Mais eux l'ont vaincu par le sang de l'Agneau et par la parole dont ils ont témoigné, car ils ont méprisé leur vie jusqu'à mourir. Soyez donc dans la joie, vous, les cieux et leurs habitants. Malheur à vous, la terre et la mer, car le Diable est descendu chez vous, frémissant de colère et sachant que ses jours sont comptés. "Se voyant rejeté sur la terre, le Dragon se lança à la poursuite de la Femme, la mère de l'enfant mâle. Mais elle reçut les deux ailes du grand aigle pour voler au désert jusqu'au refuge où, loin du Serpent, elle doit être nourrie un temps et des temps et la moitié d'un temps » (Ap 12, 7-14). Alors il leur fit découvrir comment l’homme et la femme seraient le chef de Dieu parce qu’associés au mystère de la fécondité qui est en Dieu. Ce moment fut une épreuve pour les anges : ils durent donner leur assentiment à servir le plan de Dieu, en se mettant aux services des hommes alors qu’ils ne comprenaient pas pourquoi Dieu faisait ainsi, et pourquoi ce n’était pas eux, les aînés, qui seraient les plus aimés. Cette révolte de l’ange est celle de l’orgueil, et on la retrouve à tous les temps : dès que l’on se trouve devant quelque chose qui vient de Dieu et que nous ne comprenons pas - car cela est liée à sa miséricorde -, alors on se révolte. Le péché de l'énorme Dragon, de l'antique Serpent, du Diable ou du Satan, comme l'appelle l’apocalypse est de séduire le monde entier. Cette séduction est celle de l’intelligence qui n’aime plus, qui ne veut plus être relative à un autre, qui mesure tout, qui pervertit l’intelligence en la ramenant à la raison. L’archange Michel, qui mène le combat angélique et dont le nom signifie « Qui est comme Dieu », nous rappelle la sainteté de Dieu, sa grandeur, la profondeur de son amour et que lui seul peut illuminer les hommes en leur communiquant sa Lumière de gloire. Les bons anges ne cessent de rappeller aux hommes que c’est en adorant Dieu de tout son coeur, de toute son âme et de toute son intelligence que ce dernier pourra nous conduire. La grâce de Dieu asume en nous l’homme qui adore. L’orgueilleux est rejeté, les mains vides. Dans la symbolique de l’Apocalypse, la terre désigne ici le monde sans Dieu : « Malheureux ! vous, les hommes de la terre » c'est-à-dire ceux qui n’adorent plus Dieu. Dieu n’est pas cause du mal, mais celui-ci est entré dans le monde par l’orgueil des mauvais anges, et il demeure par celui des hommes et ne cesse de mener le monde à travers des idéologies mensongères et meurtrières. Le catéchisme de l’Eglise universelle nous enseigne que : La puissance de Satan n'est cependant pas infinie. Il n'est qu'une créature, puissante du fait qu'il est pur esprit, mais toujours une créature : il ne peut empêcher l'édification du Règne de Dieu. Quoique Satan agisse dans le monde par haine contre Dieu et son Royaume en Jésus-Christ, et quoique son action cause de graves dommages - de nature spirituelle et indirectement même de nature physique - pour chaque homme et pour la société, cette action est permise par la divine Providence qui avec force et douceur dirige l'histoire de l'homme et du monde. La permission divine de l'activité diabolique est un grand mystère mais "nous savons que Dieu fait tout concourir au bien de ceux qui l'aiment (Rm 8,28)" (n° 395). C’est pourquoi la tradition chrétienne a toujours représenté l’Archange Michel combattant au côtés de la Vierge Marie pour le salut des âmes
