I've never claimed to be a vocal coach, I don't have a vocal course for people to buy. Although I do sing, I've never mimed live or used pitch correction or auto-tune. Lastly, music is not a competition, if it were then there would be a music 'Champion of the World'. I think you're missing the whole point of the artform, integrity and objectivity. I have 45 years in live audio, 2/3 of that working with "artists you've heard of". I'm still working and I signed NDAs so I won't mention names, but these self-annointed golden ears comments Fil featured in this video have no f'in clue about how many of their favorite artists, bands, and performers make use of playback in performances. One band, a quartet, had 96 inputs - half from live sources on the stage and the other 48 were from ProTools or Ableton. The band got the live inputs to their IEMs and the audience heard 98% tracks. Many rappers are lip-syncing, too. The mics are hot so the hype and shoutouts are real, but most of the actual "song" is either the studio vocal or an edit of the studio vocal with some live components; soloing up the live mics in headphones, I can hear the performers moving, breathing, and maybe rapping along at a *very* low level until a shout out comes along. A popular male country singer has a bad alcohol habit and can't utter a coherent sentence by the time he's on stage but his "sung" vocals are flawless; is it magic or an illusion? Another singer who has been on one of the contest TV shows lip syncs the last half (more or less) of his live show for the same reason - he's getting intoxicated on stage and develops both pitch and timing problems. There are vocal tuning plug ins for digital mixing consoles that will work fast enough to be used live, and one of the most popular English-speaking performers has it applied to all non-spoken parts of the vocal performance, along with a dynamics and EQ processing chain that would have been low/mid-five figure$ back when everything was separate analog boxes. Ultimately I work for the artist or someone they have hired for technical and artistic supervision. With some I get lots of artistic direction and discretion, with others there is lots of direction and little room to make changes of any sort (kind of like in theatre) after the tour starts. Some performers seem comforted by the technologies, some need the technologies to make them acceptable, live, others eschew most of it. My personal choice to start out organically and hear what the band or artist is actually doing, maybe apply a little reverb to put some air around it, and hear where their performance of that song, that day, takes us. I like the old ways of letting the art and magic happen on stage, and that my primary job is to share those things to everyone who showed up, artist-willing.
@ChrisM541Ай бұрын
Well said! Miming anywhere, especially at a 'live' concert is about as low as it gets for any Art, and yes, it is widespread today...very, very widespread. Additionally, the near 100% abuse of tuning software (primarily Melodyne) has, today, destroyed 'pop' music as an Art form, and it's extreme abuse is widespread in many other genres. We all remember, over 20 years ago, when Melodyne came out and alarm bels were immediately raised when we saw it so damn easily move data up/down in pitch, left/right to manipulate phrasing, increase/reduce vibrato, lengthen/shorten phrases, etc etc. Little wonder we are where we are today. Kids have, for over 20 years, been completely indoctrinated into accepting computer-perfected, dehumanized audio excrement. Such a damn shame, and a truly damning indictment on the music industry and government music/culture bodies that they continue to bury their heads in the sand.

@@ChrisM541I remember working local crew for a medium sized band in the early 80s. I was helping the sound engineer and was looking over his effects rack. I worked as Mixer/sound guy and grunt labor for a local rock band. Broke as hell we were lucky to have PA at all. Eager to learn I asked him to explain his vocal chain. I recognized reverb, delay and compression but was stumped by a Eventide Harmonizer. So he explained it some and demonstrated some. Color me stunned. My dumb redneck ass was being schooled. While well out of our price range, I really saw the endless possibilities. Now this effect is totally accepted, made cheap as a plug in for the world to use. Is it dishonest? I can't answer that, especially when applied to vocals. I was also challenged ethically when working a Hall and Oats show in the mid 80s. Under the stage were several keyboards where a guy was steady busy swapping 8 inch floppy disks between songs. Essentially he was playing the songs not the people on stage. Being the first time I saw this I lost all respect for the band. Sadly it only got worse over the years. Some like the Edge were totally upfront about their use of technology. But it was still him playing his instrument. Loved the Joshua Tree and Unforgettable Fire shows I was lucky enough to work. Then came Autotune and similar devices like the Melodyne. Cher as an effect. No problem. But to hide the fact you can't hit pitch with a shotgun? Absurdly dishonest. It's gotten to the point you can't trust a vocal. Unless it's off pitch, I guess. But I would always take the honest vocal even with imperfections over the corrected. Sure if she is up there dancing her ass off I expect it to be lip synced. No human could do it. It's a performance. But don't lie to me standing in front of a mic. So I guess I will keep watching bar bands playing the blues. At least I know it's a human

Everything effects your singing voice: tiredness, sickness, excitedness, your mood that day, what you ate, how hydrated you are, even crowd reaction will change things in the way the singer sounds. @@Durwood71This isn't in defence of him (Ken), but it is a comment on your criticism of him. If you take vocal lessons regularly, and you learn to sing properly with good technique, it is entirely reasonable to expect that you can maintain your vocal ability, because in learning to sing properly you are essentially training muscles. In Ken's case (and as Fil says) he can sing, and his channel output is that of someone who is a professional, so it's reasonable to expect that his vocals haven't altered much. If you're someone like me, starting as a largely untrained amateur, it's reasonable to expect the vocal would improve over time even if you're older, as mine has (improved lower register and improved connection between registers particularly). The only 'snake oil' would be to suggest that a vocal will be 100% accurate 100% of the time, so yes it's reasonable to criticise that aspect, but overall, not so much.

@@mandowarrior123 Wrong. A "correct guess" would, in fact, be "true" to any party that would be seeking recourse. So, you're creating a non-existent distinction. Lastly, re: slander, this is not a defense 'I "have reason to believe it is true." the only time such a defense would be relevant is with regard to proving Malice. Malice is not necessary to prove Negligence. In many jurisdictions that's all that is necessary for a successful judgement. If a defendant is relying on 'well gee I thought it was true when I said it'...that's not the standard. Anyway, hope that's helpful. It is a distinction with a difference.

Right before watching this video, I watched a Steve Perry interview where he was talking about the voice being a fickle instrument. Very insightful interview, and as a singer myself I agree with what he said about the voice having a personality all its own: one day it's great, the next it's off, the next it's better than ever, the next it is still laying in bed and refuses to cooperate at all. The singer is the instrument, and the singer is not a machine. It's disturbing that the music industry reduces a human being to a machine; that human beings are defending the dehumanizing of artists; and that artists willingly participate in many cases. Very disturbing. Fil, these analysis videos are golden.

Religion is naturally concerned with fakery, because it is based on fakery and lies itself, and anyone who exposes small lies is a danger because he might expose the big lies (like there being another world where a God judges men after their death...) They thrive on people being gullible and trusting tall tales more than their own senses.

Just watched an interesting video on a channel called 'Guitar Stuff Studio'. A British singing teacher, known as Lexi-the-Red, has found a section on one of Ken's videos where his lesson includes a section taken word-for-word from the book 'Singing for Dummies'. So we can add plagiarism to the already proven lip-syncing of vocals and miming of guitar playing. By the way, this teacher, Lexi, said that Singing for Dummies was actually a very good book, and probably better value at 20 pounds compared to the 800 dollars for Ken's course.

Liz Phair was performing on stage and my said to "she sounds our of tune." Yet when she sung 4 loud refrains singing "Why Can't I!" Each was identical in pitch volume, and annunciation. I closed my eyes just listening and it sounded "enhanced" or autotuned live. No data. Just my ear. In contrast, the Violent Femmes Gordon Gano was his usual charming and sometimes off key self. Beloved and real!
