Alongside the Rickey Minor Band, Erivo gives a passionate performance, bringing life and soul to Al Kooper’s words. NEXT at the Kennedy Center brings in the New Year with unforgettable performances by Cynthia Erivo, Ben Platt, and Joaquina Kalukango filled with love and hope.
Erivo has taken the world by storm since bursting onto the West End and Broadway stages in The Color Purple. An actress, singer, author, and producer, Erivo has received worldwide critical acclaim for her work, including Grammy®, Emmy®, and Tony® Awards.
Joining Erivo are her friends Tony®, Grammy®, and Emmy® Award winner Ben Platt and Tony®, Drama Desk® and Outer Critics Circle® Award winner Joaquina Kalukango. As a child in the 1970s I would sit in from of my dad's record collection amd look at the covers. Sometimes he would play them for me. As long as I kept quiet and just listened. Wow! I've never heard anyone do this cover of Donny Hathaway's song before. Donny is one of my personal all-time favorite male singers. As a matter of fact, he is the 1st singer that I listened to on the radio. I was blown away with his beautiful voice. Even today, his songs still touch my soul like no other. His voice was definitely anointed. Gone too soon.

One thing I will say about Cynthia, is that she really sings with her face too. That Broadway background truly shines through and really puts emotion behind all the words she sings. She really gives a PERFORMANCE, despite her sometimes lacking vocals. Love that you can bet on the fact that she will always bring the drama.
