We all knew that the majority of entrants to the race, had trained specifically over a period of several years, for this one race. Only Kipchoge, had the strength and stamina to run hard in such horrid conditions, not because of his superior training, but because of his overall conditioning and fitness level. It was an honour to watch the race on tv, and ive never seen a runner cope so well, when other world class athletes, fell to pieces.
@Tony-1454

@@peterlewis3540 it’s not even any of those things you mentioned, some people just have a natural gift and are just superior to others, in certain things. It also has to do a lot with mental fitness, some people are just better at handling extreme pressure and horrible conditions

That surge at 30k was something to behold watching it live,, one minute five guys are latching on to his back and five minutes later he's disappeared up the road so effortlessly, I mean you couldn't even see the increase in pace bcoz his running technique never changed.. He made the rest look like they had stood still 😂.. Qiute spectacular,, I've heard about his acceleration late in races, but to see it unfold live and how he dropped the entire field with that acceleration in the punishing heat of sapporo.. It was spectacular,, he's truly one of the all time greats of marathon

I live in Sapporo. The weather was cruel on the race day (July 8), 35+ Celsius degree and 80%+ humidity, the next day however was dramatically better, 22 Celsius degree (during the same time period) and slight rainy weather with comfortable breeze. In fact the weather had been like that over two weeks, which is very abnormal for Sapporo, yet the very next day after Olympics was over, the summer in Sapporo ended. If only the race was one day later, or the more pleasant weather was one day earlier, so many athletes could have achieved much better score instead of quitting the race.
