Yep, is actually really common in manga, anime and even video games. Most people you see holding they sword (or wooden sword) like that with 2 hands (while wearing a full body armor) and fighting 1 vs 1 other people is most likely Kendo, I think if I remember correctly there is even a Digimon who is a reference to Kendo I forgot the name of that Digimon.

-As im, sure many may have commented, "Santa Teresa" means Praying Mantis, People often miss this overarching metaphor laid over his characterization. They also miss the moon symbology layered all over his design. First is the moon symbolism, in more than 1 scene he's shown under the moon, this plays a part in a couple of ways but most importantly is the idea the Nnoitora metaphorically reaches for the moon, and he cannot reach it (Which is his true fear, that there are people who are simply out of his reach). That goes directly into the second and most important aspect of his character, and it's that he's based on a Praying Mantis. Male Praying mantis are beheaded after mating with a Female Mantis,...this real-life concept plays into Nnoitora's mindset and actions, and is directly symbolic of his relationship with Nel. (He's not simply misogynistic rather he's a pathetic man, afraid because he knows he can never reach Nel, She's above him like the moon and feels the full weight of being inferior.) -Its more to it, but I don't want to make this comment even longer than it already is lol. edit. For those not seeing the moon symbolism, crescent moon shoes, crescent moon horns when released. crescent moon-shaped blades, a full moon on his clothes behind his head, and the most intentional shoot was in his flashback where he's sitting under the moon alone in the dark.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with Santa Teresa (The Saint Teresas, there are 6 of them and they're also representation of the moon if you read enough into it) Santa Teresa is often misinterpreted for Praying Mantis by non native Spanish speaking folks. The right spanish terminology is "Mantis Religiosa" which is a specific type of Praying Mantis. Either way I like your interpretation of this character so we can go with that haha.

You're missing the part where Nnoitra just wants to die, he hates living, he hates the world he lives in, he hates the people in it, he hates the moon eternally looking down at all of this, but above all else he hates himself. It's due to this hatred that he can't just let all that stuff kill him without a fight, and it's due to that hatred that makes him grow stronger and have his desired death get more out of his reach. He in this pursuit of power to feel superior to the things he hates becomes what he hates so that others with seek to kill him, hense the moon symbolism on himself, he's become what he hates. It's why he picks fights and acts so scummy, to get people to attempt to fight and kill him. It's also why he keeps getting pissed at Nel for not killing him. This is why his "aspect of death" is despair, he is the one in despair. It's a very cool representation of depression due to hatred that honestly was done very well considering not a lot of viewers realize that, just like with people who have depression in real life, no one notices it. The manga makes all of this MUCH more clear TBF, especially with the poem Kubo writes about him, it ends with something to the effect of "I want to reach as high as the moon, so I cant see the things I hate anymore". I get that you probably already know this but I just think that aspect of his character is more important and interesting than his inferiority complex. Honestly the best written character in Bleach.

@@MatthewCJoy I think that, accordingly to the fact that it reprents his despair ( a common theme associated to the moon even across the entirety of Bleach ), the moon also represents Nel. As you say, he seriously, deeply believes he will never be able to reach the moon/her. So he rages, but what it hides is a form of love. But he is a hollow. He is a beast. She is a refined, elegant, intelligent being, she looks down on him, he knows why, he agrees in a way, because she is what he is not, she has "meaning", she has a "reason". And he can't see himself as someone who could ever be equal to her. Just because he is another hollow. She doesn't even enjoy battle or any of his lowly barbaric habits in the slightest, it pains her, almost "taints" her from his point of view. When Nnoitra goes into resurreccion, an image of his hollow form is shown where he climps atop of cadavers of hollows, trying to reach the moon, probably in rage. Nel, on her side, shows a special amount of care to Nnoitra, she does not look down on him to feel superior, but because he somehow catches her attention. Perhaps because she sees right through this hidden depression of his, and that it goes against all she wishes to not be as an intelligent hollow. Or perhaps because she is truly fond of him in particular, as the poems could hint, and that she tries so hard because she wants to, to take the words of the poems, fly for him in the sinking Hueco Mundo. She wants to lift him up, as he cannot see himself anywhere but chained to the dust of that empty desert. Naturally. People who are deeply suicidal and depressed violently refute things that could potentially save them. Why this is such an interesting fight in Bleach is because on top of writing a great character, this singlehandly tells you all you need to know what it is to be an average Hollow cursed to wander in the Hueco Mundo. It follows up Grimmjow nicely as well. Hollows are sad creature. DEEPLY sad creatures. Becoming arrancars doesn't allow most of them to be saved from all the negativity they are born from. Wallowing in their despair may have given them glimpses of reasons, but they, are still, nothing. So long as they don't evolve like Nel. And the worst about it is that their own sadness and negativity makes them MORE powerful. It summarize the deep emptiness tied to instincts, and the need of a reason, both important notions of Bleach's writing. And it all falls into despair, one of the primary negative emotions along with fear that will follow until the final arc of the story. Ichigo, since the Soul Society arc, has been fighting against that same moon, filling them all with despair. That's literally the name of his move, fangs made to reach the sky. The number 4, 5 and 6 of the Espada along with Ichigo and Inoue were easily some of the best part of the arc's writing.

