Great effort! Keralites would definitely use coconut oil. Also they would cut the fish into smaller pieces. In Bengal where I come from the fish would be rubbed with salt and turmeric and lightly fried and then removed from the pan to make the curry and would be put back again into the curry and boiled for a few minutes.

Most local fisheries stock butterfish , but even Hake can be used 🥂
