How To Sing Like Ronnie James Dio - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
There are just a handful singers who have had a huge influence on me vocally and another name that definitely makes that list is Ronnie James Dio.
Though Ronnie apparently didn't have any formal training vocally, he still learned to implement many of the techniques I teach which I also will be sharing in this video.
Dio sings with big, long whole tones and it's his use of open throat technique that allows him to achieve his sound.
I'm going to break down how we can also use glottal compression and diaphragmatic support to be able to achieve the same longevity and stamina that Dio brings.
I'll be sharing with you some of my own performances along with two KTVA students: Gabriela and Sara as we all take on some Dio classics while I break down the techniques we use to get there.

I gotta be honest, I was not a heavy metal fan. Then one day I came across the live version he did of Mistreated. Then I realized just how much technique Dio has. It's amazing what a talent he had.

You nailed the over dramatic part of Dio, I remember him singing this one song with him holding a sword, slaying a dragon. I remember the crowd being completely quiet and confused. It was the 80ies and way over the top.

Definitely check him out! If you really want to appreciate him as a singer, start out looking at his early 60's career as a "crooner" with Ronnie & The Prophets, Ronnie & The Red Caps. Then move on to The Elves, Electric Elves, then Elf, then Rainbow, then Black Sabbath, then Dio. You can find it all here on YT.

Hi Ken. Dio had the talent of singing high notes and make it sound like it’s not as high. Mixing and it seems like several frequencies going on. I want to get a voice more like that. My voice is close to Bon Jovi but still he and other great singers got more nuances. Please, let me know how to dig into that. I guess you did but would be great on another video.

I think that Sara sounds amazing singing this song! I tend to be quite critical, which might explain why I have so few friends. But I love her tone and the dynamics of how she attacks the notes and then relaxes as she gets out of a phrase. I would love to see her song more Dio stuff. :)

To me, she is the most impressive of your students, because she is able to replicate the size and distortion of male singers. When I hear her sing Plant, Dio, or Johnson/Scott it is remarkable. I am killing myself at your course trying to connect that passagio lol (I have low voice). Interestingly, Zeppelin's Rock N Roll and Over the Hills, etc are easier to sing coz its all head voice and small at that. For songs like The Show Must Go On or We are the Champions with a very broad range within the song, it may as well be an alien singing it, and similar with Dio. I watched a video, and Ann Boleyn even did a 'Dio move', where RJD would bend his knees slightly, microphone in one hand, and place his other hand on his hip? She did that in the video :)
