I sang professionally for 20 years and a lot of this came naturally to me at the time, but I stopped singing regularly, started smoking sadly, and my voice had been seemingly lost. But, after only one session with Ken Tamplin, I feel like I can not only get back to where I was in my late teens and early twenties, but probably be an even better vocalist now one year away from 50. I didn't see this coming! Praise God.

when I was a teen I could sing hard and in fact sang for a cover band and we played judas priest and psychotic waltz hitting note for note almost perfectly all the time even while smoking heavily. now in my 40s, I couldn't even hit those high sustained notes anymore even though I still sing regularly in my spare time when my children and wife are out. I'm physically fit like Ken Tamplin, no longer smoke and I seldom drink alcohol but the drive is no longer there. must be a youth thing that your blood is boiling all the time and wanna go wild without a care in your body.

As lead guitarist in my band I am always encouraged to help out with backing vocals as our lead singer can hear something that I obviously can't. I've also had 'fans' say I can sing too but still haven't taken the leap. Your videos are really motivating me to really learn to sing, just like I learnt to play guitar.

My first tip to amateur singers is: Warm up! Just that alone will get you from a lousy useless voice, to something much more hopeful. It's really quite amazing and very few amateur singers know about it. We do a lot of karaoke and people will come up and ask "I have trouble, how can I sing like that", and that's the first thing I ask back. "Are you warm when you sing?" and they'll go "huh?". Warm up the voice before singing.

When I get in that place of fear and anxiety, which I still do at times. I remind myself of the lesson I learned while watching turtles. They can only move forward when they're willing to stick their neck out. And then about how, by my risking sticking out, I've now been able to experience my music bringing joy to others. To see their inner light shine, as smiles fill their faces, because I've been somehow able to touch them in that moment. May not happen overnight, but well worth the journey to get there. If you have not already, I hope you get to experience this at least once in your life. But getting there will require sticking your neck out, stepping forward when you want to stay hidden away in your shell. Also, when starting out, spoken words, sudden sounds and movements from your audience, may distract you while you're trying to sing. Especially when already dealing with anxiety. I found that practicing in front of a TV, it's sounds and screen action competing with my singing, helped me learn to stay focused on the song I was singing, get past this challenge. Good luck. Enjoy your musical journey.

Following along with this video unlocked the notes I was having trouble with that I knew I could hit hard, I was choking myself up and not even realising it. I’m *just* getting started on my singing journey. I’m one of those that hates the sound of my own voice. I have friends who are pro recording artists/vocalists, and that’s also incredibly intimidating. But…I recorded 2 vids (both upped to my YT) for one of them to critique, and the kudos and positive feedback have been incredibly encouraging. I’ve rewatched the better of the two vids I recorded about 50 times, and I’m starting to *accept* my vocal tones…don’t like my voice yet, but starting to not hate it. Picking up KTVA 2.0 this week, after I get a pre-sales question answered. Hopeful, and excited. Up the irons!

Unaware of my disability related to motor controls in the brain, when I was a kid my mistake was to give up hope on any voice training at all. Now that I'm older, I realized, it could have been overcome. I studied music all the way into college, never training my voice. So now I'm trying to take some baby steps to get basic foundations so I can have a better voice singing as I play music. Thanks for all your videos and tips and knowlege on the voice.

As a baritone who always wanted to be tenor, it is helpful to learn some new exercises and techniques to help expand my range and give more vocal sustainability. In addition, your teaching style is very open and engaging. Thanks again !

Wow! That was fantastic. I was a singer as a kid, always in the choir. But when my voice changed I also changed schools and they did not have a choir. I lost how to control my voice, off pitch many times maybe even mostly. Now I am 63 and what I feel I do have is resonance, little bit of confidence and drive. I can see how this will help.

The control and strength I am acquiring from Your videos like this is so very appreciated , I've never actually had vocal lessons but have sung backgrounds in bands since late '80s. CLYDE HOLLY took it to a new level vocally for me when I met him and got hired (keyboard /back vox BILOXI band) in Biloxi Mississippi in 1995 when he relocated from L.A . I didn't think at age 51 that my vocals could suddenly drastically improve, thank you sir, these lessons you provide have reinspired me vocally and the improvements and understandings of my voice and singing in general are blowing my mind. I can only imagine the improvements that I will acquire after I join your local academy here--- THANK YOU Sir Ken! 🎹🙏

I had a couple wonderful vocal coaches back at McNally when they were around despite one of them didn’t do much singing himself. The other was a heavy smoker and while on pitch and melodic she was good, not great but she went through the vocal exercises perfectly and it was life changing. She trained me just over two octaves and I could’ve probably gone further. I was a Tenor just scraping into alto and sang Don’t Stop Believing. The hardest song I’ve ever worked through. Any tenor ought to understand this. She was the first person to tell me I had a beautiful voice and I immediately wanted to take her home, lol. Joking aside similar techniques to yours and you’ve reignited my desire to bring back that voice. Thanks Ken.