Funny thing (I don't remember if it's said in those episodes because of the cuts so sorry if I repeat) Commander Genryusai Yamamoto stopped teaching kendo to Kenpachi after only one day because he and the Chamber of the 46 felt that he could become a threat to Soul Society if he kept his training going on. So Kenpachi has no Shikai, no Bankai, no sword technique and is still one of the strongest Captain of the Gotei 13. Beast ! x)

Here is a very interesting collection (of several youtube comments and personal thoughts) which analyzes the character of Nnoitra as well as its relationship with Nel. Good reading ;) Nnoitra is a character that I think can only really be appreciated on rewatches of the show. He's a horrible, sexist monster, but he's a monster fueled by a crippling inferiority complex born from people constantly pitying him. Nel herself is partially responsible for shaping Nnoitra into the monster he is. From the beginning(flashback) we see that Nnoitra is utterly obsessed with nelliel opinion of him. Nnoitra had fallen so deep into despair that one of his coping mechanisms was that he wanted Nelliel to acknowledge him as a warrior. When nelliel was around he would kill all hollows no matter the power and even killed an adjuchas begging for his life. But even then, this only sets him into deeper depression. He still feels inferior to Nel as she constantly mocks him. Nel destroys all his ways of coping with his despair. Nnoitra's self-worth is something she doesn’t understand, making him feel worthless. You see she mocks him but not as a way to hurt him. She thinks it would make him want to become like her manipulating his pride. But ultimately she’s making him worse and worse, driving him into an animal seeking her validation for self worth. He wants to surpass her as a way to be acknowledged as a warrior. But if that was the case, then why didn’t he kill her? When Szayel and him crack her skull open, why does he end her life ? It’s because that’s not what he seeks. It was at this moment where he cut ties from his past. Killing her would not give him the validation that he seeks. As I explained for such a being with zero self worth, this isn’t it. This isn’t changing what Nel thinks of him. Nel’s toxic effect on him led him to this decision. But ultimately this wasn’t what he would have wanted. As he’s free of her, he can finally improve on his own and get healthier. But of course he still wants to surpass her next time. He doesn’t mind dying to Nel as long as she views him as a warrior. You see when nnoitra is fighting chad he spares chad and I forgot what he says but he says something indicating that he wouldn’t get anything from destroying a small fry. This indicates that he’s evolved and gotten healthier. In the flashback, he would kill every being no matter their power craving validation. This would utterly put him further into despair making him despite himself as his problem is from within himself but also from Nel as his digression into further despair stems from their toxic relationship. That’s why his scene with Chad indicated some sort of progression now that Nel is gone. And also it’s important to note that he now has someone who cares deeply for him. That’s Tesla. We also know that Nnoitra cares for Tesla a bit because he showed emotion right before his death. Fast forward to his fight with Nel he’s happy that Nel is using her sword and ready to kill him as if acknowledging him as a warrior. He’s finally strong enough for her to use her sword against him. Everything he’s done so far was for this moment. To him, he had finally gotten her validation. Unlike in the past where he says he hates and despises her, now he is in the same position as he is now. Knees on the floor with Nel starting down on him. Except this time she’s releasing her sword to kill him. What he ultimately desires. This is who he desired to die in battle too. Not kenpachi. This is until Nel spares his life. She says “be at ease, I will not take your life”. You can imagine how nnoitra feels. He’s crushed and destroyed from this. She’s basically just robbed all his progression away from him and sunk him into despair even further. Everything he’s worked for to finally achieve her approval is crushed as she’s basically just told him he’s still a child. And then even after all this, she returns to her child state. After all this, he even loses the chance to battle her again, and earn her approval. He wanted to die by her. He lost it all. What devastating moments these are for him. Obviously this doesn't excuse his terrible actions or the fact that he was an asshole from the start, but he's a much more complex character than people give him credit for. He's not just an Arrancar version of Kenpachi, he's much more nuanced than that given how little screen time he actually has. He's a bitter, wounded person that covers up his insecurities with a vile exterior. The short flashbacks we get really show us how crippling his inferiority complex is and how his despair has driven him too long for death in battle. The way Kubo writes his characters is really unique in that he mostly doesn't reveal very much about that character but wants us to figure it out with the little info that he gave us.

Just a fun fact in the manga Nnoitora has a poem written about him by Kubo(creator of bleach) that goes “We are insects, Parasitic worms writhing in malicious constancy, Soaring past the moon you look up to Until you pathetic creatures are no longer visible.” Which is basically speaking about his inferiority complex. Another fact is in the manga this chapter was called ‘higher than the moon’ which is why the moon on his head was cut off by Kenpachi symbolizing his inability to do grow.

