In this video I went to Perley Minnesota to work the sugar beet harvest. The harvest lasted 38 days. We worked a total of 19 days and were shut down due to poor weather conditions for the remainder. We had a few nice days, but the last two weeks were long, cold, windy and wet. During the down time the Arctic Fox Truck Camper was feeling like a jail cell. Unfortunately the cell phone reception in Perley is almost non existent, thankfully I keep a bunch of DVD's in the camper.
I explored the NW corner of Minnesota which is primarily farm land. I ventured into a small North Dakota town and found a retired train caboose, other then that I didn't find much to look at. After spending 10 days re-watching season one, two, three and four of The Office I decided to go home until work resumed.
Mandi and I explored a State Forest only miles from her home. It is one we enjoy many times throughout the year, but this was the first time I filmed there. If you pay attention to the scenery you will notice how quickly the leaves change. When I left home the leaves were starting to change, my trip back home found the leaves in full color, and when I left the fields were dirt and the trees were almost bare.
My camera was giving me issues throughout the month. Unfortunately I lost a lot of footage of the harvest work, but I was able to put together a short video documenting my time there.
Thanks for coming along on the travels!
Thanks for watching.

The workers were great. The folks from Crystal Sugar were nice. I didn't feel the expectations were too high. After a few weeks of 12.5 hours days, 7 seven days a week people are done socializing. Just be ready for cold and wet....not crazy cold...in the 30's. But when your soaking wet in 33 degree weather with 25 mph winds it starts to wear away at a person. My advice....don't quit, you'll get a nice bonus at Christmas if you finish it out. Some workers carry drama in from prior years of working the harvest....don't engage with their high-school behaviors, and remember it will eventually end. Then you can say you've been there, done that! Have Fun!

The job is all about putting yourself in the proper mindset. Go there expecting to go to work, get dirty, go back to your camper and fall asleep. Do that same process for a few weeks straight and its over. The days where work gets canceled can be really boring. There's not much around and cell service sucks. I used the down days to wash clothes. The nearest town with any services from my sight was a 40 min drive. It's quick, easy money, stick it out till the end and you will get a Christmas bonus. Have Fun!

It's amazing how much attention these truck campers get. Every other time at the gas station someone is commenting or asking questions. I'm not good at self-promotion so I never mention the channel. I should get a decal adverting the channel name. Even though truck campers have been around for over 60 years people are curious about them, and often say they never seen one in person.

It seems like a lifetime ago. I made this video right after I left the police force and started working for the Department of pubkic Safty. I took a few weeks off to go on a road trip out west and work the sugar beet harvest. It was on my bucket list. I probably won't ever have a chance to do that again. The last 2 years have flown by. It reminds me of how fast and short our time on earth is.

I will check it out. I have been on a two day road trip. Before I left I picked up the new Gopro 10. Unfortunately the old 9 works better. The new 10 has frozen up multiple times. I have to pull the battery to reset it. The video footage becomes corrupt when it freezes and once again I have lost a TON of footage. I also purchased a Sony Vz-1. It will be going back as well. Unfortunately the camera does not come with a detachable lens, the stock lens will not give me the distance needed to vlog like I do. The next video will be a bugger to edit with the footage I have, but I want to stay consistent. I will check out the M50 tonight. Thanks!

It was a bucket list thing for me. It's really good money and easy work. It's more a mental game keeping your mind busy. Before the harvest begins people socialize, if your into that. I'm more of a loaner. But I did meet a really interesting couple living out of a bus. Once work starts you won't have time to talk. You wake up, go to work, go to bed....do that for a few weeks and walk away with 5 or 6 grand.

I grew up in this area and go back every year to help a buddy out with his harvest on his farm. The weather either cooperates greatly or can be incredibly fickle. There have been two years in my life, 30+ years, where they didn't harvest barely any of the beets. While there isn't a lot of variation in terrain in NW MN/ Eastern ND, there are still some niftty small towns and many state parks to check out.

There is a honey wagon that comes around every Friday while we ate working. You have to have a sewer hose hook up to the camper. I'll be honest... it leaves a bit of a mess....but you're tired and don't really care when u get back from working. Unfortunately, there are no showers or outhouses. The hourly rate is not that good. 18 something an hour. Where you make money is on the overtime. It is time and a 1/2 after 8 hours, we work 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week. Time and a 1/2 on Saturdays and double time on Sundays. Then towards the middle of the season people start leaving because of the long hours or the weather. When that happens the company will pay more. The last few week's we got time and a 1/2 on every hour worked because they needed to keep employees.

If I remember right it was between five and six thousand dollars. It lasted about a month. We had close to 2 weeks of getting paid, but not doing any work. It was the first year they implemented the pay to stay program. The temperatures were too warm to stack the beats. The actual work took eighteen days. After the first six or seven days the weather got really crappy. A lot of people left. The last eight or nine days they paid us time and a half for every hour. And double time on saturdays and sunday. They raised the pay so people would stay. I was considered an oiler. I did maintenance to the piling machines. My hourly wage was right around nineteen dollars an hour. This was over two years ago.
