whoever invented this multi stick system, is a pure stroke of genius. NOT for his invention, but for having been able to get a manufacturer to actually put this into their trucks. Totally insane.

All those extra two sticks do is change the range from high to low and out of direct and into direct. You're not actually moving shift forks with two of them, it’s opening or closing air solenoids. The old two-stick spicer transmissions needed two sticks because there were actually two gearboxes that you needed to shift.

@@Firebird_876 how many two stick trucks have you driven. A few are 2 shifts, a few are 3 shifts but, most are 4 shift and are either double under drive or double overdrive

For those who don't get it: A) Go to 5:19, you will see the regular 1-2-3-4 pattern shifting, thats how the 1st stick operates all the time. This should be fairly straightforward. B) @ 5:30 the 3rd stick (the range selector) has to be used. This stick ONLY moves when shifting up from 4th to 5th (L) or down from 5th (L) to 4th. C) Gears 5 to 8 are SPLIT in Lo and Hi. Going from L to H or H to L on a same gear requires using the 2nd stick (the "splitter") in addition to the 1st one. D) @5:34 you can finaly see the splitter into action . The 1st stick has to go to neutral then back into gear when splitting. Thats 5 -lo to 5- hi. E) From then on you see the 1st stick going along the standard 1-2-3-4 pattern but repeating each position twice, thus spitting lo/hi for gears 5 to 8. That's about it.

it's a 13 speed. the 'stick' on the right is replacing the range selector switch. The 'stick' on the left is replacing the splitter switch. you can see him shift all 13 speeds starting at 5:16 as follows: low, 1'st, 2'nd, 3'rd, 4'th, then selects high range (right stick), then 5'th direct, 5'th overdrive (left stick), 6'th direct, 6'th over (left stick), 7'th direct, 7'th over (left stick), 8'th direct, 8'th over (left stick). He kicks the shifter (middle stick) into neutral then back into gear when he splits 5'th to 8'th gears. I agree that it looks cool, but for me the novelty would wear of in about 15 minutes.

ALL SHOW! He has a 13 speed Road Ranger with a low/ high and /direct/ overdrive air valves. What he has done is removed the air buttons and substituted two sticks to shift the air valves. The center stick is the main transmission gear shift lever. The left stick is the direct and overdrive air valve button. The stick with the skull on top is the low/high range button. ALL SHOW. As Phoney as baloney is called beef!

to be honest, I don't know how many times I've watched this video, but I probably could figure it out, it's just a 13 speed with 3 sticks. left one is the stick that splits the high gears. middle stick is the one that goes through all of the gears. and the right one is the stick that gets the transmission from the low to high gears and vice versa.
@robfromaz1977
@robfromaz1977 8 жыл бұрын
Now that I have read your comment and watched the video again I completely agree with you. I was really impressed the first time I watched this but now not so much. I have driven 13 speeds and you make perfect sense. Seems like a lot of extra hand movement just to look good. I do love the way this truck sounds though!

@KingdaToro
@KingdaToro 3 жыл бұрын
It's not as bad as it looks. The center stick with the silver shaft is the actual shifter stick, and moves in the usual pattern. The stick on the right with the skull is the low-high range switch, it goes to the right for the lower gears and left for the higher ones. The left stick is the splitter, it splits each gear into two. It goes back for the lower gear and forward for the higher one.

Not that my opinion matters but this video is cool. It raises plain old shifting in a big rig to another level. Yes. It isn't necessary. Neither are polished wheels, custom interior, or an eye-catching paint job. If trucking is in your blood, some guys find ways to dial it up a notch. That set-up is not something you see everyday in real life. I had no idea you could even do that till seeing this video. This video is a celebration of an appreciation for the mechanical wonders of big rig transmissions. Shifting gears is a smooth gentle process. Done well. It's a thing of beauty. The driver is in sync with the machine and vis versa. It's hard to see but I believe he's shifting without using the clutch. That's finesse. Lots of people drive truck. Some do it with style and finesse raising it to an art. Thanks for sharing this video.

I grew up drivin my dad's garbage trucks, where we had 60,000 on a turned up Hendrickson, with a 5 and a 4 and a manual. rear after that one, that I would shift 21 forward gears to reach a top speed of 45MPH. I shifted from home to home on residential routes where you stop and go all day long, all summer, winter, etc.I learned on these trucks when I was 16yrs old. I love truckin', But i REMEMBER a lot more shiftin' in my days. and I have a brother "COUNTRY BOY" out of LUCK WI, Who loves these old 3 STICKER TRUCKS TO THIS DAY! . and collects them Ol' B model and KW's on a farm he calls "Tired Iron Hill"...kinda has a nice rang to it! Later guys, jus puttin in my two cents...which is what it's worth..

