Five Thousand Stars!!!!!!!!! This is one of the baddest Blue Note LPs in the entire catalog! This is always as fresh as the first time I heard this masterpiece by K.D. Kenny Dorham was not only one of the finest trumpet stylists of all time, but also an incredible composer. He was truly underrated as a trumpeter but he's one of my top 10 favorite jazz composers along with Monk, Horace Silver, Strayhorn, Ellington, Bill Lee and others. Yes, that's a young Herbie Hancock along with some of the baddest Joe Henderson every recorded and an even younger (only 17 yrs old) Tony Williams along with Butch Warren. Honestly, Tony is playing his best on this record. He never played better than on this, his very first ever recording date!! K.D. knew how to put a band together to put his music forward in the best way possible. I transcribed Joe's entire tenor sax solo and my transcription was published in DownBeat magazine some years ago.

Same! His comping becomes increasingly more compelling throughout KDs solo, and then he brings it allllll the way back down for the sax solo. Then there’s a section in the sax solo where he’s trading 4 bars of chordal accompaniment with himself in two different registers. Then he takes a fantastic solo of his own!

@TastyMetal11 жыл бұрын
If you are at a loss at what to play, just play the blues convincingly! Jazz is rooted in the blues, and if you are unable to reference the changes accurately playing the blues is a respectable fallback. But this does not mean that you should gloss over learning how to masterfully play the changes...
