I spend days making a geodesic tent shelter out of cardboard and take it to the woods to try it out in heavy wind & rain, bad weather winter camping.

I worked at a cardboard factory here in the states and we made wax-coated cardboard for bakeries. The sheets were very big and could easily be cut into your triangles. Possibly using duct tape or electricians tape would also help with the seams. Good luck next time. 👍

I'd argue it was a massive fail since they already make boxes that are strong enough to hold a couple hundred pounds of metal car parts. Plus, you only need a couple long pieces of tape. Yes, it indeed failed horribly, but not because he built it poorly. HE failed because cardboard boxes been around for what? A hundred years at least?

I built a play house for my son out of heavy triwalled cardboard boxes years ago. They were waxed cardboard and I retreated the seams with melted candle wax. It lasted for many months outside thru rain and even snow... And didn't cost me a dime to build seeing I got the boxes from trash at my job and the wax from old candles..

Thanks for the video. Trip to Annapolis Naval Academy: I was an assistant scoutmaster. Our troop had old Eureka Timberline TL-2 tents. I remember one time our troop was scheduled to go camping on a weekend that was going to have heavy rains. We bought heavy thick clear plastic and cut pieces that were 1 foot larger in both directions than the floor of the tents. After setting up the tents we put the plastic inside the tents with the edge goin up the inside wall. It rained so hard that there were streams of water running through our camping area, but the plastic worked! We were at a campsite owned by Annapolis Naval Academy. The facility was across the river from the campus and was for support staff. We were allowed to use the gym, the mess hall there and had a guided tour of the Academy one day of the weekend. We had a great time!

I think this was a GREAT attempt. The tape was a great idea. A simple and cheap waterproofer is wax. Get a bar of wax that has a flat edge and rub it on the cardboard to coat and waterproof the surface. You don't even have to wait for it to dry. You'd have to do it after taping, though. This was an exciting episode. It's what us adventurers live for.

I had a similar thought... or if instead of cardboard, the dome was made of wooden dowels or the like, strictly as a means to support a tarp or plastic sheeting. Wouldn't help so much with the wind noise or insulation, but as you say, much better against rain,
@cillyhoney1892
@cillyhoney1892 4 ай бұрын
@@CSGraves Yeah I think the cardboard is worth it just for the insulation factor alone. It's worth it to be able to heat the space with his propane space heater. Plastic alone on a dowel frame wouldn't hold the heat. Also the rain is deafening on plastic alone. You've effectively made a drum.

For us, it’s just the bread, meat, cheese, and optional, sautéed onions, ketchup/mayo. We have pickled cherry peppers as a side, if you need a palate cleanser after a few bites. I will admit, it did look tasty. Unfortunate for the tent. As always, great video. Cheers Andy!

Cool video. Before you switch materials altogether, please try a spray varnish or boot waterproofing grease on a few pieces first. If your goal is one long rainy night, either of those may get you there. But most serious outdoor tents now have a rain shield that sheds the water before it even hits the tent, so a light plastic tarp over top would do very well (not the goal, I know.) Good luck.

Hugely enjoyable effort Andy and not something I have seen been done before. The carpenter in me loves to sit and watch structures be created and the fact that it never worked has made you, me and by the looks of it lots and lots and your viewers scratch our heads and re-design our own solutions.

You did a lot of work and we appreciate it! As to surface sealing and seam sealing, if you were making a standard tent you would need to do both. It's still a cardboard structure when it has been weatherproofed. This has been a fascinating project. I also expected the geodesic dome to shed water much better than it did.

One should rarely be afraid of try new things. Not a failure. The concept was sound, you just need to tweak the materials. A rain fly would have helped, but probably still not enough. Maybe a little bit bigger for more comfort. A coat of polyurethane maybe? You gave it a go and that’s what’s important. Good job Andy.

I know this video is a few months old but thought I'd mention that there's a great little dome kit you can buy in the UK called build with hubs. It would be easy to construct something with wood sourced from your camp spot. Loved the video even if the outcome wasn't what you wanted!

Very brave of you using geometry for tent construction, you got the formula right. Me, i always used this formula and it never failed. The angle of the dangle is inversely proportional to the heat of the meat, provided that the maxis of the axis, and the gravity of the cavity, remain constant.😏

I think the dome tent is awesome!. About ten years ago I built half a 11 foot geodesic dome and put it on top of a 4 foot knee wall and covered it with plastic turning it into a greenhouse. it was a lot of work cutting the 2x4s to the proper angles and lengthes. It is still standing and we have used it int he winter to have fires. I would like to build a bigger one and cover it in to be a cottage at some point. We live in North eastern Ontario Canada. Awesome video thanks!

You really do make great videos. The preparation involved in this one must have been immense. After all your hard work and perseverance, you simply take the bad luck on the chin and move on. Your calm enthusiastic attitude is infectious to watch. Keep up the good work. Look forward to seeing your next cardboard tent design.

Applying the tape starting at the ground and overlapping up towards the top (like shingles) may have reduced or eliminated the rain water getting into the joints. There are more water resistant versions of cardboard coated with wax, plastic or even foil. Might be more suitable for a tent that needs to stand for more than a day or two. Duct tape is widely available and is purpose-made for sealing joints like that. Thanks for the experiment and the video. :-) Cold and rainy here in the Silicon Forest, Oregon.

It's amazing to see you do this. I live in a pretty windy place. I've had full tents be picked up of the ground and blown like a tumbleweed. Now I hammock camp 😅 I could never do this, so I thank you for allowing me to love vicariously through you. Keep doing what you do! In case you are wondering, I live in the Plains of Texas. The average wind speed here is 12 mph (7.5 kph) with gusts around 30 (48). Storms, when they blow in, double that.

Cool idea, this dome. Toss a paint drop cloth (1 or 2 mil) over it and Bob's your uncle. One thought on the heater, since it heats the space by radiating out, a small whisper fan mounted near the heater 'can' will push the heat away from the heater and supercharge the heat distribution. I use the same idea in a larger space with a radiant space heater at home. Keep up the great content.

That’s a shame it didn’t work. The cardboard soaked up the rain pretty fast. If it was colder and snowing instead, I think it would’ve been fine. You tried and that’s the point. It was fun watching. Thanks Andy!

Honestly I would like to steal this design and make my own and try it out in a desert camp out here in Arizona. It seems it holds heat well so nights won't be so cold but all the breaks in the tiles would allow it to breath during the day. Not all failures are failures. This could work in a different environment and honestly I liked your design over the festival tent you tried out. Dont give up, this is a good idea.

That was my exact thought: desert summer tent! Especially if you make it reflective or white on the outside, it would also be a great sun shelter.
