Superb, elegant playing. Thank you for showcasing this talented musician, Norm, and thanks Kenny for the relatable tale of a young guitarist battling the “F” chord, lol.

The way Kenny exemplifies all the different techniques and how much of a struggle it was to learn how to play an F chord when he started out is right in line with a lot of my own education as a guitar student. What I wish I could tell him if I had his ear is how I learned to play bar chords only five months after I began taking guitar lessons so I could get around the struggle of playing that chord. I can do it now, but I often prefer to skip over it. The other thing I would tell not only him but as many other aspiring guitarists as possible is how useful it is if they learned to play classical technique with the guitar resting on the left side instead of the right. I play exclusive use my fingers today, and that leg position is a focal point of making that technique a success ( not to mention enabling me to play one with a Flying V body with practically no struggle).

The Fmaj fretting problem is mostly about increasing and maintainng one's fretting hand's strength and especially one's fretting endurance. And playing regularly. The best way I know to build up fretting strength and endurance is to confront the problem head-on. Play songs using only 4, 5 and eventually 6 string barre chords. Remember that with chord shapes where your fingers are on the lower G, B and E strings you, call allow your thumb to ride a bit higher up back of the neck and still ge ood tone. Conversely, with chord shapes where you're fretting the low E, A and D strings you'll get better tone if you place your thumb lower on the neck. More beginner players get discouraged by teachers who tell them to keep their thumb locked onto in the same exact spot on the back of he neck. If a given player is a strong teenage male or fully grown man with strong hands, you probably have the strength to fret a guitar effectively. But if you are an elderly man, a small man with small hands or an average sized teenage girl or grown woman and have relatively smaller, weaken hands, you'll likely have to develop more left hand fretting strength, especially to play the full six string Fmaj chord shape. Remember that all guitar chord shape have one thing in common: all guitarists must equally oppose the fretting pressures they apply to the fretboard with their fingers with their thumbs behnd the neck. Fretting with one finger is easier than with two, which is easier than using three which is still easier than fretting all four! If yo can afford a better quality guitars, the required fretting pressures are somewhat less, allowing the player to be more agile and free to move around the fretboard. So players can partly solve this problem by buying a bette axe, or a guitar with a shorter scale which has less tension on the srings.. Fmaj is an imortant chord shape to master, because it is a movable barre chord, allowing the player to play in any key without a capo. The Bbmaj shape is also a slideable Amaj shape, allowing any key to be played. Also remember that when fretting the six-string version of the Fmaj shape, you must apply presure with all four fingees and your thumb. That takes strength and to do so for a thre inut song takes endurance. That's why your hand gets tired and hurts early on. But you may be applying TOO MUCH PESSURE onto the fingerboard and bak of he neck with both fingers and thumb. Experiment to find he right fretting presures for your guitar. Too much fretting presure causes which tension which leads to pain. Butif youpresist, after a couple weeks of struggle yo hfretting hand withstengthen just by playing gevey day. .Try practising bouncing back and forth from Fmaj to the other chords which harmonize well with the Fmaj chord, using the curcle of fiths as a guide. On the first beat of each bar, play the Fmaj with a downstroke on the first beat of one bar and then to Bb and back. Or from Fmaj to Cmaj and back. Try to us a litlefretting pleasure as you can while still gettin goodton from the strings. or Gmaj from other chords which hamonize wih Fmaj. Of course, you could play Fmaja lot easier by using a capo. You might capo the third fret and play in Dmaj. Perhaps you could capo the first fret and play in Emaj to sound like Fmaj. Or try capoing the fifth fret and play in Cmaj. Wanna play a blues tune in Bb becauae you're jamming with a horn player? Capo the first fret and play in A minor. Eventually you'll learn how to use your middle, ring and pinky fingers to fret some of the common guitar chord shapes and scale shapes that you normally fret with your index, middle and ring fingers whe playingup against the nut. Chords like like Gmaj, Cmaj, Dmaj and their variants like minor chords, minor sevenths, major sevenths augmented chords, diminished chords, sus2 and sus4 chords etc. If you get to this point you'll probably begin to need the capo less and less. But capos certainly makes playing some tunes easier. Last thought. The simpler Fmaj shape on strings 1-4 are easier to play and slide, because it isn't barred. But it still has a nice F root note on the fourth string. So pla tha chord until yo cn do it in yout sleep. Then pla h five-string Fmaj shape until you've masterd it. Them move on to th six-string Fmaj, one of the hardest shapes to fret cleanly while also producing good tone. Remember this: practise makes perfect and guitar players have plenty of ways to fret an Fmaj chord. And a lifetime to discover all that the guitar has to offer. So don't sweat it of you don' get the six-string Fmaj chord right away. Rome wasn't built in a day.

The best way to use fingerpicks---is not to use them---gives you some added volume--but does not allow any feel or nuance. Now a days with great improvements in amplification you don't need the added volume of fingerpicks. The great Leo Kottke stopped using finger picks early in his career---and felt his technique improved when he stopped.
