This gives me a wave of nostalgia. When I was five or six years old, my favorite movie in the world was Six Pack. I loved it to the point of drawing a picture of the #49 Camaro that Kenny drives for most of the movie's race scenes, and writing a letter to Kenny about the movie (and my at-the-time favorite song of his, The Gambler). As it turns out, my grandparents (Stephanie and Walt Prince) had been regulars at his concerts for years, enough to know him on a personal basis and regularly talk with him and his crew backstage before and after performances. They passed on my letter and drawing, and Kenny wrote back, telling me how much he enjoyed acting in Six Pack and how special the movie was to him (though on the public record he would often joke about how he wasn't a good actor and he had half a dozen movies to prove it). When I got to meet Kenny for the first time a couple of years later, due to my grandparents pulling some strings and getting me a backstage pass at the age of about nine, he still had the picture in his trailer and brought it out to show me. At the time, I couldn't understand why he would keep it (as my drawing skills had improved since then, and nine-year-old me didn't understand the importance of the picture to him). Fast-forward nearly a decade to The Gambler's Last Deal, Kenny's final tour. Kenny comes to Medford, Oregon and my grandparents get me another backstage pass, and I get to meet the legend one last time. I'm taller than him now, and he comes slowly out of the trailer to meet me, but he still has that spark in his eyes; old or not, he loves what he does. To my amazement, he recognizes me, and he steps back into his trailer for a moment. Out comes the colored-pencil-and-crayon drawing of a blue and white #49 Camaro, the picture older than my nieces at this point. Kenny pulled me aside for a moment and began to confide in me about how the picture and letter had come at a crucial turning point for him. He had been looking out over his crowds for years, constantly seeing his audience age with him. He had feared he was fading from the music scene, and that his songs weren't reaching new people. But that picture, one simple drawing and a letter of love to his music, helped change his mind. He began to notice younger audience members in the crowd, and as we all know he continued touring and doing what he loved until the day he no longer could. I'll never forget the expression on his face, a sort of pride and wonder, as he talked about my drawing having such an impact. I struggled to comprehend the idea that a small child could have such an impact on a country music legend like Kenny. Since that day, I've made sure to provide feedback to anyone and everyone I can. It turns out you really never know what kind of an impact your words might have on someone, no matter who they might be. A musical giant is still a person, like you or me, and one good or bad day can change the world.

Truly appreciated that great memory you’ve shared. Thanks. My whole family loves Kenny. What’s funny is we’re Mexican and Caucasian and fled from gang violence in Los Angeles for my uncles in rural Virginia at the high point of Kenny Rogers career. When we left ( my mother, 5 brothers and sisters &I ) we drove to San Francisco in the back of a station wagon with one 8 track- Kenny Rogers greatest hits playing all the way. To this day, I still get strange looks as i drive along jamming Kenny really loud in my car .. probably because I’m quite Hispanic looking😂… will always love Kenny’s music. Thanks again for sharing!
