Kennel Cough! Giant Husky Does Everything He Can To Avoid Taking His Medicine!! (So Funny!!)

Hi guys, In our 10+ years of owning dogs we have never experienced this before. Teddys cough was constant with every breath came another wheeze I thought maybe he had inhaled a bit of bone or something which he was trying to bring back up. Never did I expect it to be Kennel Cough! I guess because we have never kennelled any of our pets before (thanks to grandma) we haven't really been exposed to it. But alas we have now experienced Kennel cough and it was hard going. It had a 10 day incubation period so we think the new puppy Titan brought it into the house when we went to the vets to get his puppy vaccinations as we hadn't been anywhere else or socialised with any other dogs, weirdly he never showed any symptoms though. Yet 7 days after Titan had his trip to the vet we were straight back in with an emergency appointment for Teddy. And then a few days after that Niko was struck down with it too. Its been a long 10 days of recovery and trying to medicate the dogs but thankfully we are on the other end of it now. Only Teddy and Niko suffered and they have since fully recovered Titan managed to not have any symptoms

Hard on the poor babies. I had my dog to groomers, brought him home, had surgery on my hand. I'm recovering, my boy started coughing, throwing up. Hard to clean up barf with only one hand to use. Benji was really sick. Hope things settle down for y'all. Poor babies. Blessings all. 💕 🤗 💕 😊

Oh thankful your all over the hump. My best friend husky when she was just a puppy had it and it was awful. Feeding her meds and force feeding her food (messy). Thankfully she responded well. We really bonded after this and she's become even more dear to me (and all of us) cause it :)

Titan's really vocal now, and he really told you off for putting him in the crate. Poor Teddy, he's never been sick before so this was probably a shock, and he is the biggest wimp when it comes to taking his medicine (him shunning Shane was funny). But then again, I'd be more worried about Niko because she's older. Poor pups for getting this, and hopefully they don't get it again.

Hoping you feel better Teddy with kennel cough. When Keith and I were in the beginning of our marriage, when leaving out of town had my brother to come over and watch the dogs 🐕. Back then had 4 Shih Tzus and one Huskey. We were told never leave your dogs at the kennel bc of kennel cough. Feel better beautiful Teddy ❤❤❤Joan

Sounds more like canine pneumonia than kennel cough to me. I fostered a Jack Russel that had KC and he didn't sound like this. He sounded like our dog who had pneumonia, he was treated and survived it, thank heavens!

My GSD/Husky had a very bad kennel cough and she had passed it off to my Brittany Spaniel. They both had a rough go of it and it was so difficult to get them to take their meds. I’m so glad neither of them developed it again! I’m so happy Teddy and Niko are better.

Next time you have to give them meds, especially the awful tasting ones, use vanilla ice cream, the one with sugar, not xylitol or harmful sweetners. For tablets, DO NOT crush, simply scoop some frozen ice cream (vanilla only) with a tablespoon, make a dent with your pinkie, place tablet/capsule in dent, cover with a bit more icecream and mould into a tiny ball, then give as a treat. For suspensions or liquid, just mix lightly with a tablespoon of vanilla icecream and give as a frozen treat too. The doggies will come willingly when rhey see you pull out the icecream from the freezer as it's "treat time". I've a snow dog too and learned this trick from the vets. Do brush their teeth at the end of the day because of the "sugary treat(s)" Best wishes to all the fur babies.

Glad you're on the back end of it now, Em. So sorry Teddy and Niko had to go through that. When Jamie gives Sherpa his meds, he always wraps the pills in a couple bits of rolled then folded ham and follows with a yummy treat. Never a problem there, but of course Sherpa is more like Phil. For solid pills (not capsules), I use a pill crusher, then stir into peanut butter. If you don't have a pill crusher on hand, the pill's too big for the pill crusher size, or to save money, you can place the pill in the bowl of one spoon, place another atop that, then press directly down (arms straight) with your thumbs and fingers against the spoon bowl assembly on the counter for resistance. If you have hand problems and can't do fine work, you can place the pill in the center of a baking sheet with sides, then use a saucepan atop it and press down with your fists or palm heels. If you're counter's too high, you're too short, or your hands and arms are weak, injured or disabled, you can place the baking sheet on the floor to get proper leverage, maybe use another smaller baking sheet or frying pan instead of the saucepan, and use your sole heels instead of hands. For capsules, I empty the contents into peanut butter or ground meat and mix. For oral syringe and dropper meds, I lift the side of their lip and squirt a little at a time down one jaw interior side of their mouth (never directly down the center bc gag reflex and wrong pipe hazard). With one cat, post op from being spayed, she wanted to be more in charge and taught me yet another way with the oral syringe for her pain med. She held the oral syringe with her paw, guiding it to her mouth herself and took a drop or two when she was ready, working steadily until she was done. All I did was load and hold the oral syringe and push the plunger to bubble up her drops. And encourage and reward her, of course. Much love to all. 💖💖💖

What you have to do, to bribe them to get their meds, it is just the same when you have to give medication to babies and children, they don't like it either.
