14:18 As I study vocal structure and placement of vowels in dense or thin registers of the voice, in my opinion Dio is a master of the modern open throat technique at a very advanced level, he sings with a lot of resistance, control and a high level of hyperglottal compression and In this context, he is clearly capable of singing in a full chest voice at many times on very high notes( which is very rare for many singers and he does this most of the time and naturally) and at the same time he also always takes turns, with a powerful full-chest mixed voice mainly in throat vocal distortions; I know how to differentiate between chest voice and mixed voice very easily, it's very simple, when you sing in chest voice the A, E, I, O and U need to be completely open and when you connect your chest voice with the in head , you notice that the sound of your vowels is clearly closing little by little as you increase the percentage of head voice but Dio is completely different, he manages to keep the vowels completely open on many occasions in extremely high notes and this it is extremely unlikely to do in a mixed voice, where the vowels gradually close as you raise your voice; Dio, in my opinion, has the best register of chest voice I've ever heard.

I am not an expert like you guys but to me it looks like Dio also keeps his mouth always wide open and dynamically modulates the sound constantly changing the shape of his mouth. Curious to know what you think?
@luamoliveira3467
@luamoliveira3467 9 ай бұрын
@@bondandlearn In fact, he used this oval-shaped embouchure a lot, widely used by opera singers when and in this context he still sang in the band Rainbow, and as the years passed he managed to further develop the muscular structure of his central voice mechanism and became even better in terms of throat dominance and especially the embouchure dominance, Ronnie sang in a relaxed way and without any facial and throat muscle tension, so in this way he didn't open his embouchure too much like many singers do and kept the shape of his mouth half open but maintaining a really very open throat sound, thus avoiding any type of muscular friction in the long term.

You couldn’t have timed this more perfectly! I’m a baritone whose vocal coach has been pushing me for a while to “sing like you speak” and has struggled to make higher chest voice notes sound less shouty. I’m working on Toto’s “Hold The Line” right now and I feel like I discovered the note weight concept in the phrase “love isn’t always on time” the other day. I’ve found that going into head voice sounds too thin and piercing except for the word ‘always’, so finding the breath support to get the beginning and end of the phrase is challenging, but between that moment and your video a light bulb is going off in my head knowing this is the path I should be exploring. Thanks, Chris!

Another great video! I actually discovered this while trying some of your tips. I used to go in too heavy all the time, but now I try to start every vocal session in pure head voice. The tip I use is cat sounds - pure head voice. Then I discovered, in order to sing Dio, never go in too heavy, it’s impossible. Cat Dio is already halfway there.

Good video. Two awesome singers to showcase; Dio has inspired many people, and Justin has such an amazing voice. Breath control is a key part of what they do. In order to gain that sort of control, I started to walk and sing from the diaphragm back in 2019. Tough going in the beginning, but it was worth it for the breath control I have. It truly is the Mind over the matter.

First train to equalize your chest voice strength and headvoice strength. Might take a while to build the necessary muscles. Once you’ve reached that balance in strength you can start to try connecting both registers by trying out which vowel enables you to flawlessly close the gap. Breath support, sing light and don’t allow air to create pressure coming from on your vocal cords. So: muscle equality, vowel training,sing light, no air pressure from belly

This is really good insight that I've been looking for and couldn't quite put my finger on for a while. Not sure how useful it is for other people, but I've found using a phrase or song done by someone with a very different voice (particularly opposite gender) is useful for playing with the weight, delivery, pitch to my sound. Since its near impossible to match that sound, i find it a lot easier to tweak my approach to it because I'm less stuck on that exact sound being replicated.

Always appreciate your passion towards learning as well as teaching singing! I find it particulary interesting to compare with the 'school' of singing I'm being taught by a voice teacher. In Complete Vocal Technique I believe what you call vocalweight is called 'tonecolor' - that being a spectrum between light and dark (heavy). On second thought the 'weight' you showcase here also has to do with added effects. Hm!

