Kenwood TH-D74A Tri-Band HT Overview

In this video we take a look at the feature rich Tri Band Handheld by Kenwood, the TH-D74A. This is the only radio that is not an Icom radio that has DSTAR capabilities which makes it very unique. It has has several other functions that very few other radios have, even one that no other brand of radio has.

I just got mine. It's complicated. I have been scouring youtube for instructions on how to set-up D-star communications without a hotspot and into a local D-Star repeater. I've read the manual and I DON'T GET IT.

Greg, I've been around D-STAR for a long time, so allow me to try to disambiguate here. Moreover, it is worthy of notation that I do not own this radio. However, the concepts requisite in pursuance of programming any D-STAR radio are more or less the same. A D-STAR repeater like any repeater has an input and an output, and a positive or negative split +600hz, -5 MHz, whatever that has not changed. A D-STAR repeater is digital, so most have a gateway. A gateway is a digital connection to other repeaters via (in most cases) the Internet. A D-STAR repeater does not need a gateway, but most have them. Nor do you need to program a gateway if all you want to do is talk to people locally on the repeater. But if someone comes in on the gateway and you try to talk to them, they will not hear you unless you have the gateway repeater's gateway programmed on that channel as well. You get those few things programmed and are within RF range of a repeater, you will be on the air.
