@@noelogbeide7135 All indications within the SAFWY novel are that Kuruyashiki _did_ try to fight her at some point, but Unohana beat him up so bad that he became afraid of her enough to start calling her Retsu-neesan (older sis). Even worse, the novel literally has Kuruyashiki say that he's never seen anything as frightening as Unohana when she's angry; so not only did Kuruyashiki do something to make Unohana mad, but she literally put the fear of god into him afterward.

At that time Zaraki was weaker than Unohana (of course we found out that Zaraki had been limiting his strength since his first fight against Unohana and in this case Base Zaraki was always stronger than Unohana). In other words Unohana wins this fight

But kuryyashiki technically wasn't a kenpachi as unoha was still alive. Also, the main reason Kuruyashiki lost was because he was not allowed to use his bankai in the Seretei.

Yeah he couldn’t use his bankai due to it would quite literally kill everyone, so In the fight between Azashiro he only released his Shikai.

Still Azashiro and Kuruyashiki had the required power and charisma to bear the title. I wish it would have really been consistent with having to kill the current holder of the title to challenge any newcomers . Because it would give more weight to it and also solidify as the Gotei 13’s secret weapon that gets stronger with each generation. Like the Sith rule of two.

Call me cynical, but I think the reason for this is that this is a sort of made-up tradition. There were no Kenpachi before Unohana and every one after her was seemingly on a "making shit up as they go" kind of process. Just so happens that murder is the most easily made up part of it, so that kind of stuck.

The explanation is that the strong in their path to become the strongest would always end up killing the actual holder of the title. You can't become a kenpachi without killing the last kenpachi because that's the only true proof of your superiority, but Unohana "retired" so all the others that came after her didn't have the chance to get the title. Is not a tradition is just logic, to be the champion you have to beat the actual champion, and since kenpachis are usually bloodlusted psychopaths it usually ends in death.

That second point is interesting, I never really made that connection until now, good catch. I also want to add to this comment, and mention how, every bankai has some sort of drawback, but Kenpachi’s has several, and its that his own monstrous strength causes his body severe damage, and that his bankai robs him of his senses. For a character like Kenpachi, who lives for nothing more than the enjoyment and thrill of the fight, his bankai removing his ability to actually enjoy them goes against that specific desire, while granting him the sole desire to win. Because of this, I see it as being a last resort technique, like Kenpachi’s kendo.

Or....Kubo has been telling the truth the entire time, and simply downplaying the "Kenpachi" in order to make Ichigo look good. Unohana wasn't defeated when Aizen fought Dangai Ichigo, so she could have been the trump card. Not only that, they purposely sent Unohana to Hueco Mundo and not one person was willing to fight her, in fact, it appeared as if Aizen did all he could to avoid her. Even to the extent that she was the first to figure out Aizen's secret in the Soul Society arc by examining the corpse long enough. Mind you, she isn't Urahara or Mayuri

Someone who is actually more feared for her fighting than respected for her healing. It also appears that Unohana wasn't allowed to fight unless provoked, which was probably made by the central chambers as no one, not even Aizen, made a plan to fight her in the slightest. Aizen, WITH Gin, had the perfect chance to get rid of her when no one was around and she was under Aizen's Shikai's illusions. Then, he could have gotten rid of her AGAIN when he made all the Captains fight each other. We believe if Ichigo failed, then Urahara's trump card was a rested, angry, and informed Yachiru Unohana who had been watching everything play out while also healing fighters in a way that taught her about their bodies and battles. Aizen didn't have a Wonderweiss for Unohana. As for Zaraki....we believe Kubo WANTS to show him off, but reels it in because a trained and disciplined Zaraki, ON PAPER, should be unstoppable. Imagine that guy with Hoho, Shunpo, Kido, Kenjutsu, FULL Kendo, and actual hand-to-hand combat training....the man has NO REAL TRAINING BESIDES SWINGING A SWORD FOR DEAR LIFE AND A DAY OF KENDO!

Kenpachi is a title reserve to the strongest shinigami, in kendo habilities, and not in overall habilities like kido, shikai and bankai. But, generally, the Kenpachis are the 2⁰ or 3⁰ strongest shinigami in all generations of Gotei 13.

I think it's because kenpachi titles or division its for someone who actually like to fight and strong too. If you read the novel you will notice that every kenpachi have the same traits, they basically love battle. Like unohana and zaraki. And I don't think Yama need kenpachi titles since he already a head captain, it's a different division after all, and I think he is the one that make the title and division since he is the creator of gotei 13. And for example if zaraki became Head Captain, there will be someone who take the 11th division and become new kenpachi. You cant have both division after all. Kinda hard to understand but basically its all about the division. Kenpachi division or 11th division is a division specialized for fight.

Other division can't have it even tho there's someone stronger like shunsui and ukitake or even unohana in ss arc. Only way for them to become kenpachi is to become division 11 captain. It's like automatically given as you become one. And if you ask why someone like Yama or s0 don't have kenpachi title, cause basically they're don't need it and can't too. Since they're already have higher title like head captain and zero division(soul king guard)

But in your explanation you say others hold other titles like squad 0 captains or head captain, but those is just ranks in the soul society but kenpachi is different. Like the rank zaraki has is squad 11 captains. Let me make a reference from one piece. It's like whitebeard has the rank emperor of the sea but his given the title the world's strongest man which reflects his strength, now this is the same for zaraki, he has the rank squad 11 captain but given the title "kenpachi"(the strongest), which in his case, it's simply just a lie. That title should be someone else's like yamamoto or chobei, for example, coz they also just have the rank head captain or squad 0 captain but they can also have titles like kenpachi which now might be true in their case. This is all bs mixed with a fanmade novel. The Kenpachi title has nothing to do with Gotei 13. The Kenpachi is simply assigned to squad 11 *IF* they become a part of Gotei 13. It's still entirely possible for the Kenpachi to exist outside of Gotei 13, which is a preocupation that Central 46 had concerning the prospect of Zaraki rebelling. Hell, Unohana was the Kenpachi before Gotei 13 even existed. Now that we got that straight, The 2nd Kenpachi came to be because someone stronger than Unohana came along and inherited it by proof of strength. Because that's what it means to be Kenpachi: to be the strongest. It's not up to Unohana to decide who is Kenpachi. Either she's the strongest or she is not. So the 2nd Kenpachi was stronger than Unohana. It's that simple. Then came the 3rd, then the 4th, etc. Zaraki killed the 10th. But Zaraki was an anomaly. Zaraki at one point after killing the 10th, lowered his power to the point where he was no longer the strongest, and thus unworthy of the title. He became weaker than even the 1st Kenpachi, Unohana. So Unohana helped him restore it for good.
