Thats from the same ova. Just previous to getting tuberculosis and dying. Its not replacing it, its supposed to be before.

@@Nameless_Night if it makes you feel better the old manga goes until this scene, and the illness thing is from the ova which goes a bit further just to close the story of Tomoe/kaoru/kenshin/kenshi. Tho in the current new manga he is still dying for using the techniques that strain his body too much. So at the end of the day he will die young