Thank you for making this. Every other video is like 5 min long and just tries to sell a course. Even in real life, I’ve asked vocalist friends for help and they don’t really explain anything or try and *really* help. This is great!

I'm genuinely impressed by the efficacy of these warm ups . I HAD been struggling to sing "Simple Man" (the shinedown version) For a while now and after following along with this, let me just say WOW 👌🏻. I've watched and tried 100's if not thousands of videos/techniques over the past 5 years , and sure they definitely helped to improve my singing. But my God this 30 min video just blows everything else out of the water by miles! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING !!! -Shea Matthew

I sang for my band for about a decade however, I haven't been on stage or literally sang a full song in the last 3 years. Now it feels like I have lost my voice, can't hit those scales anymore, no breathing stamina. I am left with hoarseness, frustration and vocal stress. Thanks for reminding me of the basics..time to hit the vocal gym back.

Hello Ken! I have played guitar for several years but I've never felt good about my voice, so I have never sang. After watching this video and doing the exercises you did, I can feel a difference in my throat even when I'm not talking. Those are great exercises that truly showed progress within the same day. Every video I click on I feel like I'm watching somebody who's been turned into a puppet and it just doesn't connect with me. I loved how you made an effort to connect and let us know about you right off the get go. This is the first step I'm making towards trying to sing and I wish you were here to thank. You explained everything so clear and it was fun in the process. I can't believe the difference I can feel in my voice just after 30 minutes! Thank you for everything you do and I will continue to watch your videos and learn. Would love to meet you one day!

At 25:25 the root note / low note you’re landing on at the end of the scales sounds so bad ass. Landing in that low note with the bravado wave and grungy in it. I’d like to hear you sing Fade by stain. You’ve got it figured out my guy. Hell of a singer and even better teacher.

I've played bass and guitar in 4 bands over the last thirty years and never sang. I mean, I tried, my brother (keys) and our drummer took me aside and tried to teach me what they knew but it just didn't stick. They were both backup/harmony singers in the bands and were awesome but I just couldn't keep the pitch or the breath. This one simple video has me (in three listens) better than I ever thought I could be just because it's so simple and straight forward. I'll be back for more as time permits. I'm not in a band anymore but I still play and write music for myself and singing would be an awesome addition. Thanks so much for this video lesson, Ken. Oh, as for the lip drill, there's a Green day video documentary with Billy Joe Armstrong walking around doing it.

Appreciate you Ken! Just starting from scratch with your classes! I used to sing in 2nd-5th grades and sang throughout my life in church choir and than at work at several festivals. Over the years, I have found a desire to unlearn and relearn my vocal skills as I have aged 😅. I love to Karaoke 🎤 and do that a bit more consistently over the past two years. I have karaoked at many different cities at awesome pubs, clubs and taverns where there happens to be a professional DJ. I also sang with a live rock band this year in Atlanta and got a taste of my range. (Wichita, Atlanta, Memphis, Philly, Nashville, Nola, Orlando) happen to be my favorite singing spots so far. I have also been “smuling” with folks around the world and found that exhilarating, just from the experience itself. I am looking to watch your YT videos and continue to learn and grow through your channel. Just came back from watching Judas Priest and Queensryche in concert at Southaven, MS and I must say (Rob Halford, Geoff Tate, Todd La Torre, Bruce Dickinson, Lajon Witherspoon, Dave Mustaine, David Coverdale) are my all time favorite vocal singers.

I havnt tried to sing properly since I was in choir as a kid. I've attempted to learn from other tutorials but wasn't successful. My voice would crack and pop it's pretty deep voice now that im 32 lol. The excercises where so easy to follow and your explanation was amazing I followed along and noticed a change even during this video less cracks as I focused on the support and tightening the stomach as I came to the end of the tune. Thank you so much ill definetly be practising these consistently moving forward and I look forward to checking out your courses. Thank you so much you're an absoulate legend!

I taught myself. I still got a long ways to go. I practiced in secret. Quietly humming to the notes on my guitar for about a year before I opened my mouth and sang do, re, mi, etc😆 Then 2 years after that, I made a couple videos of me doing "In The Pines". Then I got cocky and hurt my vocals doing "Like A Stone". But I could hit that G4. Now I'm healing. I need help for sure😆
