mentioned.
