I was at this B&H final and, as a Kent supporter, I thought we had this game in the bag after restricting Somerset to 193. How wrong I was! The two stumpings by Trevor Gard made the difference on the day. Fine work by him.

I haven't seen this match for many years but one thing that always stuck in my mind was the Ellison incident when the ball hit him on the knee. I was an Essex junior member at the time and went to the 2nd round match at Chelmsford v Kent , who scored 274/9 and Essex were cruising to victory with Gooch scoring 122, but they dramatically collapsed and lost by 4 runs. Kent went on to reach the final. 4 days later Essex played Middx in the B and H final and did the same thing when Middx scored a paltry 196 and Essex were 127-1 when Gooch smashed the quicks everywhere in a quick fire 46 (when he was out Essex were 79-1 off 11.4 overs). I went to the final at lords and couldn't believe they lost 2 games in 4 days by collapsing twice.

Kent's quite shocking 'game management' here shows how much the one-day game has moved on. To the point where 'game management' is now sports jargon for playing with common sense. 60 overs is an absolute eternity to get under 200, yet everyone's getting out giving it the kitchen sink. Maddening.

Different era, different times. One day cricket has moved on and changed but game management in Test cricket has reduced in quality.
