I could hear bits of 7/4 but this type of music would lose me if it were 4/4. I just don't 'get it'. It's so free sounding that it almost feel like there's no form but I'm sure there is one under the surface.

@@joshuahill5441 well I'm still learning about forms in jazz and it's not always obvious as a beginner. Don't be an ass... there are enough of those around

It takes a bit of work to be able to follow the time when great players such as these are playing as freely over 7 as they are in this performance! But, as one might imagine Mr Werner saying, “Don’t worry about it! You probably grew up tapping your foot or clapping along to all kinds o’things in 4 without even thinking...etc.” Try tuning in to the various groupings or subdivisions within 7, most prominently, accented groupings of 2 2 and 3, think “Dada Dada Dadada...etc. (including dotted eighths over the “3” chunk, which might sound like another group of “2” but delayed). Sometimes it sounds more like “big 7” or 7/4 as opposed to 7/8 (which is all bullshit unless we’re looking at written out music anyway) but that clearly happens in this performance as well as their much older recording from Smalls in NYC in the late 90’s? as well). Anyway, as a music educator who graduated from UNT that “lazarus” guy’s comment was upsetting to me-what a dick! Who knows...maybe he can’t play or doesn’t have anyone around him to impress-regardless, I wish you the very best in all your musical endeavors, and give yourself time to work that kind of stuff out and really feel it confidently, Thibodaux!

@@favoritefolkpicks Thanks mate, now that's a really helpful response! I know this stuff takes time to be absorbed into your your head. I will definitely try those things out, and thanks for being kind. cheers!
