I'm not a pilot either, I just love the way they talk, no nonsense, everything has a meaning and only one meaning, none of the "well I think it would be good probably to..." that I hear all the time. Straight talk only. Have a nice day and 123.9! Cya!

For non-pilots and those who don't understand some of the lingo, here's a quick reference: - GROUND = Kennedy Steve's job, GROUND is responsible for guiding planes from their terminal to their designated runway. GROUND has its own radio frequency so when he says "monitor xx.x", he's saying to switch to the TOWER'S frequency. - TOWER = The thing most people imagine when you think "ATC", they're responsible for guiding the plane from the runway into the air and from the air onto the runway. - HEAVY = A large plane that generates a lot of wake. - SUPER = An Airbus A-380. Very large and generates LOTS of wake. - HOLD/SHORT = Stop before crossing, like pretending there's an imaginary red light at that crossing. A plane told to Short at a place DOESN'T MOVE until Ground tells them to move - [Number] L/R (i.e 31L) = A runway. - BLOCKED = When multiple pilots talk at once on the same frequency, to the Tower/Ground, causing loud and unintelligible noises that nobody understands. -TAXI = Move the plane to a location on the tarmac without taking off. -ALPHA/BRAVO/KILO etcetera = A taxiway, a kind of plane road that takes planes from the terminal to the runway. Hope this helps!

Just a clarification "-TOWER= the actual ATC" as opposed to Ground is not a correct statement. Both ground and tower are actual ATC. Air Traffic Control according to ICAO-Annex 2 Air traffic control service. A service provided for the purpose of: a) preventing collisions: 1) between aircraft, and 2) on the manoeuvring area between aircraft and obstructions, and b) expediting and maintaining an orderly flow of air traffic. the Ground is doing all of the above. And in aerodromes with a complex lay out such as JFK the Ground controller is laying the foundation for expediting and maintaining an orderly flow of traffic so as to allow the Tower controller to focus on the separation between aircraft landing and taking off. Controllers have to take into account speed and climb capabilities, routes after take-off and scheduling times of departing aircraft in order to keep the system efficient, cost effective and environmentally friendly.

Each ramp has it's own frequency, so to do this, ground would have to monitor and switch between several frequencies. Also, ramp controllers are usually located in the terminal that their ramp is serving they can see both sides, both ends, so it's not like Steve can yell across the room to talk to a ramp controller.
@lohphat

You don't need constant radio communication, you need a point to point link with a PTT switch when you need to talk to them. Having to use an intermediary pilot to communicate who may have weak English conversational skills at an major international airport just seems to be the worst possible option.

The control tower and ramp tower talk to each other, usually over the telephone, when needed. Some airports also have systems (Aerobahn, NavCanada's EXCDS, etc.) that provide a data link between the ramp and the ground radar system. NavCanada's equipment is the best, but the FAA feels like they have to reinvent the wheel rather than buy a system that has been actively deployed and updated for over 20 years. Compared to the rest of the developed world, the equipment in our towers is pathetically out of date.

“Well, good news, I have more control than he does, you can stay there.” That was the best part of this. The ramp being inconvenienced means one plane coming to the gate might be inconvenienced...maybe. If ramp had authority over ground, the entire airport would be a huge cluster.

@kallewirsch2263
@kallewirsch2263 Жыл бұрын
@@Vinemaple Because JFK simply is just to big to get it all handled by just 1 person. Ramp deals with all issues of parking a plane, including assigning a gate where passengers may leave and enter the plane. At JFK you can't expect ground to monitor all parking stands and know by heart which plane is supposed to go at which gate. Especially if gate assignements have to change because of eg. some technical issues or delays. IN the rush hour, ground has to manage 30 to 40 planes at the same time and make sure all of them are guided to the runway or the ramp without blocking each other at the taxiway intersections. That's stressfull enough.
