More than one hundred thousand refugees are reported to have crossed over into Kenya from Somalia, from late last year. They are currently hosted in several camps at the Dadaab complex. The high number of refugees still streaming into the country is mainly as a result of drought and famine owing to climate change. So huge is the increase in number that the Kenyan government bowed to pressure from the UNHCR to re-open IFO two camp which had been closed in 2016. Relocation of older and new arrivals into ifo two camp started late last month and will go on until at least 60,000 refugees are moved at the end of phase one. Humanitarian organisations on the other hand are grappling with the huge numbers and how to provide critical services for their wellbeing. In the first feature of our Dadaab diaries series, Nimrod Taabu who was at the refugee camp in Garissa county brings out the story of the influx of the refugees and the relocation exercise that is ongoing.