He's just making it look more complicated... The center one is the only actual gear shift... The right one is only a high/low range switch... The left one is the splitter switch. He's just making you think it's just that difficult... But it's not. He is actually able to move left stick to split gears before he (really) shifts with the center one. He can use one hand easily to do the same job... He's just putting on a show for the viewers by moving them at the same time is all. I should know... I've got two sticks now on mine. The high/low switch is on my (real) shifter. Same thing as him only minus the third stick. Make sense? Smoke and mirrors... Lol

I can tell you by the sound alone it's a 13 spd. Listen for the range switch(low/high side) hiss when he moves the left and top/upper right stick. The left would be the split and upper right is the range switch. Also pay attention to the fact when he is in the low side he never touches the left stick. It's 500 rpm between gears on the bottom side and 250 rpm across the top, cuts em in half and man will it pull then. Makes a weak truck tolerable and a big truck insane. Buuut I'm not taking away from it at all, hell of a cool layout even if it's now a bitch to get in the back. Can't take away from the man being smoother than a duck's back at the same time. Fine job hero!

I don't usually hate on trucker mods, because if you like it, go for it, who am I to tell you otherwise. But this seems like a safety issue to me, hate it and I would make the guy take it out if I ever had to license this truck. Same with the seat height, don't you dare to ever be in an accident!

This multi stick gear shifting is more than I am able to comprehend! I can't understand any manufacturer making this system which then makes the driver take hands completely away from the wheel - ok, I know this is in America and things are different over there, the roads are bigger, wider and so on, but over here if it was proven that you were driving with no hands, you would receive a hefty fine and penalty points, but then again, never going to happen here. Just so interesting to see this rather complicated and, to me, unnecessary method of gear changes. I am not hating or saying anything untoward, I am just intrigued.
@skeetersaurus6249

Actually, the old Mack MaxiDyne's had this same configuration, FACTORY, and some did get to Britain. They did hit a brick wall, so to speak, with the NHTSA (U.S. National Highway and Transportation Safety Admin) and other regulatory agencies about the 'no-hands' issue to where a skilled driver actually showed how it could be done by putting their arm through the steering wheel and, by using the inside of the elbow, keep control while grabbing 'two-at-a-time'. The whole issue of that long-gone day, was low-horsepower, low-torque, and very steep (and rough) mountain roads. Keep in mind, you get a 10-percent grade on a rough road pulling a heavy load, and you BETTER have a LOT of gears to stay in your powerband. While it's a lot more for looks now with most trucks (500-horsepower sure beats 185, anyday), there's still extreme loads (over 50-tons) that can cause lots of mountain problems, especially when ice and snow chains get added to the mix (stop rolling, stop and wait for that BIG tow bill).
@matttttttk4698
@matttttttk4698 8 жыл бұрын
Actually they had the same configuration, but it wasn't until the 13 speed became popular, because this is jsut a 13 speed with the splitter and range selector valves in the floor instead of on the main shifter.

Under the splitter, modified switch to turn on/off cruise control and another switch for the high/low. Parallel to the splitter, Opposite side is a switch for the engine brake, on/off and another switch for high/low. I don't really think it's complicated. Looks like a normal transmission, just with sticks instead of switches.

if you listen the extra sticks are just on air switches. Its all for looks and if it was a show truck I would say sure what the hell go for it but for actual trucking nope.

I give him credit for his "know how to" shift but a 3 stick and a 2 stick has seen their day and it's over.That 3 stick would work your ass off and you would be tired as hell at the end of the day. One stick with a HI-LO splitter is the best setup I think.Throw in a Jake Brake for steep downgrades and you got a sweet setup.

for sure man, although it looks cool I would much rather have my single and selector switches. cool for show trucks but no as safe as keeping 1 hand on the wheel.

Actually it is not over. A good friend of mine and i did drive for him still use these older trucks all in the seventies. He has Hays,Pacific,Mac, and International. This is on Vancouver Island, B.C. They are still being used to this day. Awesime trucks to drive hauling logs to the dryland sort.

You are welcome (Part time truck driver here) and country music is always welcomed while you're out on the road. But you know this ain't a standard setup right... This is a showpiece thing. Left stick is the range selector, middle is standard gear selector and the right one is the overdrive. In Europe nobody has such mods... in fact most rigs are automatic. My Scania is automatic too. But I have driven older trucks with manual transmissions and what this guy has done is simply swap the shifter switches for shifters... Very cool visual, but it would be hell to use this setup on the job.

I like it. I drove Mack's with twin sticks and several others with a 5 and a 4. Nowadays though, too many other things going on in and around the truck that require my attention and input to keep it between the white lines, and off the top of 4 wheelers that think all trucks are big slow moving machines that can stop on a dime. Besides, there is no way I could drink my beer and text on the phone with an extra stick to worry about. J/K, LMAO !

Except he's just modified a single stick into 3 sticks, all he did was replace the range selector and splitter with sticks, basically just making it harder for the hell of it.

Crazed Monk a "steering wheel holder" just drives a truck, a trucker on the other hand: know their truck. And who gives a shit on whether or not you'd prefer an auto than a modified 13? It's his truck let em do what the fuck he wants! He is the one spending 14 hours or more in the damn thing, so let him do what makes him enjoy his time in the cab more.