And he really is singing clearly in chest voice most of the time, excellent singing experts like Ken Tanplin or lyrical singing teacher Zach Ansley defend the same idea; He is largely singing with the vowels completely open, which is practically impossible to maintain within a mixed voice and there is no vocal pedagogy that proves otherwise, when his voice enters the mixed voice, the vowels gradually close the higher you rise above the passage.

@@luamoliveira3467 hi my Dio friend, nice to meet you in a comments again, I remember you :) The thing I've learned from my vocal coach and others is that you can use a different percentage of your chest voice in your mixt and make it sound very powerful. It comes from a big closure area of the vocal cords. Looks like Dio was doing this. Is it 100% the chest voice or he was using 89 or 92% of his vocal cords sometimes - doesn't matter 😀
@luamoliveira3467
@luamoliveira3467 5 ай бұрын
@@MarislavaBermann Very well scored, exactly what you mentioned, Dio's voice is often a mystery, because he is perhaps the only singer who can keep the vowels completely open in the fifth octave, I've analyzed so many singers and I don't know any who actually do that like him. As you say, Dio often makes alternations with his voice and even because he is a great manipulator of his vocal instrument and this ends up confusing people, because for the most part he is singing clearly with full chest voice and at certain moments you notice that he makes alternations within the mix with a little more head voice and varying with a percentage of 90 to 95% chest voice, as you mention very well, and you feel that his voice gets deeper at certain moments and you notice this, for example, like in some versions he made of Last in line and where sometimes when he holds that A4 at the beginning of the song, his voice sounds different, becoming more open or deeper at times and this shows that he usually alternate between a clear chest voice and a full chest mix.

Within what I studied about vocal anatomy and physiology, Ronnie James Dio, for most of his career, developed great motor strength due to a great hardening of his muscular structure with the support of his fantastic diaphragmatic support, which increased a formidable resistance with high levels of glottal compression, where he was able to maintain his voice in the oropharyngeal register of full chest voice, where the vowels are fully open and there is no change in texture in the resonance, is a question of structural mechanics and beyond genetic physiology as a whole, he sang with a full chest voice most of the time and at certain moments varying with a very developed mixed chest voice but naturally and without any muscular tension or resistance to his breathing.

I found my thin mixed voice almost a year ago. after time i started using my full mixed voice almost effortlessly. when i started watching Chris i really started doing it effortlessly. right now im practicing amount of weights i put. sometimes it's difficult to keep the mid volumed mixed voice's texture when actually singing with lyrics. but it's necessary to try practicing different vowels first, like Chris said near the end of this golden video. adjusting a vocal posture (character sound), having a balance between support and amount of air you let out - all is important to learn while experimenting to have the most control of the voice. there was a point when i could sing with the lyrics even in a mid volumed mixed voice but right now im singing less due to having a different place i live in compared to before so i can't add more volume as much since now i'm not often alone with myself

Great video I was just noticing that about RJD too. Children of the sea from a distance sounds like he is belting B4 , but really he is swelling into B4 and dropping to get the weighted sound . DIO often has a growel in the lower register and is very clean on the top His cry voice is disguised unlike tate or halford who often Are animated with the technique you could say with halford on a song such as bloodstone ,(cry voice) how much longer will it take for the world to see. Then bright forward mix dropping to an ahh vowel blood stone

I find that (even when I started vocals) most people tend to NOT separate the vocals from the production values added to the content they ingest. It's why people don't sound like their fav artists when singing along in their cars. Most people don't know mixing/mastering and the amount of processing that goes into making an artist sound "iconic" in the first place. Cornell was amazing live but a whole lot of artists are NOT so amazing without processing caked on like makeup.

I've worked with lots of musicians over the last twenty years and most of them say that the "road" (touring) was just brutal on them. I made the decision early on that I didn't want that kind of traveling, potentially nomadic lifestyle...