The wait was hard. 😂 Arrancar and this arc took forever cause of fillers. I thought the same thing you did, that this would be when we got to see Kenpachi's Bankai. But when you think about it, what they did in the episode makes sense, too. Kenny's always relied on sheer strength and speed. His fatal flaw (so to speak) is that he doesn't actually fight to win, he just fights to have fun. He ignores things like technique and strategy (and injuries) and just keeps swinging and swinging with his sword until either he or his opponent just can't swing anymore. And what's more, he holds himself back in terms of power, what with his eyepatch and everything. That includes only ever swinging his sword with one hand, literally only using half his strength every time he swings. Imagine trying to hit a golf ball, for example, with only one hand on the club. In sum, using two hands not only doubles the strength of his swing, but it injects some actual discipline into his style. He was finally ready to stop playing around and end the fight.

Ok here's some bleach facts for ya miss maam. Hope ya read this cuz this will help you understand and see why Nnoitora is one of my favorite characters in the show. A lot of characters from bleach are based off of real life organisms. Grimmjow for example is based off of panthers. That's why he wants to be at "the top of the food chain" as he says so often. He wants to be the king. He want to be the strongest, because in their natural habitats, panthers are the apex predators and thats why Grimmjow also strives for that goal. Nnoitora is based off of the praying mantis. Male praying mantis tend to be smaller and weaker then the female ones. They also get eaten after mating with the female mantises. That is why Nnoitora does not want a female to be stronger then him. His aspect of death is despair, this is because a male mantis knows that after they mate to procreate, their death is inevitable. Also Nnoitora felt despair and hopelessness because he realized that his life really had no meaning. A female mantis also tends to eat the male head first... and where is Nnoitora's hollow hole? On his head. Nel also didn't help the case either. She was very condescending and looked down on Nnoitora which is not gonna help his inferiority complex. Why do you think the only one person that Nnoitora keeps around him is a submissive male? Tesra genuinly loves Nnoitora and we see him cry for his master when Nnoitora is cut down. We see Nnoitora's panic when Zaraki shows up. Nnoitora is also visibly angry when Tesra is cut down. And a wierd relationship between these two would make sense as well because they are such opposites of one anothwr. Nnoitora also would never harbour feeling for a female just because of his dichotomy. His hatred for women is understandable when you realize... yikes... male mantises get kinda destroyed. Hope this helps :3 Oh and p.s. Nnoitora stalks his prey b4 killing them just like a mantis. After Ichigo fought Grimmjow, Nnoitora finally popped out and was like.... erm... i know how you fight ive been watching you. Mantises also like sneak attacking people, that's why he snuck up on Nel, cuz that's what a mantis would.

The thing that's so hype is the fact that Kenpachi doesn't have Bankai and is still this strong. That's why getting Bankai right here would have honestly been lackluster.

"teleport" technique is sonido (a hollow technique) Shinigami = shunpo Quincy = Hirenkyaku these appear as teleporting but in reality they are just hyperspeed movements. Also the ability Nnoitra was saying tesla should have used was pesquisa. its basically just using one's (hollow specific) spirit power to sense out an opponent. Tosen uses the shinigami equivalent to move around while also being blind.

I agree, Bleach by far has the best OST of any anime. Not even close IMO. And I was lucky enough to have Bleach be my first anime way back in the day when Adult Swim first started bringing over the anime to US tv. Then I was hooked and started watching all the new episodes until it died out. So happy they are bringing it back for the final arc.

The animal that Nnoitra signifies is the praying mantis (hence Santa Teresa). His sexism is in relation to the mating ritual that praying mantises have. The female praying mantis cannibalizes the male one after intercourse, eating its head; indirectly his comments about how he doesn’t like females fighting (especially ones that overpower him) is a reference and commentary on how male praying mantises’ only worth in life is sacrificing themselves for the sake of offspring being born meanwhile females get to beat them, eat them and continue living onwards. This isn’t a good enough reason for him to be sexist, but nonetheless it’s a characteristic that was intentionally integrated in his character.

Kenpachi is easily one of the top 5 strongest captains in Bleach he could defeat most people but because of his nature of playing with his opponents for the enjoy he might come off as less stronger than some captain also no spoilers but there is another reason he can't fight a full strength

No spoiler here, but in regards to the top 3 espada, it is kind of fluid. There is the numbers given to them by Aizen, but fans argue who is the strongest and the top 10 list changes quite a bit based on who you ask. Some espada abilities are super OP in certain situations that would put them at the top of the list. In other words, Most of the top 5 could be interchangeable depending on the scenario IMO. A kinda SPOILER point, that isn't very much of a spoiler but more of an indicator of things in Ichigo's bankai. I can't remember when it is revealed about this, but Ichigo's bankai shows how much strength/stamina he has left based off of how much of his bankai cloak is on him. So if he still has a full cloak, he is good to go, unless of course he is just completely overwhelmed
