The fact that intentional fouling is an integral aspect of strategy in basketball, disqualifies it as a top tier sport. Insitute a 4 or point line if you want to allow for late game comebacks. Make 2 point fouls worth 3 shots, 4 shots for 3 pointers. Then cut back on ticky tack foul calls. Would be a much more watchable sport and eliminate free throw fests at end of game.

I remember playing intramural basketball in high school. My class was undefeated and a lock to win the championship. In our last game; the student-referee called a foul on a senior in my class. He didn’t like it and started yelling and cursing at the referee. He called a couple of technical fouls on him and ejected him. That meant an automatic forfeit for our team. It also meant we were ineligible for the playoffs. Our season ended because of him. Nobody spoke to him the rest of the school year. I’m 61 years old now and I’ll always remember that Peter Bailey costed us a championship.

This happened in an NCAA tournament game between Vanderbilt and Northwestern in 2017 - Vanderbilt had just scored to go up by 1 with something like 14 seconds remaining and they fouled on the inbounds, thinking they were down 1 instead of up 1. Just like here, the Northwestern player made both FT's to decide the game.
