There is a young singer who a lot of people haven't heard because she doesn't sing pop and she doesn't use auto-tune. It's Jackie Evancho. She's had an absolutely beautiful voice since she exploded on the scene in 2010 at the age of 10. She began as a classical singer and has now branched out into a little pop but also Broadway music.

I remember pounding it out in a rehearsal studio in the late 80's. We had a codex that you would not record stuff you could not pull off live. We were teens at the time so it was a little black and white thinking as studio is a different beast from live but the ethics were spot on. These days artists live goes through the hands of 3 Pro Tools engineers doing live edits. Or lead vocals is only on track. I don't need a singer to dance and jump around as an excuse of not singing live. Please take your vocal and throw down hard. That's something I respect. Cheers, Ken, you are spot on.

Some of these performances have pitch correction, aka "processing" lol!
@The_Buff_Guy5 жыл бұрын
Processing includes many things (EQ, compression, delay, verb, pitch correction aka auto tune etc). Processing is perfectly fine as long as Pitch correction is not used. Auto tune is NEVER necessary and should be abolished entirely. All it does is make the music boring and less enjoyable to Listen to. It’s become a crutch.

I would love to hear these singers today sing the old standards the way they did in the 40s. I listen to the 40s channel on the sat radio, hear some of the lesser known recordings from those days and the singers simply nail it without any bells or whistles and no multi-tracking either, all playing/singing at the same time. I do understand that autotune does create its own kind of effect which is cool, but I also like an unprocessed sound.

I've never used auto-tune on my vocals. I would NEVER use it live, but I can see how it could be useful in the studio. Say you nail a very emotional part & it's all perfect, but one syllable is a little flat. Correct that one syllable & keep the intensity of the take. Relying on auto-tune is just covering up a lack of talent. I don't like that at all.

Reinhold Mack said himself some years back that one thing he loved about working with Freddie Mercury and A “few” other good vocalists was that it made his job not so stressful and more enjoyable. He said that these record labels were sending artists to him that couldn’t sing worth a damn, & his job was to make them sound good. Selena Gomez is awesome and considering that she’s working with lupus as well, I know personally that is extremely hard! I don’t know how she does it

Auto-Tune is what I think is killing music. I like the natural sound of someone's voice. I like old-school music when they didn't have Auto-Tune. Auto-Tune allows anyone to sing where you don't have to have a great voice and be a great singer which I think makes for Crappy music. I don't think anyone should be able to sing unless you have a good voice and you can actually sing.

Even some of the ones who don't use auto-tune, they just sound so similar and generic to me. I really miss the the older music (70's & some 80's, which had originality, and you knew who was singing. No one was copying anyone else, nor did they sound like anyone else. Although in the 80's it seemed like the new wave bands started to copy each other, after a while. Same with some of the hair metal bands in the later 80's. This group of females are so similar to each other in sound. It reminds me of the 1960's Motown females that also started to sound the same after a few years. No originality here...

@@Deborahtunes Glam bands sounded alike because they all shared similar singing style, but there was no autotune back then, it took a lot of talent and technique to belt out the high notes they were doing. Also, I could differentiate between Cinderella, G&R, Skid Row vocals, etc...
