Kennedy Steve's obviously damned good at his job. The thing that always kills me, though, is how quickly he can fire off a long string of instructions and the pilots manage to hear it all and then successfully read it back. Even if I were taking it down in shorthand I think I'd need him to say it four times to get it all, for some of this stuff. Pretty impressive.

The short ones like go right on brave hold short of Hotel Bravo are fine for me to follow. But the ones where he is, go left on brave, follow the Delta Airlines 737 to Foxtrot, turn right on foxtrot, double back on Alpha to Alpha- Alpha, cross 31L and holld short of the gate (for example) Are way too long for me still. I was getting worried that I Might not be pilot material after all.

So, I've been watching this with a laminated KJFK ground diagram in my lap, a grease pencil, and a bunch of colored grease pens. What Steve is doing is he has certain "lanes" that he's using. If your coming from term an X, you're going to use taxiway Y until he branches you off. What he's desperately trying to keep from happening is the ramp managing to back things up enough to block his main arteries around the airport.

It always amazes me how Kennedy Steve and the other controllers manage to keep sane with the maze of airplanes that they have to manage. How long at the time do they have to do this before they get a break? I would suspect a couple of hours might be the max time before they all have an information overload. Also, It must be pretty hard for someone to sit down in the controller's place for that break time. Thanks as always for bringing us Kennedy Steve. Do you ever monitor any of the other controllers and are they as efficient and humorous as K Steve? It might be interesting to put some of them up at times so we can make the comparison.
