Between the suppressor and the barrel length combined - the recoil should be VERY mitigated. Plus he's a tree-eater one of those, so one handing is a bit easier for him. Me? Bit of a fun fact in regards to suppressed revolvers - M1895 Nagant features unsual "gas-seal" system, in which the cylinder moves forward when the gun is cocked. This actually allowed it to be one of the few revolvers that managed to get succesfully surpressed.
@WaterZer0
@WaterZer0 Жыл бұрын
Also has the worst trigger in the history of firearms.
@Bacteriophagebs
@Bacteriophagebs Жыл бұрын
Also, the Nagant was made that way in an attempt to increase velocity, but experiments have shown that the cylinder gap has little to no effect on velocity. For example, GUNS magazine tested two revolvers and a semi-auto, all with 5-inch barrels, firing the same ammo, with the two revolvers having different sized gaps. All three velocity sets were in the same range. The revolver with the largest gap averaged 5 or 6 fps lower than the other two, but the ammo could vary by as much as 14 fps between shots from the same gun. There was no discernible difference between the revolver with the smaller gap and the semi-auto with no gap at all. Gas-operated guns also don't lose any velocity over bolt-actions with the same barrel length, of course.

The 1895 Nagant revolver tries to solve the gas gap problem by pushing the cylinder forward against the barrel as the round is fired, to close that space. It makes for a very suppressable revolver.
@crazyfvck

@benmcsweeney5501 True. And it also uses special ammo with a bullet that is recessed into the case. I believe the idea is that the case mouth will flare open upon firing, and it will seal even better against the forcing cone of the revolver.
@toomanyaccounts
@toomanyaccounts Жыл бұрын
it also has unique ammo with the bullet being entirely in the casing. the pushing occurs before the firing because just cocking pushes the cylinder and the primer is also covered. I have one with a custom can. Sounds like a cap gun

@@ethansmith9065 I can't really see anyone that already has a 500 magnum getting this unless they have a lot of money, but for anyone that doesn't already have one you can always use regular loads in this and take the suppressor off so it might be a good option to go with over the standard. Other than that it almost seems like a novelty, something they did just to see if it could be done more than anything else. Unless one really needs the extra power there's better options that offer even more noise suppression. The tighter cylinder gap is nice too.

A 99.98% of revolers made will always have blow by, unless it is a gascheck revolver like the Mosin Nagant 7.62 gas check revolver. So you could make one with a tiny cylinder gap, but be very sensitive to grit, fouling, and cylinder wear. A good example of how quiet a pistol caliber carbine efficiency could be is a Delile carbine. A 45 Acp. Pistol round carbine based on P 14 rifles with barrels , ported with an integrated suppressor, at Fireing it was supposedly very quiet no one could not hear it from 20 feet Way. The bolt cycling made more noise than the actual firing of the round.

There was a suppressed revolver that had a cylinder that would mechanically push forward and engage the barrel. The end of the barrel had a bevel on it and had a matched surface on the chambers. It would seal up and when you pulled the hammer it would pull back a cam that would let the cylinder pull back and rotate, then when the next chamber was aligned it would cam back out and seal the chamber.

There were actually plenty of attempts to make revolvers suppressible. Don't really remember the name of any prototype, but the general idea in many of those was to encase the cylinder to prevent gases from escaping and force them to go down the barrel. The reality was that in most cases, it made them too cumbersome and in general offered nothing a semi-auto pistol couldn't do

Put a suppressor on anything and you need to sight in and adjust for any weird play. My Taurus tx22 shot about 1in right after putting my suppressor on but was dead on when it was off. Some of my other guns like my ppks only shot about 1/2 in down/right. If he were to change ammo it would help a bit but still be off and possibly a different direction.

That wasn’t a .500 Magnum. It was a .500 Vaginitis. Seriously, just because you load a .500 magnum bullet in a .500 Magnum case, doesn’t mean you’re shooting .500 Magnum. I can make 10mm feel like .22LR by only loading 5 grains of powder instead of 13. But when my 155gr bullet is only moving at 700fps instead of 1400fps, is it really still 10mm? I would say no.

As a war historian, Firearm nerd and Gunsmith in training, there are a few revolvers that can be suppressed. Most notable being the Nagant revolver as it fixes the chamber problem by modifying the cylinder to move forward after spinning and kiss the barrel inlet and the rounds it fired designed to seal inside so that all the gass went into barrel allowing for full usage and later during WW2 adding a suppressor to it.

@@disturbedlife5691 well hello fellow war nerd. Aye they did for dealing with tunnel rats. It was a modified model 10 and model 17. They used 44 and 38 but the main difference were the piston rounds developed by AAI at the time combined with the suppressor combined with the piston round firing steel disks. So the revolvers became tiny revolver shotguns. They said it was only useful to about 20-25ft to my knowledge.

To be fair 500 magnum makes sense as subsonic. You can use a very heavy bullet and still have plenty of room for enough powder to keep it as close to the sound barrier as possible. It's the sort of round to get the maximum possible foot pounds whilst still being subsonic.

It would’ve been good to get a decibel meter to measure the difference in loudness between the two, that would’ve given the actual difference, and you could’ve quoted the difference in distance it would’ve been heard from (no wind scenario), which would’ve been an interesting thing to know. Great video as always 👍

Decibel meters that can measure gun shots are VERY expensive. Talking x,xxx-xx,xxx prices. You can’t use a standard meter because a gunshots impulse is so short and loud that the mics and electronics can’t respond fast enough and the numbers it picks up are all over the place.

👍👍Great video as always, Scott! That is a VERY impressive custom revolver setup! I'd wager Magnum Research could sell that as a BFRUP (Biggest *Finest* Revolver Ultimate Precision - or - "Beefer-Up" as a slang name) in their model lineup. I'm sure in person, the difference was even more profound than it was on video, as the camera doesn't pick up a lot of sonic detail or the true intensity of a .500Magnum round firing - especially from a ported barrel. The first-round "pop", as-always, was still evident with the suppressed gun, but, not as bad as I expected. I would have liked to have seen what kind of cylinder gap gas ejection occurred on it with a regular (supersonic) loaded round. A side-by-side noise comparison between supers in suppressed vs. non-suppressed guns would've also been interesting. I'd bet that the suppressed gun firing supers would have a very cool supersonic crack-boom, rather than a massive thumping boom like the ported Taurus, or any typical .500Mag. Keep up the great work, Scott...Always a fan of your videos!

Interesting fact: Russian nagant m1895 revolver is ready silent when you shoot it with suppressor! It’s all because of its’ construction: the revolvers’ drum moves forward and connects with the barrel when you pull the trigger, so in the moment of shot there is no more gap between drum and barrel and eventually, all energy of powder gases uses to move the bullet! Actually, the nagant m1895 revolver is one of the most powerful revolvers in same caliber and in its’ time!!! I hope we all will can see this miracle of Belgian-Russian arms industry on Scotts’ channel!!!)))
