Edit: ignore my calculations below. As @seth094978 has rightfully pointed out, the calculations I made did not equate to psi. I had mistaken ft-lbs for pounds of force. I did some further research and found that the maximum pressures of 4 bore and .416 Rigby are 36,259 psi and 47,137 psi, respectively. This does not change my conclusion that the .416 Rigby exceeds the 4 bore in terms of pressure, though my process in coming to that result was flawed. For those wondering, here's a comparison between 4-bore and .416 Rigby. A 4-bore slug is estimated to produce around 7,000 ft lbs of force. With a diameter of 1 inch, this gives it a cross-sectional area of .785 square inches, meaning it produces around 8,900 psi of pressure. A .416 Rigby, on the other hand, produces only 5,115 ft lbs of force. However, with a diameter of just .416 inches, it has a cross-sectional area just shy of .136 square inches. This gives it a whopping 37,633 psi of pressure, over 4 times the pressure of a 4-bore slug. *This* is why it punches straight through the VANT ballistic shield, cinder block and probably another mile of trees and dirt.

It's also the shape. The more narrow design means it loses far less velocity to wind resistance, and once it makes contact it doesn't transfer nearly as much energy to the target so it just rips right through. Small and fast for penetration, big and slower for destructive force

It looks that three frames later, the bullet appears on the far side even and keeps on going, disappearing from the field after another four frames, considerably slower, and possibly trailing some kind of ballistic material being carried with it, before the entire field of view just turns white with glass dust. The only thing I don't like about the 4 bore is that every round that that gets shot seems to break apart at a certain point. By the time the target is hit it looks like a shotgun spread with little pieces flying everywhere. I have to imagine that effect massively cuts down the amount of force.
@Hard_Cider Жыл бұрын
I think what you are seeing is some type of wadding breaking up after Scott shoots the 4 Bore because the 4 Bore is a black powder round not smokeless. Just my theory though.
@Gioeli7610 ай бұрын
@@Hard_Cider It's definitely a wadding because the bullet is doesnt seem shattered whenever he finds it. It's definitely not a black powder gun, given the power of the cartridge. I think It was in a Ron Spomer video on the 416 Remington, he said they would use wadding in its cases when the the case was completely filled with powder to prevent a premature rupture or something like that in tropical climates.

Like the others said, that's wagging. HOWEVER, I've been a bit disappointed about its performance and I feel like a steel or tungsten penetrator core in the center of the lead round would greatly improve its piercing ability against armor.

We definitely need to see some more of that .416 “honey badger” doing its thing to different targets at multiple different ranges, after it defeated the shield I thought for sure the following larger bore rifles would as well, the fact that not a single other larger caliber did absolutely took me by surprise, so I think a video of just that .416hb(what I will call it from now on) doing its thing is in order, I can’t imagine how your shoulder must’ve felt a couple hours after filming this one, giving it a chance to stiffen up a bit I’m betting it hated you and let you know it lol

I think the scariest thing you could do now with that 4-bore round is make a custom round with a Spitzer tip instead of the soft-nose, I think that would likely help with greater penetration power against the Vant shield.
@Phantom-bh5ru Жыл бұрын
Honestly at that point just use a 20mm rifle.
@killiandawson4674 Жыл бұрын
@Phantom-bh5ru That's just too easy though, and we need to maximize the potential of the 4-bore rifle besides. I'm tired of high caliber shoulder fired weapons using soft-nose ammunition and people treating that like it's the pinnacle of that round's performance when there's still clear room for improvement.
@Phantom-bh5ru Жыл бұрын
@@killiandawson4674 I have an idea. Make it a hollow point with a tungsten sabot right in the middle. If it hits soft target the hollow point would spread out dealing maximum damage. However if it hits armor the tungsten sabot would rip out of the middle and continue forwards.
@killerkraut9179 Жыл бұрын
Maybe a Explosive round would be cool to !
@skitidet4302 Жыл бұрын
Changing materials would probably help even more. Lead is TERRIBLE for penetration. A solid brass slug would penetrate much more, even with a round nose. However, it might hurt the barrel and I could understand not wanting to do that witch such an exotic gun. I guess he could get a sub caliber tungsten carbide penetrator and just cast some led around it to fit the bore. The most effective would probably be to make a home made APDS round by grinding on some carbide endmills and building a sabot around it, though getting the sabot right is real hard.

I'm not sure if it's legal to do this, but you could definitely fit enough explosive in a 4 bore slug to create a fairly dynamic effect on the target. Even some black powder would be quite dramatic. 😛

Screw legality, safety is the issue. Black powder might be okay. My fear would be using anything hotter than that. We all remember what happened with Scott's 50 cal and that hot round. Perhaps with a shotgun or rifle specifically designed to handle that? Dunno, I'm not a gunsmith.
@random.3665 Жыл бұрын
@@youbetterwakeup2449 his 50 exploded because it had a powder charge which created to much pressure. That has nothing to do with having an explosive projectile, unless it is made so badly that it goes off in your own gun (which is never ok, for any explosive payload) Noone is suggesting to propel the bullet itself with a primary explosive....
@random.3665 Жыл бұрын
Did you see that old inrangetv video with the ww2 explosive ammo? imagine using that stuff, but instead of the payload of a .30 caliber rifle round, you have a 4 bore..... that would be a double-boom stick.

I'm curious if the leg protection would have stopped the 7.62 round if it hadn't already stopped the other rounds. I think the .500 magnum rearranged the plates or whatever is in it, and Scott might have found a lucky hole or crack that allowed the round to go through. I could be totally wrong about that also.

I think in the case of some of the larger rounds not penetrating while the .416 did, is due to that extra surface area of the bullet dumping the energy more evenly over a larger space, while the .416 is probably right at that sweet spot of velocity/bullet weight/surface area and so it zips right through
