All those extra two sticks do is change the range from high to low and out of direct and into direct. You're not actually moving shift forks with two of them, it’s opening or closing air solenoids. The old two-stick spicer transmissions needed two sticks because there were actually two gearboxes that you needed to shift.

For those who don't get it: A) Go to 5:19, you will see the regular 1-2-3-4 pattern shifting, thats how the 1st stick operates all the time. This should be fairly straightforward. B) @ 5:30 the 3rd stick (the range selector) has to be used. This stick ONLY moves when shifting up from 4th to 5th (L) or down from 5th (L) to 4th. C) Gears 5 to 8 are SPLIT in Lo and Hi. Going from L to H or H to L on a same gear requires using the 2nd stick (the "splitter") in addition to the 1st one. D) @5:34 you can finaly see the splitter into action . The 1st stick has to go to neutral then back into gear when splitting. Thats 5 -lo to 5- hi. E) From then on you see the 1st stick going along the standard 1-2-3-4 pattern but repeating each position twice, thus spitting lo/hi for gears 5 to 8. That's about it.

it's a 13 speed. the 'stick' on the right is replacing the range selector switch. The 'stick' on the left is replacing the splitter switch. you can see him shift all 13 speeds starting at 5:16 as follows: low, 1'st, 2'nd, 3'rd, 4'th, then selects high range (right stick), then 5'th direct, 5'th overdrive (left stick), 6'th direct, 6'th over (left stick), 7'th direct, 7'th over (left stick), 8'th direct, 8'th over (left stick). He kicks the shifter (middle stick) into neutral then back into gear when he splits 5'th to 8'th gears. I agree that it looks cool, but for me the novelty would wear of in about 15 minutes.

to be honest, I don't know how many times I've watched this video, but I probably could figure it out, it's just a 13 speed with 3 sticks. left one is the stick that splits the high gears. middle stick is the one that goes through all of the gears. and the right one is the stick that gets the transmission from the low to high gears and vice versa.
@robfromaz19778 жыл бұрын
Now that I have read your comment and watched the video again I completely agree with you. I was really impressed the first time I watched this but now not so much. @KingdaToro3 жыл бұрын
It's not as bad as it looks. The center stick with the silver shaft is the actual shifter stick, and moves in the usual pattern. The stick on the right with the skull is the low-high range switch, it goes to the right for the lower gears and left for the higher ones. The left stick is the splitter, it splits each gear into two. It goes back for the lower gear and forward for the higher one.

Not that my opinion matters but this video is cool. It raises plain old shifting in a big rig to another level. Yes. It isn't necessary. Neither are polished wheels, custom interior, or an eye-catching paint job. If trucking is in your blood, some guys find ways to dial it up a notch. That set-up is not something you see everyday in real life. I had no idea you could even do that till seeing this video. This video is a celebration of an appreciation for the mechanical wonders of big rig transmissions. Shifting gears is a smooth gentle process. Done well. It's a thing of beauty. The driver is in sync with the machine and vis versa. It's hard to see but I believe he's shifting without using the clutch. That's finesse. Lots of people drive truck. Some do it with style and finesse raising it to an art. Thanks for sharing this video.

I can tell you by the sound alone it's a 13 spd. Listen for the range switch(low/high side) hiss when he moves the left and top/upper right stick. The left would be the split and upper right is the range switch. Also pay attention to the fact when he is in the low side he never touches the left stick. It's 500 rpm between gears on the bottom side and 250 rpm across the top, cuts em in half and man will it pull then. Makes a weak truck tolerable and a big truck insane. Buuut I'm not taking away from it at all, hell of a cool layout even if it's now a bitch to get in the back. Can't take away from the man being smoother than a duck's back at the same time. Fine job hero!

I don't usually hate on trucker mods, because if you like it, go for it, who am I to tell you otherwise. But this seems like a safety issue to me, hate it and I would make the guy take it out if I ever had to license this truck. Same with the seat height, don't you dare to ever be in an accident!

+ObsessionPC do you have any idea how many gears american 18 wheelers have? Mostly 18. They have to switch between 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18 and 1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,17 if i remember correctly. These gearboxes are complicated to operate because americans cant into engineering

This multi stick gear shifting is more than I am able to comprehend! I can't understand any manufacturer making this system which then makes the driver take hands completely away from the wheel - ok, I know this is in America and things are different over there, the roads are bigger, wider and so on, but over here if it was proven that you were driving with no hands, you would receive a hefty fine and penalty points, but then again, never going to happen here. Just so interesting to see this rather complicated and, to me, unnecessary method of gear changes. I am not hating or saying anything untoward, I am just intrigued.
@skeetersaurus62498 жыл бұрын
Actually, the old Mack MaxiDyne's had this same configuration, FACTORY, and some did get to Britain. They did hit a brick wall, so to speak, with the NHTSA (U.S. National Highway and Transportation Safety Admin) and other regulatory agencies about the 'no-hands' issue to where a skilled driver actually showed how it could be done by putting their arm through the steering wheel and, by using the inside of the elbow, keep control while grabbing 'two-at-a-time'. The whole issue of that long-gone day, was low-horsepower, low-torque, and very steep (and rough) mountain roads. Keep in mind, you get a 10-percent grade on a rough road pulling a heavy load, and you BETTER have a LOT of gears to stay in your powerband. While it's a lot more for looks now with most trucks (500-horsepower sure beats 185, anyday), there's still extreme loads (over 50-tons) that can cause lots of mountain problems, especially when ice and snow chains get added to the mix (stop rolling, stop and wait for that BIG tow bill).
@matttttttk46988 жыл бұрын
Actually they had the same configuration, but it wasn't until the 13 speed became popular, because this is jsut a 13 speed with the splitter and range selector valves in the floor instead of on the main shifter.
@EezeeListen8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the most concise explanation - you have made it easier to understand as I can now relate to it, although I feel I would at least have a chance with the modern system, but zero chance with the 3 sticks :)

This modification makes your job harder. Far left stick is the splitter, Center is normal gears, Right is the high/low range. I drive an 18 speed and Ive got a modified shift stick. Under the splitter, modified switch to turn on/off cruise control and another switch for the high/low. Parallel to the splitter, Opposite side is a switch for the engine brake, on/off and another switch for high/low.
