Two models you don't see too often from Martin Guitars, but stellar instruments on the higher end of the Martin Spectrum. Today we compare the OM-42 vs the 000-42…. both with Rosewood, featuring the exact same body shape. But what's the difference?? Watch as Paul & Quinton run you through the 2-3 differences and compare tonality. Does one stand out to your ears? Leave a comment.

I played a 000-42 today. Those "40" series Martins are no joke. Seriously fine woods throughout. Amazing sound.

Quinton, paid for (a guitar) means a lot. Personally, I like the 000 as it sounds warmer. Make it a 12-fret, even better. 2 other guitars for comparison would be the Modern Deluxe version (000-28 MD and OM-28 MD). Thanks Quinton and Paul.

These two Martin models (000-42 and OM-42) are very special, both in terms of sound and beauty. They deserve all the compliments.

Just picked up a new 2008 OM-42, but with myrtle wood, back and sides. What a difference in sound the wood makes compared to the Indian rose wood.

The bracing is also forward position on the OM and rear (not middle) position on the 000. That makes a difference, too.

Quinton, I love my CEO 7 too and I think that you helped me close the deal in my mind (and mine is also paid for, thank God). But I would put one of those on my list because I don't have a new rosewood in the last 40 years.

Stunning instruments both, the 000 just takes it for me but they’re so close. These are my dream guitars, if I only had the money.

Over my speakers, the OM sounded more present and produced more sound given that Quinton was playing somewhat softly. Like most players, I'd have to see how each of them felt in the hand to decide which one to purchase. On specs alone, I would lean toward the 000. Purchasing any instrument on specifications alone is not always the wisest purchasing criterion.

1/16” difference in the bracing might not seem like a lot, but it sounds like a lot. That was the difference between the d-35 and the rest when it was first introduced; it used the 1/4” OM bracing. Dreadnoughts typically use 5/16” bracing. (I know somebody gonna come at me saying the three piece back makes a sound difference, or the back bracing, which might a little; if it does, it’s nowhere near the difference the top bracing makes.)

Lage plays an OM 18 not an OM 28 or 42. Sides are mahogany vs. rosewood.

Hi C.N. - No doubt he's played OM-18s and I believe his longtime favorite was a 1939 OOO-18; appears he's on to his Collings signature OM. My intent in the reference was to note that OOO's and OM's and related non-dreadnoughts are also great choices for "flatpicking" applications - not just for fingerstylists! here's a nice video of him discussing his Martin and Collings - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoioZopveM-IopI And here's a nice one of him shredding on a Waterloo :) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/faCvfGd9ppiqg6M Thanks for watching!

Great move by Martin to delete the inlays on the bridge on the 000. Those inlays on the 42’s were always a deal-breaker for me.

Quinton can make a Cigar-Box guitar sound wonderful. These two are stunning to look at and listen to Quinton display his skills. Being a fan of "short" scale guitars, the 000 would be my choice; especially since the tone differences seem to be minimal. Thanks again!

From what I can tell, if your considering this size of a guitar, you would probably be best served with a Collings OM2H.
