I´d say the center of the song is really that a part of one dies when one makes wrong decisions. She´s leaving a one who loves her for a one who satisfies her more. What a beautiful song and so real to life. You're in love with one person and in love with another person, and your in the middle. Such a true life situation. Hard to say goodbye to one to be with the other because you care so much about the first one. Life's choices are tough. And we've lost Kenny Rogers now just a few days ago to death. +Paul London no wonder when I listen to it, there's sort of "Richard Marx's vibe" (?) in the song. although Kenny Rogers was famous for country songs, I think Marx and Kenny Rogers both have that same "feel" in their music that I love to listen to.
