Part 9: COPYRIGHT AND OWNERSHIP | How to Lecture in Higher Education

Copyright and Ownership:
I use my computer, software, and microphone to record and edit at home. The finished videos are uploaded, archived, and shared via my educational KZbin channel. Some videos are open to the public, and others are only visible to those with the video's link. I distribute the links to my students via the password-protected course website or mail. My overall goal is to separate work from private, and it should always be clear that I own the copyright and the recordings.
I'm not a lawyer, and things may differ at your institution, but this is how I do things. There are a multitude of solutions and a variety of options for recording and sharing lectures. You'll have to do what's best for you. Critical success factors are the level of technical support you can get in your department, how advanced the recordings need to be, and so on.
If you should decide to try making your own educational videos, which I encourage, my advice is to start small. Your first three videos, for example, should be for your eyes, no more than 5 minutes each, and only cover very narrow and focused topics. I argue that taking small steps is essential when learning something as complex as recording and editing an educational video.
