In this video, I take you line-by-line through my performance of Numb, and show you how to get many of the sounds you need to perform this song yourself.
How To Sing Numb - Linkin Park - Chester Bennington
When people think of the band Linkin Park, songs like "Numb" come to mind.
Chester Bennington and the band had an extraordinarily unique sound.
In a similar fashion to what Evanescence did, combining rap and rock, Linkin Park took it to a whole new level.
But it didn't stop there. Chester with a very unassuming soft "boy like" melodic voice, could morph that voice into a ferocious growling monster. In fact he is one of the few people that set the stage for this style of singing to gain popularity.
In this video I wanted to demonstrate Chester's amazing contrast between these two different voice types and how they could be sung safely and carefully to be reduplicatable time and time again.
I hope you find this video inspiring and informative as you continue on your journey for great singing :-)

It’s crazy how knowledgeable you are when it comes to all the techniques of vocals you are such an unbelievable singer and guitar player which But what I like the most to be honest is your personality it’s genuine humble nothing turns me off more than arrogance. I’m so happy for your success you deserve it. So blessed to be able to do what you love. This was meant for you.

The way you explained the lyrics and how Bennington delivered them makes perfect sense as to how he was able to draw that adolescent fan base . I was a Heavy Metal Hardcore Kid . However now I completely understand it . Also you're right many singers focus very much on ability rather than as you said " tell the story " . Even though his stuff isn't really easy to hack at all .

Came here as my band and I want to add this to our set list. I’ve learned so much already just during the video - I can’t get the last “less like you” just yet, but there is no way I could have got that far without this! I had no clue, I just get up and sing but this sort of stuff is so valuable! I had no idea. Truly lost a legend when we lost Chester 😢

I definitely heard alot of "na nana boo boo" style vocals in the 90s & early 2000s especially in pop punk lol. Many sharp observations...I like the idea of singing like a lion. Thanks!

Master Jedi Tamplin, every time I think I've come a long way, I see your KZbin videos and realize how much further I need to go. The good news is this video showed me something more. I no longer see singing as an obstacle to advancement, but rather a necessary key to open musical doors to free myself of limitations. If I could sing like you, I could sing whatever I wanted. Thank you so much for this lesson. No, really. My eyes are pretty wide now.

Let me tell y’all something about this song. The lyrics are an absolute masterpiece. I hate to come back to a video and keep harping. These words in this song are more than a masterpiece. The way he sang it was great and yes he had long lines. He done magic here in taking you to his child like mind with his pitch and tone. Yes yes yes. But never forget the true magic in Chesters words here. That’s all lol

Yeah great explanation. I do so called FC screams and growls and other kinds of extreme vocals. And I kind of randomly discovered glottal compression as a possible source of distortion. It’s pretty dangerous if done with too much of air and projection unlike FC. Thanks for sharing really helpful advice on making things safer and longer

Ken my brother this video really helped me understand a few different concepts, because this is a song I've always sung. Not well mind you, but I did have these somewhat intact. Thank you so much. I can play guitar, or any string instrument I come into contact with. I'm learning to play piano and all of that. But, trying to learn to be a vocalist is much harder, because I know people can hear me as I'm learning. I don't care about it with instruments, especially because I'm usually not too bad with figuring them out. But, you have a thing about explaining singing at if it is playing an instrument, like playing electric guitar, and that really helps me understand. I never realized all of that carries over, but all it is is sound, right? I've always felt like learning to sing often takes either natural talent, extreme cockiness, or extreme unawareness. But, you've shown me you can learn in humility, making your way from the bottom to the top. I love you for it man. I need to put more effort into all of this. Just have so much going on and most of my practice time is at night.

These other coaches never actually sing any songs. It's relatively easy to eek out a line or two, that is not an example. It's another thing altogether to actually grade the quality of the voice on not only an entire song, but multiple songs in many styles with many students demonstrating themselves. This is the only true way to know if a method is actually working or not.

Ken! Are you sure he's doing the chorus on one breath? Check out the vocal isolation on it. Doesn't sound like it to me. Each line is bounced back and forth between different layers of vocals, and probably vocalists. If you check out his live performances, he's definitely taking breaths between each line. This song is indeed a grinder though. One of the toughest songs I have ever sung. Chester was amazing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eH7aqGCjbMh9pbs
