Kent, i have to create four second loops and run them a hundred times to learn from you videos, but that has more to do with my level of understanding and everytime there i watch, i learn a new way to apply what you teach ... you have been the greatest teacher for me and i am sure many like me. Love and respect for you to devote time to share from your bottomless pit of knowledge.

Excellent explanations of chord structure for beginners Kent. This is a really essential video for understanding how to construct chords, and I recommend it to everyone beginning jazz, or for that matter ANY type of piano playing. Keep up the great work Kent, you really are making some fantastic videos. Thank you.

Hey Kent! Thanks so much for making these videos! I'm going to audition for my high school's jazz band next year (I'll be a freshman) for the piano. Originally I'm classically trained and have no idea about anything jazz piano, but because of you it's all making sense to me now! Thanks so much!

There’s lots of them out there, many are good, but Kent’s the best because he gets to the point with little blah blah blah, and his explanations are very clear! Yeah Kent!

All of your videos are gold. They answer a lot of questions I had about theory. I'm curious though, towards the end of this video it says "Next Video: 6th Chords, Sus 4 and augmented chords" but I can't seem to find that in the playlists. Can you link it please?
@KentHewittpiano888 жыл бұрын
Sorry I probably forgot and went on to something that I thought was more important or interesting. I could still do a video on those chords if it would be helpful. Sorry... my videos tend to be more geared to intermediate and advanced players. Here's my easier videos: kzbin.info/aero/PLFuMibnl_h5aTaUnQpBtsc6p1ZsLsxagq

I just found this channel. Love the video about the diminished scale. Do you have a video for best voicing to start with... block, open, rootless,? I am a guitar player, but would like to learn more piano skills.

I used to read the John Mehegan books on jazz piano . "chords of less than a seventh are inadequate for jazz," he would say . Taking the five you've shown and multiplying by 12 , he called jazz harmony was a sixty chord system . It's a good anaylsis but was kind of overwhelming :) great video . You refer to closed position , the first positions a student would likely learn , as block chords ? Whether root position or otherwise ?
@KentHewittpiano888 жыл бұрын
I'm scanning and found you. Yes...the right hand should first learn to play the melody and the left hand supports the melody with block chords, and some easy inversions.... and then various inversions that use good "voice leading"...or what I like to call "economy of motion". .

Great tutorial Kent! what jazz tunes would you recommend to start learning for a newbie?
@KentHewittpiano888 жыл бұрын
Great question...I need to make up a list...of course... that's subjective, but a few great tunes are: Summertime, Autumn Leaves, Blue Bossa, All The Things You Are, Take The A Train, S' Wonderful, Night and Day, Blue Monk, Satin Doll, etc...etc...etc.Check out my Great Standards list.
