Not only are you a great instructor and player but it looks like you have great upper body strength. I was told that good upper body strength is very important and that the best players have this. Thank you for your channel Joel. 🙂

I was one of the straight thumb and pinky violists. But then my hand fixed itself, not because I asked it to but just because it gave me control. And one day I noticed that my thumb was bent like the books all said. Possibly I should have had a teacher to force things on me. By the way there's a quote that goes "If you can't play it slow then you can't play it fast." Which is being frequently rephrased as "If you can play it slow then you can play it fast." I wish they stopped making it sound so easy.

It's pretty cool that you figured out proper technique without a teacher. Perhaps you have great instincts! "slow practice = fast practice". It's a famous saying. Perlman says it a lot and it's totally true.

Thank you so much! This will help a ton when I start learning Violin in September God willing. 2:50 Instead of leading with your wrist for shifting on the Violin, is it more like leading with your arm/elbow? Also, can you please explain why you don't want to bend your wrist? Does it have something to do with your shoulder holding the violin up instead of your left arm, and your left hand being used to create notes only? I mean, I guess you did kind of explain this at 5:00 with your hand being a "frame". Thanks again.

It's probably ok if you think of your hand leading the shift, in fact, that's common. However, the most important thing is to NOT bend your wrist. As you mentioned, you'll lose the frame in your hand. Also, in 1st position in particular, if you bend your wrist, you'll make it more difficult to reach fingers like the 4th finger, and you'll end up playing the 4th flat all the time because you wont' be able to make the stretch. Good luck in September and just be patient with your practice. You'll do great!

@KennedyViolins Thank you so much! I'll keep that in mind. So basically, your wrist and arm are connected like a wood plank.

@@KennedyViolins lol, is that a correct analogy? 😆 I'd like to keep my wrist and arm that straight

@@TheUnofficialGamerx Well, I'm not sure what you mean actually. Straight arm? I'm not sure what you mean by that.
