The Everly Brothers could do no wrong. I'm completely perplexed as to how they captured such an excellent recording of this with two acoustic guitars and exactly one microphone. The performance is God-like but the fact that someone committed it to tape for the ages is nearly as impressive.

Singing around one mic & “ self mixing” is how it was done back in the 40’s & 50’s. Singers & players really listened to each other very carefully which you can clearly see here. I have friends in a 5 piece Bluegrass band who sing trios & quartet harmonies, with 100% acoustic, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, lead/rythmn guitar & double bass. They move in & out with instruments, lean in for harmonies /chorus & out to allow the lead singer to shine through. All around one mic. Their “ balance” is sensational & they’ve been performing that way for over 25 years. It creates a wonderfully dynamic “show” & yes, boggles the minds of younger musicians so use to “ levels” & a ton of sound gear.

And familirs and siblings who sing together often have similaritiee in tone or timbre ( and accent) to blend and weave beautifully eg: Delmores, Louvins, The Brothers Gibb 😊

I recall seeing an interview with Waddy Wachtel. Waddy was a tour musician with the Everly Brothers for sometime. Waddy told a story of how he would cry every time they did this song. It affected him so deeply. I feel that way too.

From a concert in Australia. Guitar wizard Albert Lee said that this performance inspired him to become a musician. Look and listen. Two guys, two acoustic guitars, standing a good yard away from the single microphone, no effects. Sheer magic. It's included in the album "Songs our father taught us". Highly recommended.

Heart-stopping. Beautiful voices, perfect harmony, starting and stopping each phrase exactly together and physically beautiful. So adorable they way Phil followed his older brother. They needed only one mic because they were perfectly in sync, they operated as one voice, as they had since they were 8 and 6 years old. They whole family played music together professionally since that time and at home. We are lucky to have so many recordings of these angels. They changed the course of musical history. Every musical group in operation since 1960 learned how to sing harmony from listening to their records, including Simon & Garfunkel, the Beatles and every other group that attempted harmony.

I am 77 and have been performing solo and band gigs since the 60's - I played last Saturday. They were one of my big influences. When Phil died I performed "Cathy's Clown" with a friend as a tribute. It is on KZbin. I saw them live in UK in 1963 approx when they 'headlined' with Bo Diddly. The Stones were a support act.

Let some expert talk pitch or timbre or harmonics to explain the Everly Brothers. To me it's this: few people have the courage to sing their feelings honestly and with total conviction, just a few inches from someone else's face. That's the heartfelt quality which is so elusive yet so enduring about Don and Phil.
