Look, the reason this trade was kept under wraps had nothing to do with AD-it was because if Mavs fans had caught wind of it, they would’ve completely lost their minds. Lakers fans? Sure, they might have been annoyed, but deep down, they know their championship window is basically shut, and a rebuild is coming whether they like it or not. A trade leak for them would’ve been inconvenient. For Dallas, it would’ve been catastrophic. Nico Harrison admitted this deal had been in the works for weeks, meaning the Lakers had been throwing out offers for a while. And let’s be real-when those talks first started, the package was probably a whole lot bigger. But Nico got in too deep, and Pelinka bait-and-switched him. What started as harmless banter over coffee turned into a full-on ambush. By the time it was all said and done, the Lakers had whittled the offer down, and Nico had no leverage left to fight back. Pelinka played it perfectly. He put Nico in a corner and hit him with the classic “Take it now or it’s dead” move. That’s why this deal broke at midnight-zero time for second thoughts, zero outside opinions. Just a rushed decision that left Dallas coming up way short on value. And why? @TomDaKat Huh? I guess you don't watch basketball or understand basketball. A supermax contract is conditional and players have to meet certain performance criteria to be eligible to sign a supermax. Which is why some players get upset when they don't make All-NBA teams(Klay Thompson and Paul George). Luka was eligible for the contract due to the merits of making First Team All NBA for the last 5 years. Getting traded actually causes Luka to lose out on around $115mil with his next extension due to the requirements that players can only sign supermax deals with the teams that drafted them.

If you were to ask me a few days ago to rank the LEAST likely players to get traded in the NBA, my list would have looked like this: 10 Mitchell 9 Paulo 8 Brunson 7 Ant 6 Giannis 5 Tatum 4 Jokic 3 Shai 2 Wemby 1 Luka. Face of the franchise. Most loved player to their current franchise in the entire league. Mavs attendance no1 in the league becuase of Luka. Arguably the funnest player to watch in the entire league. Time will tell, but I’m not too sure about Doncic. Injuries are piling up, he’s not committed to staying in shape, and we haven’t seen a player of his style win a championship in recent history. High usage, high volume, no defense. AD is the best 2 way player in basketball, the only player to make both All-NBA teams. AD was overshadowed in LA because 40 year Bron insisted on jacking up more shots than AD. When AD has appropriate volume, he can give you 40 pts and 20rebs every other night. The main reason it’s a bad trade is because Luka wasn’t shopped properly, Mavs could’ve gotten much more obviously. But considering Luka’s health, Mavs might have a better chance to win it all this year with a healthy AD.

I agree, interesting. I looked up Markeif Morris's personal history and he has family and an organization in Philadelphia. Drummond is lost in the shuffle in Philadelphia. This would be a perfect opportunity in Los Angeles for Andre Drummond. He seems like a professional dude wanting to fit in. Plus he might even gel with Bron when Luka is ready to play. That's some big dudes. Luka is what, 6'9"+? Bron is a beast at 6'7"+ Andre Drummond is 6'11" I believe, and about 250lbs. He can go into 'rebound machine' mode. When Wood is back, that's a very interesting opportunity to have suddenly a big team. Nothing against Morris, but he's probably going to be bought out if the Lakers don't find a place for him. It would be good to get Morris someplace he wants to be.

Luka is great but he has issues, Rick Carlyle turned down an extension because he didn't want to coach Luka anymore and Porzingis wanted out, he didn't want to play with Luka. Jason Kidd is old school he had problems with Giannis when he was with the Bucks. He was on the staff that won in 2020 with the Lakers. He probably believes that AD and Kyrie are better than Luka and Kyrie.

Kenny broke it down perfectly: Could he lead? Was the money too much? All valid points. We don't know what happened behind closed doors with either franchise. In any case, both players have their issues with injuries. If A.D. is healthy, the Mavs are in a better situation without the overuse/defensive issues of Doncic, and a more balanced, defense-oriented team. L.A. is going to suffer until Doncic is healthy, and defensively...they're shot for now. Neither team is winning a title anytime soon.
