Anti-government protests in Kenya are continuing after President William Ruto made a dramatic reversal Wednesday, announcing he would not sign the finance bill that sparked a nationwide uprising, and would instead send the bill back to Parliament. At least 23 people were killed and dozens more injured when police fired live rounds, rubber bullets and tear gas at protesters who stormed Kenya's Parliament building. We speak to a writer and activist based in Nairobi who asked to remain anonymous out of fear for her safety. She says many in the youth-led movement have been "abducted" during the police crackdown on demonstrations, which are now calling for Parliament to be dissolved and new elections to be held. We also hear from Mamka Anyona, a Kenyan international finance and development expert, who breaks down the financial crisis that led to the mass unrest. The contested finance bill deploys a tax hike in an attempt to repay $80 billion in foreign loans, largely from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. But critics say mismanagement and corruption have led to high inflation and unemployment, and characterize both the bill and the loans themselves as undemocratic decisions reached without constituent approval. "It has all ended up creating this tinderbox," Anyona says.

We do have lots of water, electricity, an extensive tarmac road network with the important roads being regularly maintained and upgraded, high speed internet, sewer services in many towns and cities, medical services, it is just that it is getting too expensive to enjoy all of this. As with any other country in the world, we do have people living in poverty as i believe you also have homeless and other problems like fentanyl epidemic. Any tourist who has been to kenya can attest to how nice it is here. Nonetheless, I am very worried because the coming days are quite uncertain but I'm sure we'll survive this and not descend into civil war.

The price of fuel has also significantly gone down. Do you know that? God bless you and give you wisdom.

@@ThibautDjemo some countries used or are using the loan to built infrastructure such as railway and roads - in the case of Nairobi to Mombasa, however the economic growth of many African countries is very low as well as per capital income, thereby making it very difficult for Africa to pay off such loans. I think what we should have asked ourselves as leaders and policy makers is: are these projects very necessary, and if so how can the loan be repaid such that it will not become burdensome to the people. Interestingly, Kenya compared to other sub Sharan countries are doing better as regards the use of loans. Again, it's high time for Africa to develop their own industries since we have most of the natural resources, so that we don't need to depend much on borrowing.

Kenya should develop one of many alternative energy sources. Troy Reed's GEET Fuel Processor. This could be used in mass for irrigation and generators. Dennis Lee's panel system uses a subzero gas that collects heat and compresses it to turn water into steam that runs a steam engine in a closed loop. Enough energy in just one panel to power a house, a very big house and have energy left over. These are two very good systems for that hot climate. Growing food, feeding animals running equipment are all things that would make Kenya stable. Help grow exports while eliminating a lot of the energy cost. Let people work and prosper, that's all they want. Kenya, I love you but you have to become innovative. Play by your own rules.

Mamka Anyona sounds like great!! thank you for your eloquence and truthfulness. If Ruto is not ejected from leadership, he will be more dangerous and more sneaky. We will be back to Moi era problems. Ruto calls for talks and then turn around and unleash the military, The massacre in Githurai should server as an example. The revolution must go full hog or else you will entrench a hydra. RUTO JUST HAS TO GO PERIOD.

That girl she is in my country as what... ?👂 What is happening in Kenya is what will happened in Zambia as soon as possible if the president will not hear from his governance or the people or Zambia. We love Mr president in Zambia but what he always says doesn't come to pass. I believe that one time T B JOSHUA said that, "they will be a revolution between YOUTHs and government. Youth won't have job and they will cry and they won't be heard by the government who are in power coz they don't want to retire so that they can replace the youth on power. The government won't allow the youth to take power and the youth will fight for peace and power. This is what is happening in Kenya.

Kenya's situation now is typical of WHEN DEMOCRACY BENEFITS ONLY THE ELECTED BUT LEAVES THE MASSES IMPOVERISHED. DEMOCRACY CAN ONLY SURVIVE WHEN CONSTITUTIONS ARE OFTEN REVIEWED TO ENSURE THAT THE ELECTED DOES GET THE CHANCE TO DISADVANTAGE ANYONE. THERE SHOULD BE EQUITY AND EQUALITY.

Let us face it. The huge debt hanging over Kenya is primarily due to politicians and corruption/incompetence!! What is needed is tackling corruption/ incompetence as matter of urgency!!! It is like carrying water with a heavily leaking bucket!!! You end up with an empty container the longer you travel!! IMF/ CHINA etc...if managed by competent politicians one coukd hope to see the lught at the end if the tunnel...!!!

It's important to understand that the finance bill that triggered protests by million of opposition parties leaders supporters was unpopular to many Kenyans. However, the protesters, of whom the overwhelming majority are supporters of the opposition parties in Kenya (who lost in the last general election of August 2022 in Kenya), aren't protesting to stop the finance bill and collection of government taxes associated with it. No, no please. The protesters took advantage of the unpopular finance bill after their opposition members of parliament who opposed the bill were defeated in parliament. After the finance bill was passed by majority members of parliament, the opposition parties leaders mobilized their army of supporters to protest against the bill in the streets. The leaders of the opposition parties, (.rumored to be supported by some foreign powers) adopted the mob justice protests technique of mobilizing huge crowds of people to overwhelm the police and the peace loving citizens used by the pro-hamas and pro-palestinians protesters in the streets of London UK, New York, USA and other cities of democratic nations of the world. Claiming that they were ready to die and the police cannot shoot down all of them, they Stormed the state house, in the way pro-palestinians Islamic extremists protesters storm private property and businesses in UK and other democratic nations. These protesters overwhelmed the police by their number, took over the parliament, Sat in speaker chair and started burning and destroying parliament building chairs and posting their criminal activities in their KZbin channels. When the police ordered them to leave the parliament building, they refused and became very murderously violent against the police and to protect themselves and our parliament the police fired and some, sadly to say, were critically wouded while others died. The militants illegal and undemocratic take over or our parliament building is not legal democratic right to peaceful protests. They didn't take over the parliament building by peaceful means but overwhelmed the police and by force took over the parliament building. Even after our president Dr William Ruto, in respect to their democratic rights to free speech agreed to drop the finance bill, the Kenyan adults and youth strongly affiliated to the opposition parties now insist that they will continue protesting until president Dr Ruto resigns. Protestors in Nairobi are openly campaigning for support to gather together enough number to take over the state house and overthrow our government. Taking over the state house and removing our democratically elected president amounts to the grievous crime of treason and coup d'etat. Many Kenyans have started to wonder whether the leaders of the opposition parties and their supporters are being moved by a foreign hand to remove our democratically elected president from office for some reason unknown to protesting Kenyans. Rumours tell us that some foreigm government seduced Ignorant Libyans citizens and incited them to overthrow thier government and kill their own president and i wonder whether we're facing the Libyan situation in Kenya. I pray God to wake up Kenyans to resist such undemocratic ways of solving national challenges.

Corruption in Kenya, Nigeria and SOME other parts of Africa is serious issue. Corrupt leaders love borrowing loans from IMF and world bank, they retire very rich,, And always stick the bill to poor citizens 🤔 A Mp in Kenya and many parts in Africa earn TOTAL close to $40,000 a month 🤔 i don't think they deserve this amount, and i don't think mp in America and UK earns this amount of salaries 🤔 Botswana NEVER took IMF/world bank loans but they've better governance and better quality of life than Kenya and Nigeria...
