On the “local tradition at Varkala” : that’s called bali tharpanam. There is Bhagvan Janardhana (Vishnu) temple above the cliff . when people die, their relatives offer bali at the beach so that the soul reaches bhagvan’s feet and attain moksha . The beach is also papanasanam beach , which means you can purify the sins of our ancestors too through bali tharpanam at the beach . On the the kerala calendar month of karkadaka amavasi night , you can witness lakhs of workshippers offers Bali at this beach
